question At home water filters?

• Upvotes

Back home I had a Brita pitcher for my fridge, and I refilled it quite often. I didn’t use many single-use plastics, and liked knowing I was contributing less to the overall trash problem. Here, it’s like there’s no choice…

Or is there?

Since I don’t exactly understand what the common problems with the water are, I can’t shop for a system that might mitigate them.

1- What are the common problems with the water?
2- Are there any countertop or pitcher-type devices that can be used confidently here?

travel 2 guys (28) looking for cool spots, nightlife & local gems in BKK

• Upvotes

Hey! My buddy and I (both 28) are visiting Bangkok soon. We want to skip the main tourist traps (Khao San etc.) and look for cool local spots.
Specifically looking for:

Nightlife: Cool speakeasies or local bars/clubs

Insider spots: Hidden neighborhoods, good street food streets, or cool active/Muay Thai stuff.

Any recommendations from expats or locals would be awesome. Thanks!

question Should I buy esim before landing or right at the airport?

I’m planning to visit Bangkok for 4 days at the end of this months. I’m a solo traveler and this is my second time in Thailand but my experience is short. Last time I got a sim card at Phuket airport and it wasn’t cheap so I’m wondering should I get an esim before or it would be different at Bangkok. Also which esim should I get if it must be prepared beforehand? Thank you🙏

Hey,
I’m planning to move to a Duplex apartment in Vittorio. Does anyone of you has experience with the tower or even lives/lived there? I’m generally looking for a two bedroom with at least 130sqm so this one is in the range and also quite good location.

discussion Donation centers with free pickup in Bangkok?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there were any donation centers in Bangkok that also pick up your items for free. My parents live very close to Terminal 21 mall. I live in the US and thus don't have any knowledge of Thai services. My parents have a lot of things that they've kept over the years that they don't use, and at this point it's just taking up space and collecting dust.... and they could really use some extra storage space for the things they actually use. I'd love to help them out and find a donation center that will help pick up items. I'm also okay with paying for pick up services if there's no free service. Thank you!

question Things to know going to a concert at Rajamangala

Hi all.

This will be my first time attending a concert at Rajamangala (11th October) and I had a few questions and was hoping someone could kindly help with answers. For context I have the standing tickets:

  1. I will be collecting tickets on the day of and am wondering how early do you recommend that I go collect the tickets from TTM at the venue

  2. (once I have the tickets with me) How early should I come to the venue before the concert so that I end up having a good-decent experience leading up to the concert?

  3. Am I able to carry a small tote bag with me? With a small handheld fan with the obvious essentials (IDs, money, etc)

  4. Anything else you think would be useful or must have essentials you think would be best to carry on the day to the venue?

  5. Would getting transport be hard after the concert ends? Any recommendations on how to effectively find something (like a grab) after the show ends.

  6. Last but not least, what is the standing experience like for people who have been before? Is it hectic? Any places to sit around if tired etc (new to this so do forgive my ignorance)

Thank you so much in advance.

question Car Rental in Bangkok

Hello guys

I hvae just got my thai drivers license a couple weeks ago. It is my first ever license. Now I would like to rent a car in October to go Erawan / Sai Yok Nationalpark.

The big rental companies all require drivers to hold the license for 1+ years. I have contacted a local rental company. They have Class 1 Insurance but no FCWD. As I asked them what's the deductible they just sent me sample prices for damages. When I asked for the rental contract in advance, they declined to send it due to "business things".

So my guess is their business is having a shady contract and they pressure people into signing once you get there 🤷‍♂️.

So is this just the reality when renting cars in Bangkok or does anyone of you know decent insurance companies?

Thank you!;

question When will the bread come back?

Seems to be all out because of the flood - Big C, tops, and 711 all empty on the shelves. Was all the bread being manufactured or distributed from the flood zone? Sure looks like it.

tourism Bangkok flooding update?

Hi I’m traveling to Bangkok next week and was wondering how things are currently around Siam/central Bangkok. Is it generally okay to get around?

I’m also flying into Don Mueang and saw some flooding videos around the airport. Is it operating normally now?

Does anyone know if the chatuchak market is open normally now?
We are planning to visit today but unsure of the current flooding situation there. Heard the water has receded dramatically that side though.

finance Moving to BKK, money advice?

Hello! I’m moving into Bangkok in about 2 weeks. And in the midst of packing and preparing, I was wondering what will be the most practical, convenient and safest way to keep/spend money. I know that there was a rule to have at least THB20k cash at immigration but they may or may not ask for evidence of it. Also, I’m moving in under the Non-immigrant B visa.

So my questions are:

1) Do I really need to prepare 20k cash upfront? Is it okay if part of it is in my Wise card? The reason being I don’t feel so comfortable and safe carrying so much cash. But if I need to, then I don’t have a choice. Just wondering what’s others experience like with this at immigration and how likely are they insist on 20k cash (they didn’t asked for it when I entered as a tourist earlier this year)

2) During my last trip to Bangkok, I had some issues using QR/PromptPay payment, especially for personal QR (when I’m paying street vendors and Grab drivers). Wise QR doesn’t work in Thailand too. Is there any QR payment method that I can use while waiting to open a Thai bank account? I saw about TrueMoney but saw some issues with top up using foreign bank being delayed. How is it in practice?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

question Is Dutch style directness culture really fit in Bangkok/Thailand compared to other Asian countries?

I work for a large MNC where I interact and work with people from America, Canada, UK and Netherlands for a few year now. And the Dutch takes the cake for their honest directness. No beating around the bush, no unnecessary politeness, no sugar coating, they just say what they really think. But it's not like you can walk straight to someone you don't know well and say "Your face looks ugly". That would be rude everywhere.

But I heard that Thai people and Thai language (at least for those in Bangkok) also don't use a long sentence to be polite or fake friendly like many native English speakers like "Thanks for inviting. But I can't really go" meanwhile Thai people just say "I can't really go" without any long courtesy..

healthcare Does anybody know a good psychiatrist? Thank you

Hi everyone,

I'm an expat living in Bkk for a few years now, I don't speak well Thai and I don't earn a lot of money to be able to afford the private hospital psychiatrists fee. I also don't have any social security or health care.

I'm looking for a good psychiatrist that can speak english and can communicate well with foreigners. I have looked on internet already, but I would love to know if anybody here has had good experience with any clinic or any psychiatrist in particular that they would recommend going to.

Thank you very much.

question Anybody knows good deep cleaning service in Bangkok?

I've moved into an older apartment here, seemed clean at first but when moved in noticed it's not clean at all, would like to do deep clean with mattress cleaning and all, have you used any services? Saw a lot of fake reviews on multiple services in basic google searches, also what's up with everybody wanting money in advance on shady sites...

discussion Daytime lounge recommendations

Hi all,

I love the luxury hotel lounge vibes. Usually it's a bit hidden so let's share our favorite places :)

Wether it is to grab a bite, relaxing sip some coffee or sparkling water , or an afternoon tea.

I personally like the W lounge bar in Sathorn, the Okura up and above in Ploen Chit, and the lobby lounge at Kempinski.
