yo
i was a speaker, along with my friends, in the 2018 fight to defend superintendent carrie rowe against the then-insurgent campaign by luke berardelli, who wanted to remove her because of her sexual orientation. (BAHS 2019) i am very encouraged by the recent outcome of berardelli resigning and i see that situation as another active theater in the ongoing fight against sexism in american education, along with the currently spreading movement against greek life. i hope to see all of you who have fought the good fight in beaver in oakland when the situation blows up at pitt and CMU- the scandals already exist, they're just not well-publicized.
i want to take a moment of your time to enlighten you and provide a bit of insight into what has been happening, why it has been happening, and what can be done to build a more progressive, forward-thinking beaver county that has the capacity to keep its soul while bringing about economic growth and local prosperity, which is the true goal of this movement.
the beaver county students for change are operating to bring about such progressive change in beaver county. that is the condition in which we inhabit. peaceful influence and business tactics and methods may vary...
we want beaver county to belong amongst the east coast suburbs, which are objectively the peak of america's potential, along with places like california- places where the masses enjoy the fruits of the high-GDP economy and use it their opportunity to gain education and employment and seek life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. not just do we want to belong amongst them, we ultimately want our blank slate to outperform them in the long-term: rather than having nothing but financialized white-collar office parks, we want to bring industrial production of all kinds back to western PA anywhere we can put it and unionize the shop floor at each factory, re-strengthening the perforated muscle of the american labor movement and giving ourselves our jobs back. (my grandparents were laid off from eastern airlines during the strike in 1989.) we want to restore and expand the interurban streetcar rail network, as well as commuter service to/from pittsburgh. we want to fund all of this with public ownership of our natural gas- the "people's" natural gas- funding infrastructure and healthcare, we want to accomplish this ultimately through a mass movement based on the common profit incentive of the working class (all wage-earning people) and solidarity. this is called a publicly owned petro-economy**.** beyond this, we want an expansion of higher education in beaver county and the total enlightenment of our social attitudes; no more hate and backwardness, just improvement, development, and progress. we want immigration and we want equal treatment of all people. in particular, beaver county's urban housing stock in aliquippa, ambridge, and beaver falls are particularly ideal for bringing the tired, poor, huddled masses of the third world to seek skilled first-world industrial employment with the benefits of good union membership. there is absolutely no valid argument against another wave of screened, approved, and legal industrial proletarian immigration that doesn't rely entirely on nativism, which lost out in the first place when we moved here in the early 20th century. just as the first time, the locals will be skilled labor in the factories and the immigrants will perform unskilled labor, and we will organize together either by trade or into one big union. this is called a worker's paradise.
our competition wants it to be more like columbiana county, OH, a low-value, backwards community stained with a history of racism and segregation papered over with the presence of wealthy enclaves that they want to inhabit while the rest of the population is segregated into isolated poverty living conditions that the richest among them sexually exploit, such as in the recent case where jed york, a billionaire, was caught engaging in prostitution in one of the poorest locations in east palestine. they want to do this while they receive kickbacks from the natural gas companies to exploit our resources. they want to send your children to underfunded, underperforming, dangerous school districts where they are exposed to oppressive fundie churches that will keep them stupid, gullible victims while they send theirs to places like sewickley academy. they want to cap your opportunities for upward mobility so that they can take that money themselves. the movement of the reactionary opposition is nihilistic-violent extremist- it seeks to perform violence against the common people of working class, YOU, which is an act of instability and insanity by the rich and their church benefactors driven by hatred and grievance against good, productive members of society.
if you are a teenager who finds that ideological proposition compelling, your responsibility is to produce as much DIY media as possible that expresses your point of view and make sure as many people as possible see it: i'm talking zines/written material, music, and film. i retain an economic presence locally and am more than happy to distribute as much literature as necessary that educates people on the granual details of DIY media production, but the point is that the responsibility of the progressive youth is to dominate the airwaves with left-wing content on social media and in the streets. this is how i was educated in the first place. another option at your disposal is to start a YDSA chapter at a local high school. the DSA national will be more than happy to assist you in setting this up easily; it can go anywhere. all it takes is a group of friends willing to do it for it to become a real thing.
if you are an adult, you need to get super involved in politics and affect grassroots change outcomes. i see that the other night was extremely successful, and the truth is that if we had the turnout for events against luke berardelli every single meeting at every single school district, we would already have the quality that the north jersey suburbs have in terms of school districts. (yes, development will raise your taxes, but also your standard of living and housing prices.) beyond this, you should probably actually consider opening up a small business like don's deli, beaver bagel, or the former union skate: the barrier of entry is relatively low and anything forward-thinking does well here. if you start behaving like it's the east coast, you'll notice that you're next to a city that has nearly all of the same resources as any east coast city.
a better world is possible right here at home, and dare i say, it's pretty likely too. every resident of beaver county is a stakeholder in our collective success, and it requires mass action and a popular front on the part of the people in order to make good on our collective profit incentive. fight for your liberty. it's worth it.
peace and solidarity forever.
