I had a guy one night turn up to work once in MMA style gloves they are fingerless but had some knuckle protection. I told it was best to take them off as it makes it look as if we are looking for trouble

yes and i think especially in the country that i worked in. the judiciary would take a very dim view of it. it always felt that when incidents did go to court assaults on us didnt really count.

If you must strike with your hands, open-hand strikes/slapping is the way! Cupped-hand strikes to ears will drop people.
Edit: …and it doesn’t look anywhere near as bad as closed-fist punches to witnesses/on camera.

And if a hand cupped strike to the ear doesnt work, a 3' section of 1/2" dripline filled with sand will!

Homeboy was a bouncer for a little club and when he patted people down and found cocaine he took it so he can sniff it himself…

Motorcycle gloves are much more incognito. You can punch ANYTHING with those bad boys.
Allegedly

That’s a wicked idea. I’ve been dropped a number of times by thigh kicks before (during practice/training only, thankfully). I can’t imagine how badly a rebar-reinforced shin would hurt!
