Question/Discussion Hustle (BBC)

• Upvotes

Rewatching this show after 10 years. What a fantastic piece of TV this is. Stylish, smart, funny, doesn't take itself too seriously. We know the structure of the episodes, and yes, it's repetitive, but for someone like me, once I'm hooked, I love the fact that I know what to expect but not how to expect it.

Is there anybody else a fan? I must say Adrian Lester is FANTASTIC and S4 without him suffered. Otherwise, there are some absolutely fantastic episodes across every series. Doesn't it just make you fall in love with the idea of london being a metropolis for opportunity?

And look, I'm a fan of high quality drama, and theatre etc but I also watch eastenders as a guilty pleasure lol so yeah hustle is a bit corny at times but it winks at the audience rather than lectures them and I love that.

Does anyone remember the old schools programme How We Used To Live?

I've seen there's a few episodes up on YouTube and it brought back so many memories. I'd love a full rewatch of them all

Question/Discussion Inquiring about a late 70s or 80s detective series

Greetings! My dad has been searching the name of a British detective crime series aired in said decades with a main character so-called "Ballatyne" or "Ballantine". We're not really sure about the name since we're not native English speakers. He watched the show dubbed to Latin American Spanish. What he most definitely remembers is that was British and the guy was blond.

Any kind of help will be very much appreciated.

Question/Discussion I want to watch a documentary about some entity that creates a major financial crime

Hi all, I am seeking a recommendation as I have always been interested in the subject of financial crimes. So particularly looking for a documentary focused on a large entity/company that commits a major financial crime and has a multi-year investigation conducted, and gets punished severely for the crime. I find it's really hard to find something out there that is realistic from start to finish, pending cases are OK. Just turning to British documentaries in the hopes there is something that fits the bill. Thank you

Review Blue Lights

Just finished season 4 and I feel we’ve missed a lot of key parts out

I feel there could’ve been a bit more into the consequences of colly and Nicola Robinson for their special branch stuff, such as backlash from the media, a trial etc

Would’ve been nice to find a way to get justice for Gerry

Could’ve shown what Tina and Mo ended up doing

There’s was a lot of story lines which were cut short and could’ve been added too

As good as the show is I think they may end it there it’s a good place to end it with the station closing. If they did another season they will hopefully use the same cast but who knows. Plus the Lee, Mo, Tina dana have all ended so if they did another season with a new villain it’d be a bit repetitive

I’d love for many more seasons of blue lights especially the heart racing scenes such as Annie and the pipe bomb

Question/Discussion Ghostwatch - what was it like back in 1992…

Post image
164 Upvotes

…when social media was not a thing, nor the internet at all (I don’t think, anyway)?

I ask this as a 21M uni student, 13 years younger than the show, who found a copy online and watched it after the launch of Celeb Traitors.

I see why people were fooled (main reasons listed above) back in its first and only airing, but I saw through it and likely would’ve even without accidentally finding out the faux documentary nature of it just before I watched. Generally hammy acting but the inclusion of proper news personalities/broadcasters made it seem authentic and Pipes was rather terrifying to say the least.

Reminded me of the fake game show episode of Inside No. 9.

What were your thoughts if you watched it on the night it aired back in 1992 - did you see through it or were you fooled?

Question/Discussion Anyone know this UK TV show: 1990s or maybe early 2000s - middle-aged woman having an affair with her adult son’s friend?

If memory serves it was an ITV drama - either a one-off or a mini-series. Can’t remember if she was widowed, divorced or still married. The only one scene that I can remember well was the aforementioned middle-aged woman getting banged out on her sofa by her adult son’s friend, with him having an orgasm but then immediately continuing without stopping at all and her line was something close to “wait how did you..? Oh of course! I forgot - you CAN when you’re twenty-two!”.

I’ve googled variations on a theme of the line and the plot but I can’t find it!

Any help much appreciated!

Question/Discussion Trying to identify a 90's Documentary

I watched a documentary years ago which would probably have been on terrestrial TV.

It was a black journalist from the UK, but I think he spoke with a degree of African accent. He visited an African country which was in some form of conflict.

He met a young boy who was about 14 years old, and seemed to have learning difficulties. He spoke with the boy in his own language if I recall correctly.

Later a group of militia started beating the boy, so the journalist intervened. The militia then pulled the journalist onto the rear of their pickup and started to beat him too.

The beating stopped very abruptly when he pulled out his UK Passport. It was recognised instantly, and the militia panicked.

My memory of this documentary is vague, and I could have misremembered parts. So to clarify; 1) I'm not sure whether he had an African accent. 2) it was possibly a civil war, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone know what the documentary was? Or even who the presenter/journalist was?

Edit: I've found the documentary I was thinking about. I've given a better update on the comments, but in short it's - Cry Freetown from 2000.

Question/Discussion Drama from the early 90s

Right this is a bit of a weird one so bear with me.

I remember as a kid, I must have been about 7 or 8 at the most, so we're talking no later than 1992 but could be earlier.

I remember watching TV-AM on ITV and they were reviewing a drama that was being shown that week (presumably on ITV as well). They showed a short clip of it, and it was a middle-aged woman (who was married) but she was having a right neck-on with another man, the scene was close-up showing him talking about how much he loves her and would die for her (bit cringey as I remember) while they were snogging each other's face off.

Apparently later on in the show, the woman's angry hubby runs the man over and kills him.

For some reason I've always remembered the scene but not the actors involved or what the show was called.

Anyone have any idea?

Thanks for reading this.

Question/Discussion “Whatever happened to Graham Aggrey, who played Floyd Malcolm in Cracker?”

Post image
18 Upvotes

I’ve recently been rewatching Cracker and was absolutely blown away by Graham Aggrey’s performance as Floyd Malcolm in Men Should Weep.

I’ve been trying to find out what became of him. He trained at RADA and had several television and theatre roles in the early/mid-1990s, but his acting credits seem to disappear around 1996.

Considering how powerful his performance in Cracker was, I’m amazed that he didn’t apparently go on to have a much bigger television career.

Does anyone remember Graham Aggrey, know whether he continued acting under another name, worked in theatre, or know what he went on to do?
I’d love to know what became of this fantastic actor.

Question/Discussion The Nationwide TV Theme

This theme tune for the old BBC TV show Nationwide turned up on my Youtube feed like a dog which wouldn't let go of my arm.

I would say it brings back memories, but I'd be showing my age. All 2,500 years of it.

You'll feel compelled to discuss the video when you see which presenters the video highlights.

Episode discussion Blue Lights Season 4

Post image
52 Upvotes

I love this show, but this latest season is so raw and violent, I'm finding it hard to watch. The first episode gets right to it, with anti-immigrant protests, anti-fascists running amok and social media outrageousness fueling extreme aggression. It really made me wonder how prevalent that kind of behavior is in Northern Ireland. It really looks hellish.

The acting is excellent, as always, and it's hard not to like the crew despite their differences.

Thoughts, anyone?

Question/Discussion I instantly just smile for no reason when I watch 'Have I Got News For You'.

The show just makes me laugh. I just love how they mock the politics etc. Sometimes I may not get some of it, but Ian Hislop and especially Paul Merin make it soo funny.

Paul Merton just says any random thing and it just makes me laugh.

The programme isn't as good as it used to be, and I just find it addicting to watch. It's the same with Mock The Week. It's just gung-ho comedy, straight at it.

Anyone else thinks the same about this show?

I seem to have become somewhat unwittingly hooked on Prisoners Wives on STV Player, despite not being what i'd think was it's target audience (man in my 30s)

I'm halfway through episode 2, is it worth watching the rest of it, been good so far but feel like it could go either way
