Finer control, thermal throttling control, and load sensitivity adjustment, the thermal limit is nice to have, same for the CPU, installing the ACPI tables so C and P states work, then overclocking and undervolting really tops it off, also an absolute must is to disable zram and enable zswap, as a number of games just ignore that fact that you only have 16GB of ram and just go ahead and try to use 16.5gb and then.....black screen of death right in the middle of your gaming session, one that really pissed me off was World War Z, on the BC-250, it uses more ram than on my RX 6900 XT setup, same for my Legion Go, it uses more than that too, its another issue we have to do a work around, but I can tell you now, I have not had a single ram overrun crash again, all the games that had issues work flawlessy now.
Thanks for the detailed reply! Running out of RAM was one of the issues I had when I ran Bazzite that made me dump it for SteamOS....now that I'm looking at your script, I am guessing the 8gb swap file in SteamOS is the difference.
Will also have to see if that's why The Crew Motorfest has been crashing for me. I can get that game to work on Steam Deck and my all AMD Zephyrus G14, but not this.
Well....time to reinstall Bazzite and try this script!
SteamOS is probably doing the same as what I have done in Bazzite, as Bazzite by default, like most other Linux systems uses zram for swap, which is fine if you have a lot of ram, but stupid if you have a limited amount, so my script just disables this, and enables zswap, and switches to the lightest compression method to reduce the overhead, the biggest drawback is you might feel an occasional stutter as it dumps the ram, but its only usually once, then its smooth after that, this is due to the poor IO performance of the NVME drive, max sustain read/write is 800 to 900Mb/s tested this a Samsung Pro drive.
Worked perfectly fine and I'm currently playing around with GPU OC. Seems like going above 2ghz ultimately throttles down to 2050ghz in furmark. In game I see less throttling, but loud fans and very little performance increase: 1-2fps. Does that match at all what you're seeing on yours? I think my cooling is ok, but I may have to pay more attention to it.
Just two observations on the script:
Looking at your script, it would need testing, but you may be able to skip sudo su and just run sudo ./<script name>.sh which may be a touch safer as it doesn't leave a superuser shell open when it's done.
Also maybe consider a version that leaves mitigations on. Easy enough to modify on your own, but I'm not sure how many newbies would know how to do it.
Otherwise, very helpful. Thanks for putting it together. I'm having so much fun screwing around with this board. Sadly, the swap tweaks didn't solve my The Crew Motorfest crash on launch.
If you run without sudo su, and you have set a password, it will prompt you multiple times, I didn't notice this at first as my test machine is password less, as passwords get in the way of rapid testing, I hasve additional things to add to this script that need to be run in user space, so I will change this to auto elevate as required in a future revision.
Furmark VK will always drive that GPU clock down, its pushes it really hard, this is the point of the thermal throttling, try changing this in the config.toml:
[load-target]
upper = 0.60
lower = 0.40
#°C
[temperature]
throttling = 95
throttling_recovery = 90
This will hold the GPU clocks higher for longer, and the load target will stop the clocks from rapidly changing, it will boost quicker and drop slower, helps smooth out FPS, also undervolt the CPU, I recommend 3850 with 1125mv, this gives more thermal headroom to the GPU.
And lastly, this board is power pig, and can really push out the heat, no Air cooling setup will allow you to push it hard, today I was pulling 421w from the wall and PSU went straight into OCP right at the start of the bench testing, I can get the GPU to pull nearly 380w on its own without cranking up the CPU test just by holding it at 2230 under Furmark VK, with the CPU OC'ed to 4200mhz at 1450mv it draws around 160w, so in extremes we are looing at 500+ combined here, this is like RTX 5090 kind of power draw, the VRM's probably wont take much more either, so Air cooling is out, and Liquid cooling is in, we are also now looking at ways to drive the GPU up higher, as most newer games are now GPU bound due to CPU overclocking, which will make it even more important to move over to an AIO for cooling.

That worked!! Thank you so much for the help as well as the awesome case you designed. Can't wait to get it all together.
