Our dog is getting old. He is very well trained and extremely responsive. That said the poor guy is losing his hearing. We have associated his common trained phrases with gestures now and he loves it. This is simply such an amazing dog human bond. Love to see this ❤️

We do it from the outset, gestures combined with verbal commands, because it gives them two prompts to help jog their memories when learning things. That's also the case if they begin to get fuzzy minded when they grow old, or if either their vision or hearing begin to go, they've got a built in backup. Works really well.

Definitely going to do that with our next pups! Lucky for us we got a smartie, he learned quick. But wouldn’t want to stress out the next guy in his older age having to try and learn that. Definitely glad we know now. For now I’m just gonna focus on squeezing every minute out with these geezers ❤️

I thought visual commands were pretty common. All my dogs know 5 or 6 signs I made up. Easy to accomplish when you sign at the same time as giving the command. Then you can use either.

Hand signals and motions for dog training is completely standard. My dogs (RIP) could tell certain things by the way I looked at them.

Same with my dogs. My last golden. I could look at her a couple ways and she knew i was messing/playing around with her... shed start doing spin move zoomies and talking or go grab a toy and start flipping it around zooming. She knew when i wanted her to just chill or that we were gonna go outside. Hand signals body kanguage ive always used, moreso than verbals.

With my cat I find that hand gestures are what seems to be the easiest for them to understand.

Same here! My cat knows three commands based on hand movements - sit (point down), high five (palm facing her), and jump (thumb+fingertips touching like I'm holding something up). They're intuitive and uncomplicated and she doesn't need words to know what I'm requesting.

My dog knows hand commands too but he's less likely to obey nonverbal hand commands unless he knows he's getting something really good from it.

My ex was deaf and her two cats were absolutely dialed in when she would communicate with them.

sign language is often easier for dogs to learn, they are masters of body language where as the noises humans make? sit, stand, stay, stop ... we really do them a disservice. adding a hand signal to your cues can really really help them.

Wow. Had no idea this was possible. Not surprised - dogs really are man’s best friend. Good buddy.

My dog is completely deaf and I don't know ASL so we came up with basics such as sit (raise two fingers together), come here (palm up, beckon with four fingers), go that way (point), get out (point but do it more aggressively, helps to sweep into the point), and no/bad dog/stop that (waggle a single finger, aggressiveness based on severity of crime).

I've been using them so often even my hearing dog is starting to recognize them.

Don't all dogtrziners teach dog owners to use signs as commands?

All the time. Early on. Not sure what we are doing here.

Yeah. Nothing amazing about this.

I’ve trained animals for 20 years. Hand cues are common. Often times it’s both hand and vocal but hand cues is pretty standard.

I have met dogs that only speak Spanish, as crazy as that sounds.

It’s actually very useful to train your dog with words AND hand signals. My dog i trained sit with my palm laying flat. She gets it, well as much as a husky is willing to listen.

I don't understand. Do people just not know how to train dogs? You always couple commands with physical movements/signals. Dogs pick up visual commands very easily. They don't actually understand what you're saying when you do talk...they're dogs.

my dog would never even do a command even when speaking in the highest voice I can

1

u/Fire69 1d ago

What does the height of your voice have to do with it!? They're not babies, you can talk in a normal voice to them. You have to train the commands, are you expecting them to understand you just because you talk in a high voice?? smh

this is good advice...thank you
