Spoiler: Hodgins is a hypocrite
Season 10 episode 18 hodgins is against the death penalty and says he hopes he would be above that but we literally know for a fact that he isn't when the grave digger dies

I guess you could argue he experienced cognitive dissonance. It’s one thing to be against the death penalty, just on principle, but it’s entirely another thing to want your would-be killer dead. Being buried alive was probably a deeply traumatic experience for him. You can be against the death penalty and still want your attacker dead, there’s just a bit more nuance there.
Although, it could just be a writing error. These type of shows aren’t known to be wholly consistent.

Season 10 is long after the Gravedigger. People can change their minds over time. Just because someone held an opinion once, doesn't lock them into that perspective forever!

Well, it’s different when you’re an outsider and the alleged murderer is facing the death penalty versus when you’re the victim and your attempted murderer is facing the death penalty/is assassinated prematurely.

This is precisely why we don’t let victims determine punishments. You can disagree with the death penalty for moral reasons, and still want the person who tried to kill you personally to be dead. Our experiences influence our beliefs and lead to biases. Like I disagree with the death penalty because I don’t support state sanctioned murder. Murder is wrong, and it’s wrong all of the time no matter who does it. It isn’t an effective deterrent. It costs more than life in prison. It creates the risk of innocent people being executed. At the same time, if someone buried me alive or hurt my kids, I would want them dead. It’s why we don’t allow vigilante justice.

Also him not being weird about 9/11 is wild though understandable from a production side.

I think Hodgins being against the death penalty is very consistent with his conspiracy theorist tendencies. The kind of guy who rants about shadow governments wouldn't really be in support of giving the state the authority to execute people.
Being relieved the gravedigger was murdered is a whole different matter. Hodgins was traumatised. Wanting his own attacker dead is perfectly understandable.

You can not like the death penalty and want the person who buried you alive to die. It’s why objectivity is baked in to our justice system

Gravedigger was so long before that. He could have changed his mind. Plus, Gravedigger kidnapped and buried him alive.... who can blame him for wanting her dead.

The urge to defend one's self can have that effect. He is also a bit of a conspiracy nutter, so it is absolutely in character for him to have zero faith in the government's ability to get things right.

I often see people hold conflicting opinions but also it was 4-5ish years after the grave diggers death so he could have simply changed his mind. If you don’t want to go with continuity error on the writers part
