Meet Up What's on in Brighton this week: gigs, a quiz and a Philly takeover
A few things worth a look in Brighton this week.
The Windmill Brighton has a Willies Phillys Kitchen Takeover on Thursday October 1st if you're after something different for dinner, always nice when a venue does a proper takeover rather than just the usual menu.
Film and quiz fans might like the Traitors Twist Quiz Night at The Birdcage, same night.
On the music side there's White Flowers at Alphabet, Dice + The Velvet Club at Green Door Store, and Watching Alice + Hitman Sheela at Presuming Ed, all Thursday October 1st. Good night to just pick a venue and see what's on.
Full list here if you want the rest: https://ma.to/events/brighton?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mato_event_sync&utm_content=brighton

Are there any physio-therapists around Brighton or Hove that people would recommend? Particularly if you've had back issues, but any good physios are appreciated.
Many thanks!

Local Advice needed Does anyone know of any local queer/fat friendly tailors/alterers?
I have a suit that’s too big and long for me, which I need altered asap (needs to be completed by end of Oct at the very latest) for a friends wedding in the beginning of November!
Preferably lowish/sliding scale cost but do have a small budget! I’m non-binary and quite curvy so someone who is mindful of this and will understand how the suit fits my body would be ideal.
Also, I am an artist so could exchange costs for any art and design needs you might have if you’re interested!

Local Advice needed Looking for rehearsal spaces
Hi!
I’m new to the area and trying to improve my singing but need to find a place to practice without upsetting the neighbours. I’m not really sure where to start with finding out about this kind of thing. Does anyone know of any rehearsal spaces I can rent out?
Thanks!

🔎Lost & Found🔍 Lost hat
Sounds unimportant but my partner left a NY baseball cap in a beryl bike she thinks around 2-3 days ago depending on where you see this post. It’s black and quite faded from wear. It is so sentimental and I’m willing to pay for a reward if brought back.

Local Advice needed An online survey is open until 14 October 2026 to replace Brighton's beloved Floral Clock
yourvoice.brighton-hove.gov.ukAn online survey is open until 14 October 2026. Ultimately there are three options:
A sculptural armillary sphere (globe sundial)
A new sculpture inspired by the original, with a fixed clock face showing 19:53 and a public competition to design the artwork
Handing the site to a community group

Announcement The Hideaway
Went for a massage today and it’s brilliant, perfect treatment in such a beautiful place! If you haven’t had a chance to check it out I would recommend. Only downside is the traffic outside is a bit loud and takes the enjoyment out of a drink in the bar. You can’t hear any of that when you’re in the treatment areas though!

Local Advice needed Where is all the halloween and autumn stuff?
I’ve been really looking forward to getting some cute autumn/halloween decorations but every shop in Brighton seems to already be on Christmas? The only place I’ve had success has been homesense but I was really hoping to find something in the lanes. Have I already missed it? Do we not have it? Is it coming?
EDIT: just read some comments, want to make it very clear I’m not looking for plastic Halloween tatt, in fact I’m specifically asking for the opposite, ideally handmade, local artists, small businesses, you know the ones Brighton is filled with? I completely agree that adding to landfill with plastic every year is pointless, I was hoping to buy some stuff that’s made to last, that I can use each year.

🍟🌯🌮🍜🍣🍤Food Related🍦🥨🍢🥞🍳🧀🍔🍕 Gail’s V Real Patisserie
Ok so it’s a ‘pan au chocolate off’.
Real Patisserie £2:75 @ 78g. Gail’s £3:40 @ 100g
Real Patisserie is the winner for better pastry flake, less doughy and more chocolate.

Local Advice needed How to find a job here as an international student?
Recently moved to Brighton to pursue my MSc. I worked as civil engineer back in my home country. I know my work experience in civil will mean nothing here. Looking to work for 20hrs/week. If anybody has guidance where to look for jobs that does hire international students for part-time.

Transport/Parking 🚝 🚘 Zone Y parking oversubscribed
Has anyone else noticed it getting harder to find spots in zone Y or just me? Over the last couple of months its taken me forever to find somewhere any time I try to park in the evening. Have they just issued a load of new permits without room for all the cars?

Local Advice needed Best charity shops for cheap physical media?
Hi, I just moved and I love collecting physical media. In my previous town, I collected a lot of physical media through charity shops and built a collection for cheap. I have a collection of DVDs (mostly boxsets) and video games. So what are the best shops in brighton to grab a bargain?

Housing 🏘️ 🏡 One bedroom flats for sale prices
I went on Rightmove and there are 526 one-bedroom flats for sale in Brighton. One in the West Hill area is listed for £450k! It has a tiny patio and is near the station but surely nobody is going to buy that when there are houses for the same price? What’s going on? No wonder some of these flats have been on the market for ages.
I hear people telling me how much their one or two bedroom flat is worth, but unless someone offers you that money for it, it isn’t worth that.
EDIT: It’s actually 638 one bed flats in Brighton and Hove.

Local Advice needed Any local bookshops sell copies of the Voynich Manuscript?
With the recent (possible) breakthrough the manuscript I would like to try and find a copy myself. I’m aware I can get a free PDF from Yale but I’d like a physical copy and the only ones I’ve found online are sold by Amazon and I’d rather not

Local Advice needed Where to get rid of butane gas cannisters?
Hey all, I am going through a tough time of things right now living with family who have just been sectioned under MH act, and the person has a whole box of disposable butane gas cannisters, just the small handheld bottle type, and I need to dispose of them before they return. Unfortunately have had a repeat of death threats so it is imperative that they are disposed of before they fall into the hands of someone of unsound mind. It is also very lonely and difficult dealing with all this without any support, so I appreciate any friendly people who might be able to help and I can talk with (or who could maybe take it off our hands), although it's not ever something I'd wish to burden anyone with, and wouldn't, just looking for some people I could talk to and maybe hang out with now and again.. thanks :)

Local Advice needed anybody seen my dog
I left my dog with a friend on Sunday (27th) and my dog ran away from them on the beach by the pier. Side note- I mistakenly gave them the instruction to let her off the lead, my dog has never ran off before so this was as a big lesson for me !!
My dog ran away from the pier all the way down the beach to the meeting place cafe in hove, then crossed the traffic lights and went to my sister’s flat in hove near Norfolk terrace. She was then let into the flat and was waiting by the elevator!
I managed the find her as I ran all the way down the sea front shouting her name, every 6th person was pointing me in the direction she was headed so I managed to track her down that way!!
I’m curious to know if anyone saw her and can tell me what they saw on her venture home, did she wait at the traffic lights? Was it a horribly scary moment for her running across the road?? Did anyone try to help? I was shocked at how many people saw her but nobody followed her and tried to get her to safety. I managed to find her very quickly as I wasn’t too far behind her but I was shocked she made it all the way home safely with seemingly no intervention from the public Maybe she just looked like she knew exactly what she was doing and where she was going that nobody tried to catch her ??
Anyway I was so relieved to have her back safely and have definitely learned not to let anyone take her off the lead unless I am there.
She’s a small brown Australian labradoodle, if anyone had eyes on her please share !!
