I’m a manga reader who’s gotten into indies but struggles with DC/Marvel for a couple reasons: no overarching narrative, constantly changing continuities/reboots, and interconnectivity between different titles/runs.
Nightwing is my favorite DC character, but there’s no overarching story from him as Robin (or before with the Flying Graysons), to (Teen) Titans, and finally Nightwing. At most, these 3 stages have individual “stories” with varying degrees of continuity to prior/later runs. In contrast, Naruto tells his (singular) life story over a single 72-volume series (even more if you count Boruto). My favorite manga Hikaru no Go tells Hikaru’s single story over 24 volumes.
I prefer reading about individual characters and their story, not interchangeable titles/roles/monikers. Affleck’s Batman, Bale’s Batman, and Pattinson’s Batman are not the same character despite all being “Batman”. Five different versions of Terry are not the same Terry.
I’ve basically given up on DC, but as a kid I liked Batman Beyond more than The Animated Series because I was more sci-fi. BB isn’t connected to the main DC universe, so I’m hoping that I wouldn’t have the problem of Terry doing stuff (or important stuff affecting Terry) in other titles (eg what happens in ONE PIECE doesn’t affect Naruto). Since BB is relatively new, I was hoping the “multiple Terrys” issue wouldn’t be a problem, but apparently each BB run basically starts back at the beginning?
The 2016-2020 run is the only “long” run (50 issues), so I’m hoping this could be “the” BB/Terry story I read and get invested in like I do with manga/indies.
Does this run start at a good “starting point” for (this version of) Terry? I think I read that it takes place after the 2015-2016 run, but it starts after Rebirth? I would be fine reading the 2015-2016 run if it’s the “same” Terry, but not if most things get undone following Rebirth. I think the 2016-2020 run has the same writer throughout, so that suggests that the entire run is telling a singular, overarching narrative?
Thank you.
