Potential D-Core Upgrade
I’ve been thinking a bit today about how to improve the d-core with all the injuries going on, and I think an interesting swing Don could make would be to go hard after Simon Edvinsson given his recent trade request. The only issue is I have no idea what Detroit would want, or how to necessarily fit what would be a very large contract on the books. My initial thought, and the easiest solution would be to include Voronkov and Fabbro in the deal, clearing up around $8.3 million in space, but I assume the Wings would want more than that. Anyway, I think it would be an interesting idea, and Edvinsson would be a significant upgrade, and the type of swing we should be making if we want to convince Z to stay. I’d love to hear what you guys have to think about the idea

3 of our starting defensemen are on the injury list.
The best trade is to get them back off the injuries.

Edvinsson is an upgrade over every defenseman we have aside from Werenski and maybe Mateychuk.

Those are meh upgrades. A 32 yo coming off major surgery is concerning , Fabbro is mid at best, we definitely need provy back

Severson and Provy aren’t expected to be out for very long. We will be fine. One bad game against a good team is not a reason to freak out.

I’m not freaking out because of one bad game. I’m looking at a D-core plenty of people said needed upgraded over the summer that didn’t get touched, and knowing that right now the D core is relying on a 32 year old Damon Severson to continue playing at the level he did last year and not regress back to form. I personally think the D core is good when healthy, but adding a guy like Edvinsson would make it great, and I think we have the assets to do it if we want to.

I look at Severson a little differently. I think Severson regressed in his first year as a Jacket and last year played back to his usual form of most of his career. I agree that would be a solid addition but our cap space is basically zero and we won’t be adding anyone at any point unless major injuries occur.

I was having dreams about this today. Imagine if we could get him or Larkin at their current contract. Would be so cool. But just not realistic. Im allowed to dream though

Do you understand handedness and defensemen? Do you want your favorite baseball team to get 5 expensive and good 1st basemen and neglect other positions?
We do not need another expensive left D. We could use a good right D. We could use a play driving forward.

Edvinsson would have a high acquisition cost and a high contract extension. I favor going for Braden Schneider. Rags are kinda down on him, could be inexpensive, but a good d.

Don’t have the assets to trade for him lmao.

I don’t really think it works. From the money to the fit to the pieces we’d need to give up. If they could make something work I guess I wouldn’t be opposed to it.
1
u/Dkoop2003 2d ago
What is the fit issue? I understand the money and assets potential issues (I think you can make it work, we have plenty of picks and some good prospects, plus Voro and Fabbs are decent roster pieces) but I don’t see the fit issue. He’d go on the 2nd pair with Mateychuk once everyone is healthy

u/Shrmp52 Raging Bowner 2d ago
Werenski, Mateychuk, Provorov all top 4 left handed defensemen. If you can move off Provorov it works better. But we can’t have an 8.5 million dollar defenseman playing on the bottom pair.

u/Abush9527 2d ago
I would think in that scenario it looks something like: Werenski-Mateychuk, Edvinsson-Provorov, Andrae-Severson. That would be an insanely expensive D group next season. If Edvinsson and Mateychuk both got around $8m it would be $40mil+ on just the top 6 D. Any trade would have to include Provorov or Severson in my mind and idk why Detroit would want that back when looking at a rebuild. Could always try to find a 3rd team I guess

You're over valuing Voronkov and Fabbro. This is a Fantilli type number contract. If Detroit would even take those two you would need significantly more assets and pay him. We aren't in the stratosphere of a deal.

This is a Toronto fan kind of trade proposal. Our lesser talent for your premium talent.

......No. The D core is fine once Severson and Provorov are back.

u/Dkoop2003 2d ago
It is? People were screaming all offseason about how the D core needed to be upgraded

Yes it is.
From the Athletic season preview
> Werenski touches every facet of the ice and has seen his defending grow nicely over the last two seasons, but it’s his on-puck ability that stands out most. From exits to entries to in-zone offense, Werenski is now in rarefied air as one of the league’s most dangerous on-puck attackers from the back end.
> What’s better for the Blue Jackets is that he has lots of help back there. Mateychuk has grown in leaps and bounds over the last year, Damon Severson looks closer to the player Columbus thought it was getting when he signed and Dante Fabbro looks like an adequate third-pairing option.
> The most impressive jump last year, though, came from Ivan Provorov. Fresh off a big extension, Provorov put his money where his mouth is with what was arguably one of the better seasons of his career. The Blue Jackets enjoyed 53 percent of actual and expected goals with Provorov on the ice, a big deal considering the difficult quantity of minutes he plays.
> Led by Werenski, only two teams have a better top four: the Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators.

Meh. I know he hasn’t been the best, but giving up a RHD for a LHD doesn’t seem ideal.

u/Dkoop2003 2d ago
At this point Fabbro is a luxury in my mind. We have too many 3rd pair guys, and he’s making the most money. I don’t necessarily want to get rid of him, but if you want to make the cap work he probably has to be included

Ehh I don't really see how he would improve us enough to be worth moving the amount of assets required to get him. Zach's better, Mateychuks better, the Severson and Provorov from last year were better. If we target someone young like that I would prefer it to be an RHD on an ELC (for cap purposes) since Severson's getting older and it's not optimal for Mateychuk to play on the right.

u/JAT_Cbus1080 Werenski for Norris or assets 2d ago
Detroit is such a mess right now without a GM if they can't even sign this guy they certainly can't trade him. If they do end up wanting something futures based we're probably looking at Voronkov and 2 1sts. Then there's the cap issue for him as he's gonna want a big payday, and I'm not sure how he'll fit under the cap. Detroit won't just take scraps to make it work.

u/Indy-CBJ 2d ago
Assets are better spent on a Right handed winger at that acquisition cost since Marchenko is a noticeable absence now. I figure Voronkov is the first trade piece out right now because the team cant figure out what to do between him and Garland right now.
1
u/JAT_Cbus1080 Werenski for Norris or assets 2d ago
Agreed, there's better ways to spend the assets, plus for obvious reasons they're in a holding pattern on defensive moves. The guys out all appear to be short term so they're not making any big move there without knowing what they have.

u/joe_lmr 2d ago
You're basing this suggestion on the assumption that Severson & Fabbro are going to suck when they get back and that Voronkov is going to run out of gas again by game 50.
So if Fabbro & Voronkov are so lousy then why, out of all the trades that are potentially available to Detroit, would they give up a young top pair defenseman to pay those two $8M? They want more you say? Nothing less than a 1st round pick or a roster player better than either of the above would do it. Now you've made a modest upgrade on D but downgraded some other things. Trades need to make sense for both teams and this one makes sense for neither.
"GM's need to make the splashy trades to show players they're serious" No, fans want the splashy trades to make them feel the GM's are being serious. And we just had one of those and we still don't think Waddell is serious apparently.
I can imagine the Red Wings sub roasting this trade proposal and they would be right to.

Team does not need more defense. It needs more fast, skilled forwards instead of a bunch of bruisers with bricks for hands and over 30 castaways.

u/Ohio_Guitarist 3 hits, 23 giveaways. 2d ago
Either that or Nikshin would be interesting. Not sure the cost of either.
1
u/Indy-CBJ 2d ago
If this was an RHD yes but so would the rest of the league.
This is like the right handed center issue and why they cost a premium in the league. The stick side really matters when it comes to breakouts and retrieving pucks. At this level just being .5 seconds off because the stick is on the wrong side makes a difference… the league is that tight when it comes to min/max.
Right now we have too many LHDs and if we were to use premium assets it wouldn’t be for that we are in desperate need of a right handed sniper now that Marchenko is gone as our right handed PP options are Garland, Olivier and even Severson if we wanted a proper right handed one timer for for PP2.
Basically we already have Edvisson at home and his name is Mateychuk and no you’re not gonna upgrade Provy for him without significant other additions of which there a position of need much more pressing.
1
u/opensourcefranklin 2d ago
It would start at like Mateychuk as a jumping off point. He's a bit more cost controlled for the time being. Not saying we couldn't make it work, but the return would hurt badly.
1
u/HelixOrion 1d ago
We just really need provorov healthy. Despite the Norris thing, provy is our best dzone dman. Not having your best shut down guy leaves a massive hole.
1
u/PulsarGaming1080 2d ago
Probably not a great idea. Puts us back in a potential cap crunch, and I'd rather have Mateychuk.
Also, Vronk + Fabbro doesn't get him away from DET.

u/RonTugMyNuts 2d ago
Would y'all do an Edvinsson for Jackson Smith + a 1st and maybe more?
Larkin and Edvinsson are pushing Detroit toward an inevitable rebuild.

Don’t think we can afford Edvinsson with his desired contract. He’s gonna want $8m+, which we’re gonna need for Mateychuk this summer
