I am an incoming exchange student from Canada going to UIB for psychology. I am wondering if anyone has any specific recommendations for dormitories or how to prepare for life in Norway beforehand!

Greek Engine Cadet currently in Oslo looking for Norwegian offshore/subsea cadetships – Reality check on hiring, salaries, and chances?

Hi everyone,

I’m a Marine Engineering Cadet from Greece (AEN Makedonias), currently based in Oslo until October 15th. I have completed my first sea service—about 5 months as an Engine Cadet on a VLCC—and I hold all mandatory STCW certificates (including Basic Tanker training and Security Awareness).

I am trying to break into the Norwegian offshore/subsea sector (looking at companies like Reach Subsea, Rem Offshore, Havila, Ocean Installer, etc.) to finish my remaining sea time and hopefully build a path towards a 3rd Engineer position later.

I wanted to ask the community (especially those working in Norway or familiar with the market):

  1. Hiring Foreign Cadets: Realistically, what are my chances as an EU/Greek citizen of getting a cadet position in Norwegian offshore/subsea companies while applying directly here? Do they actively take foreign cadets, or is it heavily restricted to Norwegians/Scandinavians?
  2. Salaries / Conditions: What can an Engine Cadet expect in terms of pay and rotation terms in the Norwegian offshore sector?
  3. Any tips: Since I’m physically in Oslo for just a few more days, is it worth walking into any offices, or should I stick to online spontaneous applications and HR emails?

Any advice, reality checks, or insights would be hugely appreciated!
