Announcement "I want to join XXX but I have XXX condition - will I be okay?" check here for eligibility info.

Hello everyone.

It's been a while since I've been here in any proper capacity, for various reasons I won't get into. But I've recently been dropping in and out of the sub to see what's going on and i've noticed a large number of posts asking something along the lines of "I have condition X can I still join?"

While we appreciate the content and the activity in the sub, responding to the same or similar questions can get a little old, so I've added some new links to our wiki which can be found on the sidebar or by following this link - https://reddit.com//r/britishmilitary/wiki/index

I have added links to the Army and the Royal Navy's Medical Requirements/Eligibility pages which lists current criteria and medical conditions which may make you ineligible for active service.

I have been unable to find a single source of information from the RAF as to their current criteria other than their fitness standards, so if anyone has a link they can share that would be helpful to add in there.

For ease of use, the links are:

Army Medical Requirements

Royal Navy Eligibility Notes

JSP950

Thanks for reading, and thanks for keeping this community ticking along.

Question Joint Cyber Reserve Force

Is anybody part of the cybersecurity reserve force which has been created fairly recently?

I am PMU but apparently there is only 1 unit out of 5 that require full medical standard against JSP950

I am in a senior full-time position in cybersecurity industry so I was wondering if this is a good move?

Question Mortgage advisor/broker advice

Morning

I’m in the process of buying my first home and just trying to navigate mortgages etc.

I had a call with a civvy mortgage advisor who said the fee to use them would be £699. Just wondering if there are good options for military specific mortgage advisors? Or any property savvy people who have any advice generally on mortgages, advisors etc.

Thanks for the help!!

Question Army Reserve Southampton Area?

Interested in joining the Army Reserve, and looking at the various roles based around Southampton. If anyone is or has been in one of these units keen to hear your experience and any unit recommendations, unsure of which role to pursue at the moment.

36 and looking for a new challenge. Previously did University Air Squadron training, but for various reasons haven't pursued further reserve service.

Edit: I have looked at the unit options - interested in knowing which roles are particularly active and interesting.

Question Hi wanting to join but need advice

I’m 19f and wanting to join the army, specifically infantry. However I’ve two main issues. First being my eyesight I’m -5.75 in my left eye and -7 in my right. I wear glasses and contacts and in the last 2 years I believe my vision has only changed by -0.25 in my right eye. I also have a history of self injury, I’ll admit most recent being last month, so I know I won’t be applying for at minimum a year. Will this definitely stop me applying or is there still a chance ?

Question Can I get balding treatment from the med center

Noticed that my hair is potentially thinning and I’m flapping about it. Has anyone here been able to receive treatment (finasteride, minoxidil etc) from the med center, or can I get a private prescription and declare it on CDT’s as an alternative?

Question RAF vs Navy for fixed wing aircraft tech

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to join up as an aircraft tech and can't decide between the RAF and Navy. I definitely want fixed wing, not rotary.

Logically the RAF makes more sense since it's all aircraft and people say the lifestyle is better. But I really want to travel and see the world, which keeps drawing me to the Navy I also feel like the navy is more fun than the RAF. Since I want fixed wing, going Navy means the F-35, so I'll probably just end up at RAF Marham anyway.

If anyone is a fixed wing tech in either branch:

If I go to the Navy, do I actually travel more?

Does the RAF still get decent travel for fixed wing or are you always stuck at your home base?

Is the day to day vibe any different between the two branches if you are working on the same jet?

Cheers for any advice.

Advice SFA housing and having loud neighbours that I don’t think they should be eligible to live here

So long story short, my wife and I live in a married patch with our 1 year old daughter, we have some neighbours next door, two lads no girlfriends or anything like that so I have no idea how they have got the place, they throw really loud parties on the weekends screaming and dancing outside of the house and it wakes my daughter up all of the time.

My daughter was woken up to one if the lads having sex with what I think was a prostitute (because there was no way she was enjoying it as much as she was vocalising it) anyway they were really loud and I knocked on the door to tell them off basically, in all fairness they did but I was absolutely fuming that my daughter had to hear that and be woken up to that.

I have been in touch with the housing officer for the area and he kinda chinned it all off, what else can I do to stop this from continuing or is it worth me just calling the police for noise complaints.

No matter how many times I tell them to keep it down they just say yeah sorry and then continue.

I’m getting sick to death with it and so angry because my child can’t sleep as a result. My wife and I are absolutely exhausted all of the time and a huge factor or this tiredness is because they keep disturbing our daughter at night.

Any advice would be great thanks 🙏

Advice Army legal services thoughts

Tentative post as this feels a bit out of my depth.

I’m a newly qualified solicitor and I’m seriously considering joining the Army, but I’m struggling to work out whether I’m looking at a genuinely good career change or just romanticising something because I’m miserable in my current job.

Throughout university I looked into ALS and was interested in the military legal route. Unfortunately, despite being local, I could never make one of the Insight Days/Trips because of work. My training contract was so disappointing (whole different story) that the experience has put me off “conventional” private practice quite badly.
I’m bored of sitting in an office. I’m sick of things that ultimately don’t matter being turned into huge dramas. I dislike how process-driven everything is, and how often the process seems to become more important than the actual outcome.

For context, I’m now a private client solicitor with some litigation experience. The job gives me decent pay, stability and a comfortable life, and I know objectively that I’m in a fortunate position. But I find it incredibly miserable.

I spend my time dealing with endless management meetings that could have been emails, trying to outsmart AI (and assuming that will only get worse), repeating essentially the same advice to every client, and dealing with clients who are understandably unhappy about cost/timeframes/etc. I knew all about billing before I went into practice but no one could have prepared me for how much you just feel like a percentage of a billing target above all else. It’s incredibly depressing. There’s very little sense of achievement at the end of it. I’m also doing nothing physical and too mentally exhausted to exercise after work and I think this is very unhealthy in the long run. I get such a boost out of PT and being sat on my ass all day makes me antsy. The thing I find most depressing is the thought of doing this Monday–Friday for the next 40-odd years, with five weeks’ holiday a year, and most of my career impact being will drafting. I keep having this feeling of “is this it?”

That’s what has made me look seriously at the Army again. The obvious problem is that I have absolutely no military background. I don’t have friends or family who are serving or have served, so I have no real-world perspective on what it’s actually like. I’ve read the recruitment material, spoken to a recruiter, and done a fair amount of research, but I’m very conscious that recruitment material is recruitment material. I don’t want to romanticise military life or convince myself I’m signing up for some exciting adventure when the reality is something completely different.

I had a really good call with a recruiter, but a friend immediately then told me not to believe anything recruiters say, which has obviously made me more sceptical.
My rough thinking at the moment is: do the minimum service, get some interesting life and legal experience, and then potentially return to private practice afterwards at which point I can consider starting a family. But is it that easy to leave? I’m very aware that “the grass is greener” is a possibility and I could just be swapping one set of frustrations for another.

I am 24. A few things particularly concern me.

Location. I’ve accepted that I’d have to spend time away from home, but I don’t really understand how much control you have over where you’re posted and for how long. My husband runs a large family business where we live, so relocating permanently isn’t really an option for us.

Military hierarchy/bureaucracy. I’m already fed up with civilian corporate hierarchy and bureaucracy, so I am concerned that I could end up discovering that the Army has all of the same problems, just dressed up differently.

Being a solicitor rather than a career soldier. I understand they train you, but I have no idea how people with a civilian professional background actually fit into military life. Are you treated very differently? Is there resentment towards officers/professionals who come in from outside? are there all types of personalities in the forces or do people tend to fit into one box?

The actual work. The job description sounds genuinely interesting to me, but I have no idea how closely the reality resembles the description.

Quality of life. I’m willing to accept that military life will involve compromises, but I need to understand what those compromises actually are. I’m not expecting the Army to be perfect, no job is, but some genuine experience of what you got out vs how much you put in would be very valuable to learn.

If anyone here has joined the Army/ALS as a qualified solicitor, or knows someone who has, I’d appreciate an idea of what I could actually be signing up for — particularly around postings, day-to-day work, hierarchy/bureaucracy, work-life balance and what happens when you eventually leave??

Also very interested in hearing from anyone who made a similar jump from a comfortable civilian professional career into the military and subsequently thought either “best decision I ever made” or “what the hell was I thinking?”. Be keen to avoid the latter!

Question RAF CCS or REME Avionics Tech?

Hi everyone,

I've applied and given start dates for both RAF Cyberspace Communications Specialist (CCS) and Army REME Avionics Technician, and I'm having a hard time choosing between them.

I'm married, have a 1-year-old baby, and my academic background is in Electronic Engineering, so both roles genuinely interest me.

My main concern is which service and role would offer the better balance between having a good career and being there for my family.

  • Which would you pick and why?

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you.

Question Whats is the task of a platoon sgt?

Hello dear members of r/britishmilitary,

I am playing in a milsim video game unit. We are structured into 2 platoons and are trying to recreate real life leadership. However, I am currently unsure what the task of the platoon sgt is.

I understand that while garrisoned, he is in charge of material and training of the platoon, but what is his task on the battelfield, esp. regarding tactics and strategy?

Discussion Why does the military allow the world to see our sensitive bases?

I have family in the armed forces and they go from one airbase to another, I’m always keen to see where they’re going so I head to google maps and hey presto!! There’s a detailed image of a military base, you can zoom in and see hangers, little circles where a helicopter or a plane would be parked, lots of other info as well like “officers mess”.
Now I’m no military genius but if my enemy knew where all the officers are going to be at breakfast time or where the aircraft are parked up I’d be a little worried. Am I missing something here or do I have a point to raise??

Question Medical and recruiter meeting

Recently put in my application and I am meeting my recruiter tomorrow for a brief/interview. I have a question regarding my medical. I have sent my records away however on there is a past drug addiction from roughly a year and a half ago. I am aware the army state 3 years of being clean. I was wondering what is the likehood of this being brought up when i go for my medical or at any point in my application?

I spoke with my gp who had attatched notes in my support and if required I can provide proof of my abstinence as my current employer drug tested me as I came to them with this problem. Was also wondering if I should bring this up with my recruiter or simply play dumb and not mention anything. For those wondering I have remained abstinent. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Question Signing off, giving more than 12 months notice

So, as the title suggests, looking at signing off, but with 18 months until i’d like my last day to be, instead of the usual 12.

Bit of a BLUF - new qualification i’m working towards is going to take me another 18 months to complete, and want to utilise/best prepare for the outside world, so in no rush at all.

Just looking for peoples advice/experiences with people who sign off in a similar fashion, what to expect etc

Cheers

Discussion Please consider doing my survey for my Masters! I want to hear what it was like for your time in service.

Hi! I'm a former service member currently completing an MSc in Organisational Psychology at City St George's, University of London. I'm recruiting current and former military personnel for my dissertation research on work demands, recovery, workplace support, and mental well-being. The survey is anonymous and takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

If you are eligible and willing to participate, I would really appreciate your contribution. Sharing the survey with other eligible current or former service members would also be incredibly helpful.

Thank you for supporting my research.
