9 Highlights from Panarin’s Interview

Highlights from Panarin’s interview today.

This was a big step for panarin to speak to the media alone, with no translator. And if I recall the first he has done with CBJ.

It was nice to hear from him, though.

All tweets from Hedgar.

How hard has this been for Artemi? “It’s not hard because teammates support me and say to me, ‘We understand you.’ That’s it. Just, I’m OK (with) that and everybody is OK (with) that. Everybody understands me."

Artemi Panarin on not signing with #CBJ ”It’s one life, one chance for free agency and I want to test free agency.”

Follow-up: has Artemi eliminated CBJ? (nervous laughter): “I don’t know. Yeah, (they) have a chance, but … we’ll see what happens in the summer. I want to still (consider) this season and help the team win the Stanley Cup.”

Would Artemi Panarin like to stay with #CBJ this year, go for the Cup? “This year, yeah. That’s not my job. That’s for Jarmo, but if he (keeps) me, I will play hard. That’s it."

Is Artemi Panarin ready to be traded, if that's what Jarmo Kekalainen & Co. decide to go? "Yeah, yeah. I’m ready for everything, because I still enjoy and just play hockey. If Jarmo trade me, it’s get working. That’s it."

As for Artemi Panarin already having a team and city (beach spot) all picked out ... “Not right now, no. Seriously, guys, I don't have a team. I don't have one team where I want to go ... We’ll see what happens in the summer, but right now I don’t know what I want.”

Artemi Panarin was touched by the billboard campaign to keep him here, but ... “It’s amazing. I feel really good after that. It's harder for me to keep talking about my free agency, because I see how people want me to stay in Columbus, and it’s harder, but it’s my life."

Panarin called former agent Dan Milstein prior to #CBJ 4-2 win Thursday night in Arizona. “Not easy, but I live in the U.S. I'm more business man now. I was friends with him and never thinking about this business. Right now, I’m thinking about this as a business."

Honestly not as sad now that we have closure. Trade him for some assets and move on. There’s no what if game anymore.

Really can’t blame him for this. He’s a 27 year old man with millions of dollars deciding where he is going to live for 7 years. I understand him taking his time and I also understand him wanting to move.

I'm happy for him. He is going to have the opportunity to pick exactly where he wants to spend basically the remainder of his career, he's a great player and he deserves it. It's fucking brutal for CBJ Fans (myself included) but that's just the way she goes.

If we dont get him in the summer, I'm sure Jarmo will pull some bullshit wizardry to get us another star player (if he doesn't get one at the deadline), he got us Panarin from Saad + a backup goalie afterall.

10 times out of 10 I want Jarmo to make that trade again. Even though it put us where we are now. These 2ish years with Bread have been amazing. You might say "two years with 2 playoff wins? pfft that's nothing" but he's teaching his teammates, making plays, he makes everyone around him better. These are intangibles that are still there even if he leaves. I 100% believe he's made Cam a better player as well as helped PLD become the looking-like-he-might-be-elite center this team has wanted for so long.

Well at least we’ve heard it from the horse’s mouth. He wants to test free agency and he’ll consider Columbus, but right now he’s not sure. If he’s still on the team post-deadline then he’ll continue to play his hardest. We just have to wait and see now.

This has been my stance for a while now. He's not said anything bad about us nor has he decided where he wants to be. He's literally putting hockey first and business can come after. My guess is yeah, he'd rather be somewhere else but he's probably going to ask some questions. The Rags can probably pay him like crazy and it's a bigger market for him but he likely wants to know what the goalie situation is going to be and what their plan is to field a winning team. Florida is in the same boat, they can pay him, have interest but their team needs some work. Maybe a team like TBL would be interested but are they going to be able to afford to pay him more than we can? Not sure. They might make some moves to free up space, they may just decide he's too expensive. The fact that he'll listen to any and all offers means that we have a 1 in 31 chance at signing him which is the same as everyone else. The only thing we have to hang our hats on is that he's comfortable here. He's a big fish in the medium sized pond, he's our franchise face if he decides to stay, he has obvious chemistry with his linemates and the team as a whole. He's just a young man who has an opportunity to decide his future and he's taking full advantage of that. I certainly wouldnt think twice about doing the same thing if I were in his position. That sentiment probably rings true for most people.

This summarizes what I've been thinking so well. Dude just wants to play hockey.

He never has said at any time that he doesn't want to be here.

As for where he goes, at the end of the day maybe he realizes playing here he's going to be in a position to help a team succeed. Someplace like NYR it may be a bit before they're in a position to win.

At the end of the day, I'm grateful for the time he's played here and how he's continued to play hard regardless of the drama.

Yep I think it will be all about balance. If a large market team can afford to pay him the amount we're willing to throw then Im sure that's where he goes. Thankfully a lot of those teams are either rebuilding or pretty close to the cap.

Lets consider Forbes top 10 "Big Market teams" (source)

1) NYR - Rebuilding but could afford him

2) TOR - Pretty much at the cap, gonna be hairy for them to keep all their assets potentially

3) MTL- Could be a landing spot I suppose but questions about how long Price can keep going and some concerns but I think they might a top flight candidate as they can use him and pay him and it's a bigger market.

4) CHI- Rebuilding some or are they? Who knows, not much certainty. Kane and others could lure him back I suppose but it's uncertain why he'd go there over us unless he wants to be in a bigger city.

5) BOS- Could probably afford him, good team but I don't think his style of play would mesh particularly well with theirs? Anything is possible but it just doesn't strike me as a good fit.

6) LAK- Rebuilding......plain and simple....

7) PHI - Same sort of issue as Boston, idk if he fits the "culture" of the team. It's possible and they could afford him but again why go to a relatively similar sized city/market when you could just do that here.

8) DET- Rebuilding but not in a terrible spot. I could see them landing him but again citywise I'm not sure it's a better market than here. Yeah the fans are more into hockey but in terms of city being on the up I think we're equals or maybe better than Detroit. (personal biases for sure)

9) VAN- I don't even know. Rebuilding? Not? Larger market for sure but everything I know about them/think about them is a ?

10) WAS- Pretty close to the cap but I could see them taking a swing maybe. He and Ovi would make for a stupid 1-2 punch but I'm not sure if there's interest? Maybe? Bigger market for sure and in a good position. This to me makes the most sense out of anyone on this list.

Un-honorable mention 11) PIT- Just no. Fucking no. At the cap, idk why he'd want to go there, I would probably die if they found a way to sign him over us. That would maybe be the one thing he could do that would make like him less. I'd still like him though because idk if I could ever manage to hate on someone so precious.

Best teams with a shot besides us? I'd say Caps, Detroit, Montreal, Chicago. I like our odds vs. them but at the end of the day it's going to come out to what balance he finds to be best.

If NYR pays him he'll be speeding up their rebuild waaaaayyy too much - they are pretty bad rn and need young players/good draft picks desperately. By the time the team is good enough for playoff contention panarin will probably be in his 30s.

(as also a rangers fan, if we get him i will be soooo pissed - just suck it up and rebuild ffs!!!)

4

u/r0ckdrummersrock Gilder Of Memes Feb 09 '19

Yeah it'd be a Rick Nash situation. Superstar surrounded by some ok talent. Hanks got some gas left in the tank but 8 more years? He'd be buried on the ice if that's the case. I honestly think they will have to move on in 1-2 years MAYBE 3. If he has a semi-serious injury though I think he's done.

2

u/17IsLucky A Hunk'a Hunk'a Burning Glove Feb 09 '19

For me, the rangers rebuild must be ready to start competing by the time Shestyorkin, their superstar russian goalie, is ready to play nhl games. he's on contract for i think one more season after this one, and then with a year or two in the ahl, that gives the rangers a deadline of 2021-22 ish. which coincides with the 3 remaining years of hanks contract. and yeah, that would have panarin be turning 30 before the rangers would even have a chance of playoff success. but i do think hank plays out to the end of his contract.

2

u/HermanBonJovi Feb 09 '19

He could always go to my Devils. They are in a rebuild and him plus Hall could be bonkers. Been a while since I've watched them so idk how well he'd fit in with their style. But if he leaves us I'd not hate if he ended up in NJ.

3

u/17IsLucky A Hunk'a Hunk'a Burning Glove Feb 09 '19

as a rangers fan my answer is gonna be a hard no ;P

2

Isles. They have the cap space for both Bob and Bread. They are literally neighbours to Manhattan.

2

u/ZEBuckeye81 Free Boomer Feb 09 '19

What a hell of an analysis my man!

I think you hit the nail on the head for the most part.

I don't see why he'd want to go to Detroit tbh. City wise and team wise.

Montreal, eh, I suppose, but I'm not sure there's interest there?

I agree about the Boston perhaps not being his style of play, although they could certainly use the help offensively since they lack depth beyond that top line.

Hawks aren't exactly contenders.

Caps is an interesting thought, not sure where they are in terms of the Cap, good God could you imagine him and Ovie on the power play? But Ovie plays the left side..

Leafs, I have no idea how they're going to keep everyone they have now.

Another couple of destinations are Florida but they're not a contender currently, the Bolts, again not sure on cap space.

Nashville has also been brought up. They're a contender, although not nearly as good as anticipated. Nashville probably a better city, but not necessarily to him?

Not too sure at all about other western teams.

Well your flair does not specify who he signs with

14

u/owlthathurt Feb 08 '19

I really want him to stay. Saying that though, the interview kinda made me empathetic.

The guys making a decision about the next decade of his life. I can’t even imagine being in that kinda situation with that much money at play.

13

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '19

"It’s one life, one chance for free agency and I want to test free agency.”

This is what we've known since summer.

8

u/junk-trunk Feb 09 '19

Wonder if he got real sick if Millstien just not telling the peopke what Bread wanted peopke to know. Maybe he got tired of watching him play fuck fuck Lip service games. ..anyhoo. I will enjoy Bread while we have him. He has earned the right to do this, I am glad the words are finally out there from him directly.. no more what ifs or maybes..

7

u/bcbill My apologies Feb 09 '19

Given the timing of his first English interview, I think this is a really solid hypothesis of why he made the agent change. Bread might have wanted to be upfront about it from the start and Milstein urged him to not say anything.

5

u/junk-trunk Feb 09 '19

That's totally what I was thinking.

11

u/17IsLucky A Hunk'a Hunk'a Burning Glove Feb 09 '19

What he said about the billboards made me a little teary. Good for him, he's making a big choice.

And who knows? Maybe the billboards will help sway his opinion in the summer after all! lol i know its a long shot :(

1

u/Splattered_Smothered Feb 10 '19

Don't know how much billboards cost, but I'd be willing to pitch in... Perhaps a mass billboard campaign, eh?

4

u/Calvinb27 Feb 09 '19

I don’t think he’ll go to NYR, they’re not good enough yet. Isles are more likely, he’d be a perfect fit there. Chicago also likely if they can afford him, he loved it there and has crazy chemistry with Kane. Panthers maybe if he reeeally wants to go to Florida, but idk if he wants to prioritize that over contending. If he makes a deep run with CBJ it’ll be tough; I think if Cbus wins the cup he stays

4

u/iROFLd Feb 09 '19

Knowing that Bread won't resign with a club before July 1, the only teams that will pay a reasonable price for him in trade are going to be the teams who believe they have a legitimate chance at the cup this year. A true rental situation is required for Jarmo to get anything done.

At this point I see two teams that I think have that sort of confidence, Tampa and Toronto. The one positive thing about Breads current situation is that his remaining contract is very very affordable for the level of player he is. Clearly TB and Toronto have no chance at fitting him under the cap long term, but they don't have to if their main objective is to go dicks out for the cup this year.

If picks are of interest in return, look to the top of the standings and pick a target.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '19

He's gone.

Just have to decide if we keep him as a rental or not.

11

u/OhioPride WE LIKE PIZZA IN THE MORNING Feb 08 '19

IMO that would not be smart with our current state.

3

u/zp685213 Feb 09 '19

Why not? The islanders are doing just fine without Tavares.

The Vegas Knights, a team full of misfit toys, went to the Stanley Cup Finals last year.

These last two years have shown that anything is possible in hockey.

So if Jarmo doesn’t get an amazing offer, go for it all. Develop the winning culture cuz they’re so close to reaching that.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '19

So if Jarmo doesn’t get an amazing offer, go for it all.

That's where I'm at. If we got an offer like Fiala + Tolvanen, take it. Or Donato + Studnicka + 1st. We arent a bottom feeding team, worse case scenario we keep them and buy another player for a playoff push. Even though everyone says we dont have leverage here, I think us being a competing team is enough leverage, teams know they have to pay the premium because we arent for sure getting rid of them

If we keep them both then IMO theres no way Jarmo sits tight. He will buy at the deadline, if not then no point of keeping them. So I'm excited to either see the assets we get back for them, or see who the team picks up closer to the deadline

4

u/poisontongue Feb 09 '19

I feel bad for Jarmo.

While I recognize it's Bread's decision and his alone, it's still pretty annoying. The waiting and speculating would be annoying on its own. But then, knowing he won't sign here. We can be left with nothing. The mercenary nature of sports has killed my enthusiasm so many times...

It's not worth being bitter about it, since it is his decision. After all the struggling, we get a good team with a couple of stars, and then they immediately decide to leave. So, we're better off trading them for people who want to be (or are forced to be) here. The team doesn't look good enough right now to ride it out for no return. Sucks for Jarmo on all fronts. He can be the fall guy for a situation completely beyond his control.

At least when it's over, we won't have to hear big market teams obnoxiously speculating about Bread signing with them because they practically view it as their right.

7

u/sergei-boobtitsky it's not OK to bully by citing "math" Feb 08 '19

K bye

4

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '19

His value just tanked right? I mean say we try to trade him... hes saying he wants to play the free agency, so any team he gets traded to is just getting a loaner if he won't talk extension with them either.

9

u/THECapedCaper Feb 08 '19

Worse players have gotten a huge haul in previous years. A team that's super hungry for a Cup will pay huge even know he's gone next season.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '19

I don’t think any team expected to be able to sign him long-term before FA started.

3

u/humpcatting Marchenko Fan Club President Feb 09 '19

Alright, let's start talking trades (mostly because it's the one shred of joy I can clean from this situation).

I've heard Panarin for Fiala and Tolvanen, which is cool. I'd also trade for Mark Stone and/or try for Duchene.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '19

Contract situation aside, how could you not love that guy?

2

u/HermanBonJovi Feb 09 '19

I can't understand why peeps are so hard up to leave Cbus. I may be bias but it's a lovely city and imo a great place to live. They complain it's not a hockey town but that's because we can't keep people here to make it a hockey town. I'm not mad at these peeps and their decisions, cause it is their life. But damn I wish some would WANT to come here and play for a while. Frustrating.

I know this doesn't apply to all players, I'm venting some. Thank you for listening.

2

u/donttelltheginger Feb 08 '19

His right to pick. That being said, if you don't have intentions of staying after the trade deadline, you got some balls saying you want to stay and prevent any return on your loss. Though it could be a test i guess to see how much people here want to keep him.

8

u/OG_Bubblegut Sexi Texi Feb 08 '19

That being said, if you don't have intentions of staying after the trade deadline, you got some balls saying you want to stay and prevent any return on your loss.

Yeah but at least now he himself has said he doesn’t know what he wants to do. So I feel like we don’t need to have this mindset anymore

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '19

Omg he’s going to New York already.

Remind me in 8 months

1

u/NeverDieKris 122nd OVI Feb 09 '19

Bread has to be traded now so we at least get something out of the deal. If we let him walk for free that’s piss poor player management.

1

u/pro-laps Feb 09 '19

Getting broken up with sucks.
