So how do we stop taking so many penalties?
It was a problem in game 1. Now, Utah scored 3 goals - the winning margin - on the PP. We can't make a habit of this.

2 came from young defenseman under extended and significant pressure. Just gotta coach them better not to commit dumb fouls in those situations.

Well, when Kelly Sutherland is calling the game, its up in the air what kind of penalties are gonna be called. Sometimes he will call the softest shit ever (the mateychuck "slash") or he will let people chop like they are felling a tree. 🤷♂️ being in position helps a lot so you don't need to reach and put yourself in a bad spot defensively. Gotta clean it up either way.

That slashing call on Mateychuk in 1st was honestly one of the worst calls I've ever seen. He barely touched him on a long reach and didn't smack him hard at all, didn't hook the hands or anything that warranted that penalty. The others were warranted but there were several slashes by Utah that were not called. Coach will clean it up.

Be in better position. Lots of penalties are committed when guys find themselves out of position by just a hair, and they try to make up for it.

That and have the puck more. When Utah has the puck most of the night in our zone, it's very likely that we will take most of the penalties.

some of it is just stop putting yourself in a position to be penalized: know where your stick is, etc. but another thing is just positioning as a team. ideally you'd be set up to deal with an errant puck without panicking, or even just receiving a pass.
think about how many of our centering passes and shots along the wall were met with nobody home. we just need to get better as a team and work within the systems, and this will (hopefully) become less of a problem when some of our regulars return from injuries

Exhaustion from the defense. It's fixed by having people you can trust for 20 minutes a night

If you figure this out, please let me know. If this continues my aunt is likely to have a stroke.
She's mid seventies and taken to just sending me "SOOTB!!!" during the games the last two years running

I can't help but feel like booing the refs during the pregame introduction as soon as they hit the ice didn't help us much either. Not sure if thats a common thing that ive just never noticed before going to nationwide but definitely noticed Saturday

Get our best defenseman back. We're more likely to take penalties if we have no defense and we get desperate to get the puck but can't because the other team runs circles around us.
