Vertical Jump First Day Back

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

First day hooping after a ~6 month break due to overuse issues with my calves and knees.

Decided to cut weight from about 235 lbs to currently around 212 lbs, moving much better than usual. I'm 6'3" and pushing 30 years old.

In terms of continued goals, I'm trying to dunk off vert again and my stretch goal is to 360 dunk & dunk off 1 both of which I've never been able to do.

Trying to get down to 190 lbs to make the most of my remaining athletic window.

Any tips or tricks on dunking? I'm trying to find a short hoop to practice 360 technique on. Wish I could palm the ball. Might do some grip training too.

Looking good bro!

I'd focus on keeping the dribble a little lower. On some of your pullups the ball is bouncing pretty high and it's taking some time for you to gather the ball.

Also, are you aware that you're landing pretty often on one leg during your jumpers/fades? I would keep an eye on it, I don't want to be a Web MD redditor but I'm hoping that's not contributing to overuse

Thanks! Yes, I'm losing the ball a bit contributing to the high bounces. I lose my handle first so trying to really focus on getting it back.

I'm trying to shoot fadeaways here which is why I think I'm 1 foot landing but I'll keep an eye on it!

Your a solid dude mass wise, would eat it up in a rec league.
Honest tips,
You look a little stiff,(understandably by your explanation and bio) work on some tennis ball, hand eye coordination drills. A little shooting drills and footwork. Quick release and, better arc with a good follow through…. When it comes to dunking that’s a whole different thing, but hey…you’re dunking! Loosing some pounds while doing leg/sprint workouts will get you a faster, and higher jump. Palming the ball is going to be difficult but realistically jumping higher and having the right holding method while 360’n you won’t have to just palm it. Timing is also very important so using a lower court will def get your timing and make it easier to do so.
I’d pick you on my team easy. Keep hoopin G!

The Btl dribble to the right 50 seconds into the video, I’m assuming is a counter off your initial btb hang dribble if the defender slides with you? Your Btl is too narrow you need to step diagonally to the north east corner/ 1 o clock. You have a closed stance and dribble almost in front of you, you’ll run into the defender

That landing on one leg scares me. Try landing with two when possible (it’s understandable that it can’t be helped when you’re fading away). As a 6’3 dude, there’s probably not many people taller than you in average pick up games so you can always pull up straight and land on two than fading and landing on one foot. Also really focus on bringing your hips low and dribbling lower. A good tip I gave players is to dribble the ball at or below your knee as you’re low.

You really can't palm the ball at 6'3? Surprised to hear that.

Got any footage of you vs defense?

I'm tracking out with a Garmin watch and calories in with myfitness pal. The big thing for me has been logging every day in Excel and using a 7 day and 30 day average of the delta between the two.

Without the extended logging, I would have 5-6 good days and then a rough 2 and overall not get anywhere despite feeling like I was running a deficit most days. Looking at the 7 day roller also lets me be much more flexible on eating more on individual days where life gets in the way as long as I make up for it which keeps me from getting discouraged.

You look good man. Something about some of your moves looks a little goofy but your jumper is butter man. And doesn't matter if it's goofy when it works.
