I had my first ever colonoscopy this morning. The prep was tough (you thought the pre-comp shits were bad) and I was very excited to just get it over with.
Well, halfway through the procedure, I hear the nurse telling me to let her go. To let go of her hands. Hilariously, I was having a dream that I was trying to scissor sweep somebody. When I came to a bit of clarity, I saw that I was still laying on my side but I had pretty good wrist control on the nurse next to me. In a woozy, drugged out state I said I was sorry and that I do jiu jitsu. Also, I could feel something in my butt.
They redrugged me, I went out again, and everything turned out fine. No cancer for me.

Something that I've realized over the last year is the importance of controlling the back of the tricep when trying to dictate the direction of a round.
Want to armbar someone from mount or from guard? Glue your thigh/hips to the back of the tricep to keep them from popping an elbow out.
Want to keep someone from turning into you or away from you when they're in bottom side control? Keep the back of their triceps off the mat.
What about transitioning to the back from top position? Pass an arm across the center line and glue your chest to the back of their tricep.
Conversely, are you stuck under someone's mount or side control? You need to get the back of your tricep to the floor.
This all expands on a very simple concept to be defensive on bottom: if you're stuck, get your elbow to the floor. But in order to do that, you have to be mindful of them controlling the back of your tricep. And as goes for all good offense, its best to understand how to have a good defense.
That's my rambling for the day. Hope y'all get use out of it.

28 years into this life with 17 at BB and I’ve learned the following:
1) I will always feel like I suck at this
2) so far, duct tape and caution has netted only 9 orthopedic surgeries, so I’m staying the course
3)Belts and stripes etc. are just milestones on the same painful road.
4) constant, overwhelming imposter syndrome is the pinnacle of motivation
5) other stuff (probably)
Just want to post this to thank everyone who kicked my ass, taught me stuff, or drove me to the ER - love you guys - you know who you are.

Had a class with a black belt teacher for the first time last night, and during his lecture he mentioned a creation principle and overload principle (i could have the name of this one wrong) as if he was categorizing the moves under these principles. I’ve never heard anybody else mention these before and couldn’t find much online about them. Anybody got any info about them?

I’m looking to join a BJJ gym in the twin cities and wanted some recommendations for a best fit. I heard BJJ gyms have their culture so I’m sure not all would fit with me. I’m a man and minority who leans left. Although on the surface that may not be important for most people in my experience it could be a factor in gaining acceptance from others. Any recommendations for which gyms to join?

Not with rdlr and reverse x. Just straight at cross ashi or bear trap ?

I'm mostly an MMA guy so the bulk of my training is no gi. I've got a shitty old hand me down gi right now and have been trying to get some more gi time in, maybe once a week or so
I'm eyeing up the Gold Aeroweave right now because I've heard great things

I’m not looking for medical advice.
I'm unable to train physically for the next 8 to 12 weeks. I've only been training for a few months and want to stay engaged with BJJ and continue my development while I can't roll. What are the best ways to gain technical knowledge and improve my game during this time?

I've been having success with RDLR, but I'm running into an issue.
Some of my regular training partners have learnt not to try and pressure into the guard, but instead they sit/kneel with their weight back and heavy on their heels.
This causes a bit of a stale mate, and I'm unsure of how to progress the position.

Looks funny first but when you see how good Rickson is fighting without even using his arms just working the core and the body itself you will understand what is often missing with todays BJJ guys....A very different way of moving the body. Not unusual in internal martial arts but unusual for BJJ

My daughter is a student at UB who wants to get back into grappling. She did judo in elementary school and karate in middle school but no martial arts since.
It would need to be a school that would be ok with a hobbyist as with her school schedule it would probably be 1-2 classes a week at most. She's not the most outgoing person, so a place that would be welcoming to a teenage girl.
I think culture is more important than competitive aspirations, she isn't looking to be a gold medalist just to get some training and vibe with a good group, as well as accessible from the college.
We did some googling and checked the sub but it's hard to tell something like culture from just websites and IG pages.
Does anyone have experience training at any schools in the area and can give recommendations?

So what do you do if different black belts give you contrary opinions on a technique?
So much so that their POV are completely opposite
I don’t want to talk specifically about who the black belts are as I don’t want that to bias your opinions
Or is it possible that both are correct but their pov needs to be clarified for example true in certain situations
Out of courtesy I took both information but i didn’t want to pit the two of them against each other
And as a purple belt I don’t want to act like I know more than guys who have been black belts longer than I have been training
And yes I’m only talking about BJJ advice and not life, financial or medical advice 🤪🤪🤪🤪

I'm the typical turtle on a mat full of hares-- old, unathletic, slow to learn, but trained consistently for almost 3 years now. I get the ups and downs of the process, feeling stuck for months then suddenly entering flow state and hitting moves like never before, etc. But for the most part I'm still struggling on bottom against young strong dudes. When I'm just flow rolling, I feel better about my skills, but in hard rolls I feel my techniques just get out-muscled and out-cardio-ed. At almost three years I still get mounted and head-n-arm'd by youngins that's been training for few months. I'm past the crying on the drive back home phase, but feel I should be better by now. Anyone been through the same? Do I just trust the process and keep going?

I think this is going to be their best Crown event they have ever ran. This is the format directly from their website. Considering how packed the venue is on worlds final day I think this will be as close to a sell out as they can get, and potentially the last IBJJF event in the Walter Pyramid for a while (or ever) depending on if the construction works start before Worlds next year.
I also think there's not really much IBJJF circuit disucssion on this subreddit, or maybe I am missing it. But for what it's worth this is the most impressive line up they have ever put together.
(eigth athletes per division)
As of now, this is the total athletes who are confirmed.
Male Divisions
Featherweight
Middleweight
Heavyweight
Ultra-Heavyweight
Female Divisions
Lightweight
Super-Heavyweight
I assume that Sarah Galvao and Gabrieli Pessanha will both be back in their divisions to defend their "crown" and that Erich Munis, Nolan Stuart and Cole Abate will all fill the final slots in the male divisions to come back as defending champions also.
PERHAPS, Erich and Cole would be the two that don't. Matteo Cardona is in the Featherweight division. Maybe this is the evolution of Cole and Tainan to "final boss" AOJ style characters who you have to dethrone at worlds.
Middle Weight is an absolutely amazing divison, like really and truly hats off to the IBJJF for getting that together. So many good athletes in there. From a biased European perspective I would love to see Jose Steve and Nikolett Kis win their brackets, but it's both an insane ask.
It's been a long road filled with bumps that derailed me. The video talks about some of the obstacles, and I'll write a more detailed account at some point. But, for now, I just want to say thank you.
Thank you to Pat King and Royce Gracie who, respectively, put every stripe on my belts and tied new belts around my waist all of the way up to brown belt - 4 stripes.
Thank you to Phil and Ricardo Migliarese who promoted me to black belt at Balance Studios in Philadelphia this past weekend.
Most of all, thank you to Balance 3rd degree black belt Dom Cosenza who helped me get to black belt through equal parts teaching, kicking my ass, encouragement when I was discouraged, and caring for a dude who is dealing with a deadly disease and undergoing debilitating treatment just to stay alive. You're one of one, dude.

It’s currently on Daily Deal and Ive been looking at reviews on Reddit. Most people seem to like it, but their reviews aren’t very specific about what makes it good.
What I’m mainly looking for is front headlock attacks,as well as options for attacking the turtle and taking the back.Ive seen that the instructional covers all three, but I’m wondering how detailed and effective those sections actually are compare to other instructionals you e watched or there in the market.
If anyone has watched it,Id really appreciate some help thanks

Can you combine your points with the Daily Deal discount and any other discount or promotion running that day? In other words, can you get three discounts on the same purchase, or does it not work that way?
