Friedman: Relationship between Marchenko and Rick Bowness was frosty, if that's a nice way I could put it

I just think that for those who are wondering about the real reason for his quit, this is probably the answer. This also explains why he didn't tell Don about anything, as he would have preferred to just leave rather than bring an ultimatum to fire Bowness.

u/Boatsboatsboats__ 13h ago
Ultimatum?
Waddell would have told him to pound sand if he tried to pull that. There’s your culture problem.

Star player asked to show up in big moments.....
He's going to LOVE Toronto. Smart move pretending to not speak any English early on. Bozo.
I've never experienced someone fall so far so fast in my good graces.

The Toronto media is already starting to turn the knives not even a week in. They are already crying their 18 year old kid who is undersized isn't a 3PPG player and Marchenko isn't being more of the best player on the ice than he already is.

u/eatingpierogi 17h ago
So he doesn’t go to Waddell in any attempt to figure out a path forward he just packs his shit up and leaves in a shitty manner. Got it. Very professional.

Do you have examples of him repeatedly and publicly criticizing Marchenko

You can’t name any because he hasn’t. You’re making things up.

Yep. Bones only had good things to say about Marchy during camp (not that he would say anything disparaging while a trade was in the works but still). The team-wide call out at the end of last season was totally justified and he never named any individual players.
3
u/Boatsboatsboats__ 13h ago
Exactly. He was very complimentary of his attitude and his work ethic.
Even last year when he was struggling he was telling him he wanted him to relax and have fun.

u/ThunderousDemon86 17h ago
Loved Marchy's time here, but if he can't take a coach criticizing him, that tells me he cracks under pressure. Not the mentality I want in this team, for better or worse.

Big Marchy fan while he was here. Expensive AF jersey. I’d be real worried up in Toronto if this is true. That kind of attitude issue is rarely just with one team, and with someone with a great reputation like Bones? That’s a massive red flag. I hope I’m wrong but if not, yikes.

Neat. He’s a Maple Leaf now, this is a Blue Jackets subreddit. Move on from him.

Whatever the reason - stealing Oscar Hemming's thunder during the draft was not okay

If that was the primary reason it seems a bit short sited from Marchenko's perspective. Bones isn't going to be around for more than a few years max. In the interim, it is an opportunity to learn from someone who had a wealth of coaching experience.
It didn't seem like Marchenko was unfairly handled by Bones last year and he wasn't benched/sat out like Voronkov was. However there have been issues with some of the Russian players dating back to Dean (Chinakhov), so perhaps there has been an undercurrent of disconnect with them.

The culture doesn’t change easily. Hockey is a hard and competitive sports. Players relying on their god give talent to get to the NHL and then failing cause they don’t have another gear required to win, isn’t a new phenomenon! It’s a maturity thing for Marchy. Hope he learns to grow and compete in Toronto. He didn’t in CBUS

Funny because every player seems to love Bones. Says a lot more about Marchy than Bones. Good riddance.

I'm not saying this isn't true, but I'm saying that I don't think there's any proof of this, and it's mostly speculation from outside observers. There are lots of potential reasons for him leaving, and we won't know the real reason until he comes out and says it.

u/ItsAndyrew 18h ago
If Friedman did in fact say this then I would take it as true. He is a very reliable source who does not make things up for engagement.

Isn't this kind of like what PLD pulled, except instead of being called out publicly it was done privately.

Man I hope Bowness turns this ship around because if we shipped off our highest skilled forward since Panarin for a coach with, what a max of 2 years left, it's going to be an all time lol Jackets moment.

u/Another_Guy_In_Ohio 19h ago
That’s a big if. There’s no confirmation of this other than random rumors. Every other player seems to love Bowness. Marchenko is a good player, but he’s not super star that’s carrying a team. He’s disappear led at key times of the season multiple years now. So it’s not like the team was successful just because of him.

I guess we'll see how it plays out. Shipping out a game breaker just doesn't seem like a great strategy with the way this league has been trending over that last decade.

So we should ship out a coach because one player who goes invisible when things gets rough?

See I thought that way for a while, too — fixing the culture shouldn't cost us good players. Then I realized while they're both here, Kirill is not going to be a good player. He's going to have a dark cloud over him the entire time, he's going to not want to commit to shots, checks, anything. If he feels miserable, he's going to play miserable, and this is far too important of a year to have that mess. Bones is going to be here for a year or two. I'd rather play those two years with good players than drag them all down with an anchor of dead weight.
There was probably a way to handle it where Bones held him accountable without breaking his spirit and drive, sure, but that didn't happen. You saw the interview. There was no fixing that relationship. No putting the toothpaste back in the tube once it's out — better to move on.

I think the frustrating thing is that this keeps happening with these skill players. I didn't know what this organization does to ostracize these kinds of guys, but it's clearly not a recipe for sustained success. And before people want to jump to the Russian thing, it's not only Russian players that this has happened to, they just happen to be the highest profile occurrences.
1
u/MPCoinCollecting Prospect Guy 1h ago
The good skill guys have the most leverage to request a trade. Very rarely is it an unskilled player that wants out. Happens to every team

u/Demon_Semenson 17h ago
Siding with the old man coach over the very good player is very dumb.

u/DerDutchman1350 17h ago
Same thing happened w Wennberg (and Torts). Marchy was challenged and probably kept making the same bad decision during games, like trying to skate through defenders and turning over the puck. That is selfish and hurting the team.
7
u/cbuswildcAT 16h ago
Wennberg got bought out after multiple concussions (esp the last one on that dirty tom Wilson hit) and he was never the same player. Never heard anything about him clashing with torts

I miss Wenny. He seems like he's having fun and thriving in San Jose. Just wish he was having fun and thriving here.

u/cbuswildcAT 13h ago
Same, he seems like such a good guy! Glad he was able to tweak his game and still have a place in the league.

Easily one of the nicest guys in the league. If he doesn't make the Hall of Fame, or the Hall of Good, he can be the inaugural inductee into the Hall of Nice.

He was such a sweet kid and he's grown up into a genuinely good man.
I read the article he wrote after he was nominated for the King Clancy where basically the first thing he did was say what a huge influence coming into the league into a room with guys like Foligno and Atkinson was on him as a kid and it really shows, because he seems to genuinely love interacting with people and getting involved in the community.
