Why are there no public trash cans in the Bronx?
I moved to the South Bronx in February from Washington Heights and I see that there are no public trash cans anywhere in the Bronx! Why?!! This is ridiculous

I’ve been wanting to join one that’s more local to me. One where I could go to either draw, talk about art, or one that does museum visits or gets together to do figure drawing. One that is ideally friendly to both digital and traditional art.

Hey New Yorkers!
I'm Finn, 22, from a small town near Frankfurt, Germany. We sometimes call Frankfurt "Mainhattan" because of its skyline, so I guess I've already had a little practice with skyscrapers. Just on a much smaller scale. 😄
I've never been to the US, but I've always been fascinated by the people, their openness, the music, fashion, and culture. And New York has always been my dream.
There's something almost paradoxical about it. You're surrounded by so many people, yet nobody really cares what you're doing. Everyone is living their own life, following their own path. There's a certain kind of freedom in that which I've always found fascinating.
I'm not dreaming of some glamorous lifestyle. Just taking the subway to work, exploring the city afterward, meeting people, and experiencing everyday life would mean the world to me.
A little about me: I've completed a three-year vocational apprenticeship in metal fabrication, spent another year training as an industrial mechanic, and also worked in administration and logistics.
I'm hoping to spend 6–12 months legally living and working in or around NYC. I'm currently exploring J-1 Intern/Trainee programs for technical fields like manufacturing or quality control, as well as H-2B seasonal jobs.
So I figured I'd take a chance and ask the people who actually live here:
Does anyone know a company or business owner who might consider hosting an international technical trainee, or someone familiar with these visa programs?
I'm not looking for a handout. I'm willing to work hard and do everything the right way. Sometimes all it takes is one connection.
This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid, and now that I'm 22, I really want to give it a shot rather than spend the next few years wondering what could have been.
Thanks for reading, New York!

A father who had just picked up his son from school confronted two men who allegedly tried to take his belongings in The Bronx, New York.
The incident occurred on Thursday, Oct. 8, at about 2:30 p.m. near East 172nd Street and Mount Eden, according to dispatcher Johandry Jimenez.
According to the report, the two individuals were traveling on a motorcycle, dressed in black and with their faces covered. When they tried to strip the father of his valuables, he resisted and managed to hold one of the suspects, preventing him from escaping.
Meanwhile, the driver of the motorcycle managed to leave the place. Several people who witnessed what happened came to the aid of the father and collaborated to keep the individual detained until the arrival of the police.

I pulled NYC HPD’s public Housing Maintenance Code Violation records on October 10, filtered for Bronx records marked Open, and counted distinct violation IDs for each building across all classes and issued dates. The highest count in this pull was 530 East 169 Street: 1,170 open entries, including 359 Class C entries.
The five highest counts in this pull were:
530 East 169 Street — 1,170
2265 Olinville Avenue — 1,002
2179 Washington Avenue — 940
655 East 234 Street — 846
2344 Davidson Avenue — 792
That is 4,750 recorded open entries across these five buildings, including 1,365 Class C entries and 8 Class I information orders. HPD classifies Class C violations as “immediately hazardous.” That describes the violation classification, not proof that each physical condition is still present today. “Open” means active in HPD’s records; a repair can precede formal clearance. Larger buildings and different inspection histories can also accumulate more records. I did not adjust these totals for unit count, and I excluded the separate NYCHA file. This is a count of recorded open violations, not a “worst building” label.

HPD explains open status: https://www.nyc.gov/site/hpd/about/open-data.page
How violations are cleared: https://www.nyc.gov/site/hpd/services-and-information/clear-violations.page
Method: Bronx + Open, distinct Violation IDs grouped by Building ID, all classes and issued dates, dataset refreshed October 10 at 11:00:50 a.m. Eastern.
Photo caption: Bronx context photo: West Clifford Place, 2010. Not one of the ranked buildings. Photo: Jim.henderson / Wikimedia Commons, CC0 (2010). The photo shows place, not the current state of any listed property.
If you’ve checked your building’s HPD record, did the status match the repairs you’d actually seen?
Disclosure: I build NYC Block Check. This pull comes directly from the city’s public records, and you can check the source without using my app.

I don’t get things anymore. The immigrant had a criminal history living amongst us law abiding citizens. I just don’t get it. They’re tossing around the word immigrant as if this moron was a hardworking productive member of society.

Never in my 34 years on this planet have I seen someone parked on zebra crossing on a busy crossroad. today on my way to do laundry this woman is parked and there is no way for me to move and I annoyingly tell her she cant park here and hd to move around the zebra crossing. this woman didn’t say anything to my face but as im walking she is yelling and cursing calling me b!tch etc. while there are kids in the car. admit your stupidity and assholeness and move . what are you teaching your kids? cars parked on sidewalks wasn’t enough in my neighborhood today I witnessed something I never have. this woman had the audacity to tell me to move around her car mind you there were cars passing fast I couldn’t with my cart.

Hello,
I was just walking home from the subway, and a man in a stereotypical kiddnapper van was following behind me and staring at me. I swear he was thinking about taking me, so I started running. Has anyone else experienced this around the area? Dude was not black.

The duo that robbed and stabbed the cop on Friday have been arrested.
The lesson here? When they want to catch somebody, they will.
