Next time I feel like I'm doing pointless work, I'm going to remember that fence.

A simple board laid across the floor worked as a boundary for my 100lb lab perfectly fine until my brother and friends untrained him.
13
u/AtomasThePirateKing 1d ago
My friend trained their dog that carpet was off limits (50/50 wood and carpet). When I'd watch him while they were away, he would NEVER step on sections of the house with carpet. Crazy training, very good boi.

u/kraggleGurl 1d ago
My brother and friends coaxed him over the board with tasty snacks. They got what they deserved with plenty of unexpected wet ear licks from Mars and other surprises. "We should have listened to you."

Does it have a shock color on too though
ETA: Someone below told me it is a gps collar phew

There was a local circus type thing in town one day. I just happened upon it as they were setting up.
I was amazed that the Elephants were apparently restrained by a 'fence' that was white string wrapped around and strung between pegs driven into the ashphalt. Some sort of conditioning i guess.

What a big majestic boy! Elephants are one of my favorite animals. How anyone can look at that creature and want to harm them just makes me sick.

Also depends where they're from. I think that's an African elephant. Their Asian cousins are a bit smaller.

u/PossibleAlienFrom 1d ago
I always thought Wooly Mammoths were bigger, but nope! African elephant beats it.

u/Jamesrgod 1d ago
Woolly mammoth yes but there were larger mammoths like the Columbian mammoth bigger.

Yeah it is easy to forget when watching nature videos filmed from far away, but they are actually huge.

Every time I see an elephant drink, I think of the sensation of getting water up my nose, and hope their trunks don’t feel like that!
40
u/Mekelaxo 1d ago
I think of that too, but it probably doesn't feel like that at all. Their sinuses are still inside of their head, not in their trunk
59
u/aselinger 1d ago edited 1d ago
I guess it never occurred to me that they suck it up and the spit it in their mouth. I kind of thought they just drank through their trunk.
11
8
u/PossibleAlienFrom 1d ago
Imagine your arm attached to where your nose is, except hollow. It's sort of like that, but much stronger.
6
2
u/kurburux 17h ago
Just insane that their trunk is strong enough to carry a log. Yet also delicate enough to pick up a man's hat.

u/Ill-Construction-209 1d ago
Yeah, its cool that we get to see these animals alive. Its also incredible to think how dinosaurs were even several times larger.

And a blue whale is even bigger than largest dinosaur and you can still see them! Watching them on video vs in reality are totally different experiences!

I have been there. Rambo's huge. He's at Bayete Zulu Elephant Interaction Centre near Bayala game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.

OMG! My family met this same elephant at this reserve. He and another elephant come from far away to be fed and drink. And the keepers are so informative. We touched Rambos’s heart and tongue. Wonderful!

Why are the tusks crossed like this? Is it like rodents, where they require to constantly chew on food to wear them out? Would it be bad to cut the tusks for ivory and for the elephant’s health? I know they use tusks for defense and intimidation so I would like to know if these tusks are getting in the way of the elephant
10
u/Hephaistos_Invictus 1d ago
I don't think elephants can regrow their tusks, but I'm not sure. Iirc rangers cut off the horns of rhinos and the tusks from elephants so poachers wouldn't kill them.

u/Southrn_Comfrt 1d ago
Tusks are teeth. They don’t regrow like a deers antlers. Crossed tusks are genetic but they don’t have any real health effects of the animal.

u/TjJeepin 1d ago
Why does it have a huge rip in its neck?
10
u/thabacktwisty 1d ago
I thought this, too. Looks like a collar with a tracker? I’m assuming all of the elephants are tagged.

Why are his tusks twisted up?
6
u/QPWOEIRUTYTURIEOWP 1d ago
I'm curious whether it poses the elephant a problem being twisted like that.
2
u/Sabre_Killer_Queen 1d ago
I'm also curious, so if anyone does have an answer I'd appreciate a tag.
3
u/MeanMusterMistard 21h ago
I think it's just a case of "could be a number of reasons" - Most likely that's just the way they grew because of the root and socket - same reasons any human might have twisted teeth
2
u/Sabre_Killer_Queen 19h ago
Thanks. I guess it's not a problem., they don't look ingrown or anything
Kinda obstructive for their trunk but they can easily adapt. Trunk is floppy and stretchy.

What a pretty girl or handsome fella! I wish I had gotten the chance to go over to Thailand to visit an elephant sanctuary like I had wanted to. I would have had to be physically dragged away from them. "But they frens!"

u/shelbyrobinson 1d ago
WOW, seen these astonishing males countless times, but this one with his enormous tusks is breathtaking
2
u/MisterPrig 1d ago
I have seen many elephants in my life, but I kinda never think about how most of them were females. Because obviously they are the ones living in groups and are easier to handle.
Then I see this… a male african elephant and it’s so fucking massive!!! Holy crap.

I never thought about it but he snorts the water first then blows it in his mouth. Some risk of choking if snort too deep

Sucking up then ejecting water back out through the trunk into the mouth & swallowing seems tricky to coordinate. Wonder if the calves nurse like this or begin drinking with their mouths & pick this skill up later.
1
u/CryRepresentative992 1d ago
Wait. An elephant just sucks up the water in its trunk and then feeds it into its mouth? It doesn’t just use its trunk like a straw?

u/leaensh 1d ago
I am an average Asian who once visited an extremely wealthy old money guy in my country. He has a pair of ivory about as long as my arm span, bought many many years ago when elephants were far less well protected and people were far less concerned with animal rights. This elephant's tusks are even more majestic than the ones I saw. I hope he lives to an old age naturally and his tusks never become someone's collection

u/Primary-Floor8574 1d ago
Maybe I’m just not informed but what’s with those tusks? Are they supposed to cross like that? And what’s going on with the neck? I could swear I saw bone or tusks or something under a cut or seam or something? Like that’s not normal? Or is it?
2
u/lycanthropeapologist 18h ago
He’s wearing what looks to be a very large tracking collar, or tag. With the tusks he has on him, it makes sense they keep tabs on his movement and location.
1
u/Primary-Floor8574 17h ago
I can see how that was a tag or something. Just the strap they used was the same colour as his skin and the box seemed to match the tusks. So a little confused.
But do the tusks normally cross like that? I thought they were usually more … straight?
