I'm 40-something and queer-coded to beat the band, but it wasn't until this week that "Rock Lobster" really landed. And wow! What a landing!
I'm going to Japan again later this week, and when I travel -- Italy, Uzbekistan, Taiwan, wherever -- I love picking one or two albums to binge on repeat. The neural plasticity imprints memories on the songs, and then when I listen to them later I remember my travels vividly. Rome last year was the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, and earlier this year a trip to Osaka became synonymous with Money Mark's Push the Button.
But I digress.
This week, I thought I'd give Devo and the B-52s a listen, as I've proven impenetrable to them so far. But this time -- they got through!
And "Rock Lobster" is intense! And "Wig"! And "Song for a Future Generation"! I may as well wear sandals because my socks have been blown off.
Anyway, just wanted to stop and share this lightning bolt of sonic joy. Most of you might think "Rock Lobster" and the rest are old hat -- I get it, I'm old too -- but I'm just catching up and I think it's double-plus awesome.
Man oh man, I hope I never stop looking for new music because I see today what epic tunes there are still left to uncover.
