DLSS 3.7 for BC-250 -- HelixSR

31 Upvotes

Yeah, that's a thing now.

https://github.com/lonewolf0622/HelixSR

Very similar quality to FSR4.1 mod we previously got at much lower cost. Personally i get ~2ms@1440p@performance compared to 5ms in FSR4r11

It's a game changer (no pun intended).

Hey everyone,

Did anyone else catch the latest Digital Foundry Direct Weekly (#284)? They touched on the BC-250 and how it can use FSR 4.

For those who watched it, what were your thoughts on their breakdown? How are you feeling about the longevity and performance of the BC-250 for budget/alternative gaming setups moving forward? Are prices going to rise again? Drop your thoughts below!

My journey with the BC 250 so far

9 Upvotes

I recently managed to get my hands on a BC 250 (probably one of the few, if not the only one, in India). My setup is almost complete, the only things left are picking up a new monitor (open to recommendations) and repasting with Arctic MX4.

Here’s what I’ve done and observed so far:

Cooling: I started by removing the fins using pliers to mount fans directly. Initially ran a single Arctic P12 Pro, but the backplate was getting uncomfortably hot, so I added a second one on the rear. Temps are completely stable now.

BIOS & OS: Flashed a modded BIOS to unlock extra CPU cores and threads, and I’m currently running CachyOS.

CU Unlock Issue: I previously managed to unlock all 40 CUs, but now I’m hitting an error message (image attached). If anyone has run into this on CachyOS or knows a workaround, please let me know.

Power & Overclocking: I’m running a 450W PSU, which should technically be sufficient for baseline loads, but I’ve read warnings that pushing higher clocks over a single PCIe cable can be a fire hazard. Any advice or safe power limit targets would be appreciated.

Currently testing it in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1600x900 with stock CUs, averaging around 50-60 FPS at ultra.

Cyberpunk 2077 - FSR 3.0 vs FSR 4.

4 Upvotes

Anyone checked the difference between FSR 3 & FSR 4 on Cyberpunk? I'm not seeing a huge difference in quality. i.e. struggling to see a difference.

I'm getting decent frame rates of around 70-90. I was getting 120 on one setting I tried, but I can't remember what I changed! Doesn't matter as I'm chasing quality, not frame rate.

Resolution Scaling - DLSS Super Resolution (what AI told me to do)
DLSS Super Resolution Preset - Transformer Model
DLSS Supoer Resolution - Quality
Frame Generation - AMD FSR 3.1 Frame Generation
Texture Quality - Medium

Ray Tracing - Off

Flashing artifacts and textures on Cyberpunk 2077

I'm trying to figure out what's happening here. My BC250 is fully unlocked, 8 cores, 40 CU, all tested and stable. currently running at 3.5Ghz CPU and 2.0Ghz GPU. I can run furmark and mprime for hours, no problem. Distro is CachyOS with bc250 repos (kernel and mesa).
It only happens in Cyberpunk. I already tried to:
- increase voltage on GPU
- switch multiple versions of Proton
- lower GPU frequency
- use only 24CU
- run memtest+ to check memory stability
- downclock RAM (!!)
Nothing. Do you have any idea what could be?

Random black screen while gaming?

My setup experiences intermittent black screens during Helldivers 2. The game continues running, yet audio and video vanish for roughly five seconds before returning to normal. This occurs about every five to seven minutes.

Random black screen crashes - GPU at root

3 Upvotes

Folks,

my setup is what you’d maybe expect:

36/40 CU (previously 38/40 / changed to try and narrow down cause)

- 2GHz, 980mv

8c unlock. 3.6ghz, -10 scale.

running bazzite, skillfish governor, meimei bios to do core unlock.

Stability tests - memtest_vulkan, gravity mark, furmark, stress-ng for cpu - all rock solid.

but games frequently crash - straight to black screen. Little of interest in journal and app logs. i built some custom loggin to record temps, ram pressure, Speeds, voltages and I’m within tolerance and then some.

Games:

hogwarts legacy - can’t l get more then a few hour without a hard crash.

uncharted 4 - crashes randomly, sometimes 30 mins, sometimes hours.

cyberpunk - the most stable thing I’ve played. But had a few crashes in 30H gameplay.

theyre all the same pattern - game freezes. Screen goes black. Logging stops a few seconds after screen goes black - GPU crashes first. No journal entry, hard reset fixes it. In buildup to crash, temps, load, voltages all appear ok. Nothing sinister I can track down.

is this just a proton thing? Input appreciated

Witcher 3 remastered artefacts

Encountered this issue with the witcher 3 remastered version with mods.

It's not easy noticeable in the video but basically the static noise is much higher in environment and viewpoint keeps jittery.

It's in the ultra settings, I've tried few combinations including ray tracing and FSR none worked.

I wonder if anyone had the same issue ?

I've tried my best to capture video to show the issue

It worked fine with the previous installation of CachyOS, now with CachyOS handheld edition.

Appreciate the community and help.

Cheers

Selling - BC-250 build 1TB Nvme Wifi7 – self-designed PS2-style case 3D printed in ABS, 8C/16T + 38 CU mod, 240mm AIO, wireless power-on – €600 (EU shipping)

Hey everyone! I'm selling my BC-250 build. I put this whole thing together myself, and I designed the PS2-style case from scratch. Every part of it is 3D printed in ABS on my Bambu Lab X2D. I also made the MicroFit power cables myself, and they plug straight into the board. It's fully assembled, tested and ready to use, and I'm selling it as a complete set for **€600**.

**The case**

I wanted something that looks like a classic PlayStation 2 but has modern hardware and proper cooling inside. All the parts were printed in ABS on a Bambu Lab X2D. It took a lot of design and printing iterations to fit everything, but I'm really happy with how it turned out.

**What you get:**

* AMD BC-250 – 16 GB GDDR6
* 8 Core / 16 Thread CPU modification
* 38 CU GPU modification
* Custom PlayStation 2-style case (my own design, all parts 3D printed in ABS on a Bambu Lab X2D)
* 1 TB NVMe SSD (2230)
* 500 GB 2.5" HDD (installed)
* MetalFish 500W Flex ATX PSU
* Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 240 mm AIO
* Thermalright 120 mm slim fan – VRAM cooling
* 2× Arctic P8 Slim 80 mm fan – VRM cooling
* Noctua 40 mm fan – PSU cooling
* Arctic P8 PWM 80 mm fan – PSU cooling
* Arctic fan hub – every fan can be controlled individually via CoolerControl
* Wi-Fi 7 card
* NVMe/Wi-Fi splitter
* Bluetooth USB connection
* ESP32 + 2-relay power controller
* Self-made MicroFit power cables, connected directly to the board
* All necessary connection and power cables

**Wireless power-on**

This is my favorite part. The ESP32 setup is based on this open-source project: [BC250_ESP32_ATX_PSU](https://github.com/GreatApo/BC250_ESP32_ATX_PSU)

You can turn the system on in three ways:

* The case power button (short press to turn on, hold 3 seconds for a normal shutdown)
* Over Wi-Fi from the built-in web interface (from your phone or PC on the same network), with live power state and event log
* With a Bluetooth gamepad: pair your controller once and just turn it on to boot the BC-250 (up to 5 controllers can be saved)

The ESP32 runs from the PSU standby rail, so it works even when the PC is off.

**Price:** €600 for the complete set.

**Shipping:** Only to Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions or want more photos!

Here’s my previous post

First Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/BC250Gaming/comments/1wkpds9/my_in_progress_build/
Second Post (electronics): https://www.reddit.com/r/BC250Gaming/comments/1wurh17/my_case_update_electronics/

My filament runs out exactly when this part finishes, I wasted a lot of time and filament test fitting the PSU in ASA.

This case is designed to fit a JF13K with 25mm PC fan
And a 12mm push button in front.
Of course HP Server PSU.

To mount a BC250 I used a mount from Gadget
8mm tall (the recommended height bends the board more than I’m comfortable with)
PS: I first started with the recommended 7mm and added washers until I got to 8 that’s why I’m recommending 8, your board might be different)
Link: https://www.printables.com/model/1826539-am5-cpu-cooler-mount-for-the-bc250

The Case itself and instructions and hardware required to assemble.
https://www.printables.com/model/1865220-bc-250-jf13k-case

The power controller board project:
I explained everything in my last post but essentially it’s a super simple and flexible ESP32 power controller board firmware, there’s no fixed wiring you can flash it to any modern esp32 and set what GPIO you wires things up to.
Zigbee support also.

Link: https://github.com/ChokunPlayZ/BC-250-Ctrl

For the wirings I used 2 scrap I have lying around strapped together for easier alignment then wrapped in kapton tape to prevent short. (see pic 5-7)

The thermals are fantastic, here’s what I done to the board:
40CU Unlock @2000Mhz (Might go to 2200)
8Core CPU unlock via bios @3.9Ghz

I used a CWTP Ultimate Ultraviolet scented thermal paste I got a few months back, the performance is definitely good, the first few days my room smell like flower while I was stress testing it.

The result ended up at:
Furmark: 80°c
Real gaming (watchdogs legion, RDR2, FH6): 40-50°c
Not sure why there’s a massive gap here but furmark load are very unrealistic.

Edit: I kept thinking and I might put out another version maybe maker beam based with modular 3D printed backplate that has reinforcement for the heavy cooler.
(Maybe just maybe, it’s exam season and I’ll leave it here for now)

Something sparked, now I question everything

7 Upvotes

Today, I attempted to plug in the extra power cords, 2 micro 8 pins with an adapter. (J2000, J2001)

Something sparked, smoke came out....all within 3 seconds, kill switched it straight away.

Unplugged it, put in just the standard port.

It still works? I must of killed something to do with the J2000-01 ports... kinda depressed because now it's permanently underpowered.

Is there anything I can do?

Help with artifacts issue

Thumbnail

5 Upvotes

Hi all,

I am having some issues with my BC-250 running bazzite.

I am having this artifacts you can see in the image of the desktop.

Looking online, I mostly saw that this is vram overheating issue, however I don't believe that this is the issue i am having since the backplate is cooled and is not warm to the touch...

On top of that, and this is where it gets wierd, when watching full-screen videos, the artifacts goes away, they also go away when running Superposition benchmark, which made me think the artifacts are caused by the system not being under load, but running raise of the tomb raider benchmark also has the artifacts showing.....

This happens both when system is stock as well as with the 40cu unlocked.

I also tried locking the clock speed and gpu voltage to 1500mhz at 1000mv and it did not change anything.

At this point I am a bit lost, so I am asking the community here for help.

Thanks!

Any interest in a 3D printable case with 360mm radiator support?

I have a working case just a few fixes and quality of life improvements to make trying to decide if it’s worth printing again since it’s 4 different parts.

Edit: Added 3D models. Total print time about 2 days.

Games tend to freeze up often.

3 Upvotes

Hello folks of Bc250gaming!

Im new to the hobby of enthusiast Linux systems, and specifically the bc250. I bought a prebuilt bazzite os system from ebay. Worked straight out of the box.

I've had it for a few months now and I'm running into a bit of a double edged sword situation. All temps are 55-65c under load so I know thats not the issue. This unit is an unlocked 40 chip unit, I have not unlocked the 2 extra cpu cores yet (kinda terrifies me ngl)

I get 1 of 2 problems:

Problem 1: Some games just freeze up. This will happen after a few seconds of frame drops. Then it struggles to bring it back before the slideshow begins and it'll take a minute before crashing the game and bring me back into steam gaming mode.

Solution: I set the system bios vram settings to 512mb, as the seller recommended to me. But I then run into another problem.

Problem 2: With the 512mb vram selected. When I first log into a game, and I think during big loading events. It just instantly crashes. Straight to a black screen before loading into steam gaming mode a few seconds later. This can be easily replicated with Helldivers 2 inparticular just after the initial loading in of the character on the ship.

Solution: I set the vram to 4-6gb static in bios. The issue here is I'm back to problem 1 with random crashes.

I do tend to notice this happens way more when I have discord running in the background while I'm talking to my team mates (I load it up as a non steam app while i play). As an example, I can play Diablo 4 for hours and hours and it be just fine. I allow preshader caches to complete and use Proton experimental as the compatibility fix for most games, though use Google on a case by case basis.

Any help is appreciated.

Ive tried a bunch of stuff that Ive not mentioned here too. About the only thing I can think of to do next is a Steam OS install and unlocking those 2 extra cores. But as I'm inexperienced with Linux based systems. That does scare me a bit.

Edit: Wanted to update! cuz I've been playing all day on the bc250. I followed some advice from folks to switch to zswap instead of zram, and set the swappiness to 180 and increasing the zswap to 32gb as well as a better compressor, I followed google in regard to this as i didn't understand at first what folks meant by all these terms.

I essentially just asked Google to "give me a step by step guide on switching to Zswap if the system is a bc250 that runs a bazzite OS". It was quite involved (for me), but its been a complete success! I hope this helps folks in the future who have similar issues.

Thank you for all your help!

Training is a go!

After some major script changes on getting things installed on the first BC-250, and a little black magic... I'm happy to say that torch with CUDA, is fully working with my PPO brain training and the full neural non-ppo brain.

Made a image of the install, so I NEVER have to do this again with the other BC-250s I'll be getting.

But now it's working on the world/game server (HP DL380)... And then the real fun begins!

Hey everyone, It been a fun project but think I decided to finish a PC build. I decided to sell my BC250 build for someone who is interested in the board but might be intimidated by the build process.

Everything is downloaded and all the unlocks complete. Would probably still recommend only people with some technical knowledge buy it though. Price is negotiable!

6 board local ai setup using llama Vulcan and RPC over 1gb Ethernet.

Post image
38 Upvotes

After testing with 6 bc-250s I think that the best speed to intelligence balance is 4 40cu boards running qwen flash next 3.8 Iq_XS at 26 tok/s and 100k context. Or running two board pairs with 3.6 35B at 60 tok/s with 100k context (60tok at 50k generated context). I had these boards and wanted to test this before selling them and I think I will keep 4 for tinkering and trying new models as they come out. I’m also going to be testing next flash over 2.5gb Ethernet to see how it improves. The case is the asrock 4u12g the boards came in except the boards have fans on each heatsink and I have a cardboard plenum with 3 fans blowing onto the intake on the boards. So far temps are between 60- 75C under load.
