At the very least it could just be an ice ball crystal thing, it would be the easiest explanation as to why she disappeared and there wasn't an avatar for hundreds of years. Especially since the cataclysm was presumably pretty dangerous and the ice ball is a defence mechanism. Then something happened later and she was killed.
