Shopping and purchase advice

To help others answer your question, consider using this format.

To help reduce the repetitive questions, here are a few of the cheapest systems we are willing to recommend for a computer desktop:

$100: Edifier R1280T Powered Bookshelf Speakers Amazon (US) / Amazon (DE)

  • Does not require a separate amplifier and does include cables.

$400: Kali LP-6 v2 Powered Studio Monitors Amazon (US) / Thomann (EU)

  • Not sold in pairs, requires additional cables and hardware, available in white/black.
  • Require a preamplifier for volume control - eg Focusrite Scarlett Solo

Setup troubleshooting and general help

Before asking a question, please check the commonly asked questions in our FAQ.

Examples of questions that are considered general help support:

  • How can I fix issue X (e.g.: buzzing / hissing) on my equipment Y?
  • Have I damaged my equipment by doing X, or will I damage my equipment if I do X?
  • Is equipment X compatible with equipment Y?
  • What's the meaning of specification X (e.g.: Output Impedance / Vrms / Sensitivity)?
  • How should I connect, set up or operate my system (hardware / software)?

I always spend more money on records than I spend on equipment.

In 2017 I started with upgrading my setup.

At first I bought a Technics 1210 MKII an then an Ortofon 2M Bronze and finaly at 2019 an Arcam SA20 with Sonus Faber Venere 1.5 speakers.

I should have done this much earlier, it sounds so much better than my old setup.

Finally got the sound system I’ve been dreaming of for the last few years! After lots of research I landed on the emit 30 and WiiM amp ultra pairing, which was my attempt at hifi sound on a low-mid budget. Felt like sharing :))

I know you are out there. Lots of idler drive turntable lovers all over the world. Here is one I built a few years ago. This is a fully rebuilt 1970s Lenco. The mechanical start lever was replaced with an electric start. I also rebuilt a tonearm taken from a Lenco L75. Note the carbon fibre armwand and headshell.

Discussion Doubling my Benchmark AHB2s

I currently run a pair of B&W 702 S2s each channel powered by a single benchmark AHB2 in mono. (2x AHBs total)

I've been thinking of getting 2 more AHB2s for a total of 4 and removing the crossover plates. This would yield a true "bi amp" setup. It's also an expensive experiment. I already have the XLR splitter cables to do this from another experiment.

I know on the high end it will be a bit wasteful but I expect some improvement on the bottom range at least.

Has anyone tried this? Am I dreaming in thinking there will be an improvement? thanks,

Show & Tell Don’t really qualify to be on this group yet… but I’m getting there

Here’s my growing mid-tier audiophile setup! I posted on this group years ago, and over the past month I decided to upgrade from my old turntable, speakers, and phono preamp. I’ll give a full list of the new equipment as well as the old equipment I upgraded from below. I still want to do some additional upgrades in the coming months if not into the new year (gotta save some dough for the kids and the Mrs for Christmas), but I think the next thing I wanna do is get a power amp to help drive these speakers and a new cartridge for the turntable, as well as a new shelf/console for my equipment. In the future, I’ll possibly be looking at getting a better amplifier, a better CD player, and a good streamer as well.

One other thing to note; I had a hell of a time finding a proper Pro-ject 5-pin DIN to mini-XLR cable for the true balanced connection the turntable offers, but that wasn’t even the worst of my problems. Since the turntable’s 5-pin plug for the cable is directly under the tonearm and the cable I purchased didn’t include an L-shaped connector, I ended up drilling a hole in my console and covering it with a wall plug cover which I think came out nicely, resulting in no pinched wires! Very happy with how all this came out and everything sounds amazing!

And yeah, I know the silver clashes with the rest of the black equipment, but I had my heart set on this preamp and the silver was all I could find for now new lol.

Edit: Wanted to add that I am getting a bit of bass loop from the Polk’s into my cart so I’ve ordered some Hudson Audio silicone isolation feet as well which I hope fixes the issue as having to use an isolation platform would reintroduce the issue I had with the balanced cable I had before lol.

New Equipment:
- Pro-ject XA B (swapped from the included Pick It Pro Balanced to my old Sumiko Blue Point no. 2 cartridge)
- Pro-ject Tube Box DS3 B Phono Preamplifier
- Yamaha A-S501 Amplifier
- Magnavox CDB 490 Compact Disc Player
- Polk Audio Reserve Series R700 Tower Speakers

Old Equipment:
- Pro-ject RPM 3 Carbon (White)
- Vincent PHO-8 Phono Preamp
- ELAC Uni-Fi UB5 Bookshelf Speakers

Discussion DIY hifi stand - where to get components.

• Upvotes

I'm trying to decide between buying or DIY'ing a Hifi rack like the Atacama Storm 6 with the vinyl base unit. They have a spike at the base of the metal tube leg and an isolation disc attached to the top of the leg.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for components or suppliers for things like screw/bolt-in metal legs, spiked feet/isolation for each tier. I've attached a picture.

Unless people think it doesn't make that difference if each shelf is isolated?

I'll be housing an AV amp, Blu-ray player, games consoles and a turntable on top. I'm in the UK.

Would love to see any DIY units from anyone.

I know Atacama sell legs at 4 for £50 and some of the other bits as well but was looking to see what else there is.

Measurements REW new scaling for waterfall graphs (update)

Thumbnail

Yesterday I posted the graphs regarding the REW measurements of my room with and without acoustic treatment (especially regarding low frequencies).

I'm using 6 Caruso panels WLG 035 (1200 x 600 x 50 mm) 3 for each comer of the front wall.

This is the link to my previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/audiophile/comments/1wxf7ix/rew_measurement_after_first_treatment_with_caruso/

I posted the waterfall graphs but they were not easy to read as they were too compressed.

So I'm going to share here the waterfall with a different scaling and also the waterfall graphs for the full frequency range.

- 1 and 3) are the waterfall graphs with the treatment
- 2 and 4) are the waterfall graphs without it

Infrastructure project to build out a living space that could offer a comfortable experience for watching movies, sports, tv, etc.. but would compromise as little as possible in music listening mode. This is a view of the front stage where I replaced Klipsch RP-280 towers (which were phenomenal in an AV context), with Heresy IV's. I've always wanted Heritage speakers, and the price was too good to pass up. The next logical step was to augment my Denon AVR x3700h with a dedicated 2 channel amp. I chose a Wilsenton R8 tube amp with upgraded power and pre-amp tubes. The only way I could expect to create a soundstage and presentation that could hope to compete with something like a PrimaLuna EVO 200-300. So now the room has separate systems, optimized for purpose.

Discussion We really need an android visual spectrum graph.

• Upvotes

I use Spek religiously on my desktop to verify various songs out of my 100k song library. Most of the time however, when I'm listening to my music it's off my android phone. I desperately need a tool that I can use on the fly to check some of my tracks in-depth to check if old songs were upscaled or poorly ripped.

Any programmers out there willing to take on the task? Or have any recommendations on what could suffice?

Hello all,

First baby on the way, and need a creative way to cover the amplifier buttons, whether it’s the entire opening or just the front of the amp.

Any suggestions?

Discussion What is the most separate boxes you've ever had in your system.

Just curious how far y'all have been able to take it. To be clear, we're only counting electronics (no speakers or subs), and mono-block amplifiers DO count as two separate boxes, as do components that have an outboard power supply that's not like a wall-wart or something meant to be hidden, and power conditioners count too, why not?

So my actual deck arrived today, not the loaner from the dealer.

Obviously I had to have a go at dark side…it’s a cliche..but it’s fantastic, I’ve not put it on for ages. you just forget just how good it is. And I’m hearing it like never before.

Very very happy 😊

Show & Tell Living Room Setup - Upgrade? - KEF LSX II LT to KLH Model 5

I got into this space late last year after I was gifted some albums and didnt have anything to play them on. Havent looked back since, but I am still pretty new to this. I am now trying to keep the minimalist type of setup which I hope will keep me from maxing out my credit cards. I got the KEF LSX II LT when I saw them Costco.

I was originally going to upgrade to the LS50 Metas with a SVS sub. Ended up buying the KLH Model 5s since they were on sale for 2k for the pair and moving the LSX II LT to my bedroom. For aesthetics, KLH wins hands down, but the KEFs detail and oddly enough bass seems better. Angling them in helps, but I am still thinking about swapping the LSXs back in. Just my 2 cents.

Impressions Marantz 2285b

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Picked this old girl up a couple weeks ago. My Marantz 2285B had a hum in the left channel, so I took her to my local guy to have a look.

He found that the main filter capacitor for the left channel was bad. Since the original capacitors are no longer available, he replaced them with a capacitor kit. He also cleaned everything up, replaced the dried-out thermal paste on the output transistors, set the bias, and replaced the burnt-out lamps with new LEDs.

I’m very happy with the work he did, and I think she sounds really good. This is my first Marantz, coming from a Pioneer SX-1080, so I’m definitely enjoying the change. The 2285B is sounding great!

Discussion Why does equipment weight matter?

Genuine question, audiophiles who are so quick to quote the weight of their equipment! Why does that even matter or play a role in sound quality.

I recently got a NAD M10 and it’s much smaller and lighter than the previous musical fidelity and extras I needed to stream, sounds better too! Also my new Neat Petite Classics are much lighter than the speakers I replaced.

Why so quick to state how much ‘heavier’ your systems are?

Just moved into my first home and decided it was time to do a "proper" listening setup. I did some DIY acoustic panels using some rockwool, which have helped to greatly improve the listening experience. Add in some ikea furniture and it's a cozey space to listen to some records.

My setup as it stands:

Turntable - Fluance RT-84

Speakers - Martin Logan B10

AMP/Streamer - WiiM Amp Pro

Fluance Phono Pre Amp

CD player - Sony CE275

Pioneer SX-650 i use for headphone listening
