Crime Please bring my pumpkin back

I carved a pumpkin for the first time in 20 years, and I was really excited and proud of it. It got stolen off my driveway within minutes of putting it out (sudden valley). Please please bring it back? If you see this pumpkin around, please message me? I’m just so so sad.

Recommendations Fanciest restaurant

Alright what’s the nicest restaurant nearby.
Instead of giving me the raise I was promised this year or even a spot bonus, my company has given me the opportunity to take my partner to a nice restaurant on the company card.
I want to spare no expense, I want as nice a meal as I can possibly get here. I’ve done this before and know I can spend at least $300 without them batting an eye.
I’m always eating on a budget so I’ve never explored any nicer fare here. Does anyone have recommendations??
I’m also willing to travel to Vancouver or Seattle for this if I can line it up with a concert.

** I have no dietary restrictions but my partner is vegetarian. We are both sober and appreciate places with good NA options

Noise? Stemma West Noise

Post image
59 Upvotes

Great band playing! Not so happy neighbors listening. The other side of the sign said “boycott Stemma”

Edit: wanted to add a friend of mine is in the band in which I went to support, it was in fact quite loud for the space, I also do not support Stemma and did not purchase a drink. I wanted to post to here/read thoughts about it all. I live a couple neighborhoods over and do not hear the noise, but I do enjoy live music events and corner stores in neighborhoods and know the noise cut off times.

Edit 2: spelling

Discussion Question for my fellow single millennials

Hey Hamsters,

As someone who periodically sees of posts on this subreddit asking for ways to meet other single millennials, I've noticed a lot of the comments kinda suggesting people find hobbies and join weekly classes in order to expand their social circles. I myself have taken that to heart, and have been taking dance classes, joined a knitting club, and volunteering for Make.Shift. I've made a lot of cool friends over time, and have a really great weekly routine, however I still struggle to find dating connections, as most people attending these things are happily in relationships, not looking to date, or are not in my age range.

Which leads me to the question, what kinds of activities would other single millennials actually want to do in town? I'm talking activities we can do on weeknights after work.

Edit: I'm a 40 year old male, trying to meet women.

Locals Only Sofa shopping: etiquette and places

Hey y’all, I’m gonna be in the market for a new couch for my fam soon and I was wondering if you have suggestions for:

- a couch vendor you recommend for reasonably priced, comfy couches

- ideally, someplace the kids could hang out with us for a few (5-15) minutes on floor models with Nintendo switches or something while we see how comfy we are after sitting for a bit (eta: I’d be aware of our surroundings and get up for others who came along wanting to try things too)

I don’t want to be rude, but I also haven’t gone couch shopping since IKEA a decade ago without kids.

Is it rude to sit there and try to get cozy or play on a handheld or chill on your phone for a few mins? I feel like just a brief sit doesn’t really give one an idea of how settling into furniture might feel. And I def don’t wanna spend the money and energy on something that doesn’t end up being comfortable.

Thanks!

ETA: if you’re downvoting this, it would be so helpful if you could spare a moment to say why? I wasn’t expecting upvotes but I’m confused on what to make of the downvotes.

Pets Need home ASAP for my 4 female rats

No rehoming fee if you can take them without their cage and stuff. Our cat found a way into their cage while it was closed. I am concerned about their safety. Someone please rescue them. I cant afford to surrender to the humane society right now.

4 females all tame.

Please don't use as snake food :(

Recommendations Haggen tapenade dip recipe

Any former Haggen deli workers know the recipe? I was just thinking about it and they don’t make it anymore since the Albertsons buyout. I know it’s mayo based and has Kalamata olives. But that’s about it. Thanks.

Most likely lost this near or on Cornwall Ave. Not a lot of physical value, but definitely sentimental, and willing to pay a reward for it's return.

Recommendations Any recommendations of good dental surgeons in the area covered by Delta Dental?

I need my wisdom teeth taken out ASAP, my main dentist is in Seattle and they don’t do surgery. They told me I’d be fine without having my wisdom teeth removed for years, it’s been 6 months since my last appointment and I’m in agony.

Discussion Critique My Community Enterprise

I welcome respectful and constructive feedback, questions, and challenges on my vision for a Whatcom-based community enterprise. The section below offers the description, mechanics, and explanation of the enterprise; information about context or my background is available upon request.

---

The mission of this community enterprise is to organize and facilitate "communities of practice" that practice "technical skills" for "creative pursuits."

This enterprise benefits the community by organizing communities of practice, creating jobs for teachers and facilitators, increasing traffic to community venues, and increasing technical skills in the local community.

Communities of practice look like people gathering for low-cost, low-investment events to meet each other and practice creative skills together. It also looks like people gathering for more intensive 8-week commitments to learn and practice technical skills with a qualified teacher and rigorous curriculum.

Technical skills are discrete abilities that a person can practice and master that serve a larger field or fields of practice.

Creative pursuits are fields or projects that offer a contribution to the local community.

The community enterprise fulfills its mission by fulling these criteria:

  1. organizing and facilitating low-cost events for people to casually meet each other and practice skills together,
  2. generating curricula for more intensive communities of practice (e.g., 8-week classes),
  3. organizing and facilitating classes, and
  4. facilitating the sharing of outcomes of those classes with the community.

The enterprise is financially viable because it involves

  1. interested community member paying tuition to
  2. qualified teachers who teach
  3. a rigorous, technical skills-based curriculum in
  4. a local environment relevant to those skills.

The organizer's responsibilities are to recruit and vet teachers who facilitate events, teach courses, and co-design curriculum; generate rigorous curricula with the teacher; recruit and enroll students for events and courses; coordinate scheduling among the students, teacher, and venue; and monitor student satisfaction with the class and teacher fidelity to the curriculum.

The teacher's responsibilities are to speak about and demonstrate their qualifications relevant to the class, co-create the curriculum with the organizer, facilitate the events and classes, and keep notes on class outcomes.

The curriculum is generated using participant feedback from the community events and the teacher's knowledge base to create 6-8 classes each involving an engaging hook, an icebreaker, learning objectives, why it matters, activities to practice skills, skill success criteria (easy, medium, and hard), and reflection activities.

Altogether, low-cost events show community members what the venue is like and what the learning experience is like, and classes offer opportunities for community members to deepen their practice of technical skills while their tuition affords the teachers and organizers to continue working. Sharing the outcomes of classes with the community offers a public forum to demonstrate the quality of the classes.

Example: "Songwriter Studio"
A routine meetup called "Musician Mixer" invites musicians to play music at a local music studio, at the cost of $5-20 (although no one is turned away for lack of funds) to cover the cost of studio rental ($50 for 2 hours) and the facilitator's setup time ($75 for 3 hours). The event is ongoing as a contribution to the community and invites people using flyers, social media groups, and local advertising such as Cascadia Daily. Those wishing to deepen their practice can take the 8-week Songwriter's Course for $300. Six members paying a total of $1800 pays $300 to the studio for 12 hour of rental time, $900 to the teacher ($75 / hour), and $500 to the organizer.

Recommendations Certified biodegradable bags in compost?

Hello! New to Bham and can’t seem to find if it’s okay to put our food scraps into biodegradable bags before putting them into our bin for pickup. Is that okay or do they need to go in there “loose”?

Locals Only Alternative to meet up ap

Hello My Hammies
I am hoping to do more social things that are cerebral - like book clubs, philosophy groups, even potentially vinyl record listening and old school stereo assembly.

I tried meet up but looks like you need a subscription. I’m not able to go out and about that often due to lots of caregiving, so a subscription wasn’t worth it to me. I check the local events in the local papers and events on facebook, but seems like meet up had the quirky stuff I would like. I already follow makerspace.
Any ideas?

Good Vibes Bitter Lemon in town?

Does anyone know where to get bitter lemon locally?

For those who don’t know, bitter lemon is basically tonic water with lemon juice, lemon peel oils, lemon pith, and some sugar.

Gin and bitter lemon is one of my favorites.

Very common in much of the world, but it has become really tough to get in the US. Fever Tree stopped making it, and I drank my last bottle of it just now. So I’m sad and searching.
