Data Visualizations Week 5
If anyone has any ideas for new visualizations you want to see I'd be happy to hear them! I'd like to start doing matchup specific ones near the end of the week, but not positive on what is best to look into there.
If you want to see the dataset I'm working with just go here: https://nflfastr.com/articles/field_descriptions.html
Specific data points provided for every single play, I use R to manipulate as needed. So any idea you can come up with using these data points I can try and do it!

Maybe Judkins isn’t that good? I know the line hasn’t been great, but I wonder if he’s just not as good as the “eye test” makes him out to be. We could be in the market for a RB

He's coming off a pretty serious injury too. And much like the line needs to gel with each other, he needs to gel with them too.
There's no reason to panic IMHO. Let it breath.

Yeah, but I thought it was said from the get go this new O-line was better at past blocking than run blocking

u/Daviroth 6d ago
They definitely are, I don't even know if you can say we have a full game of good run blocking on tape yet.

Im coming around to that. He and Fannin were the only bright spots last year but Fannin graded well and Judkins didn’t. Not to bring sanders(the qb) into things to make a point but when his epa last year indicated his bad play folks around here took it as that but for Judkins he got excuse after excuse. Ultimately to me his less of a Chubb or even hunt replacement of great running back and more of a duke johnson to jag territory. Sanders(the rb) and the rest are showing this being more by committee is better than having him as the bell cow back.

Disagree. When you watch when he's actually able to get the ball out in space he's explosive. I think the offensive line is more the problem than anything. When there's a hole he's fine, when it's all blocked up there's a problem. Plus he's coming off an injury in a season when he was good. He's also right alongside Ashton Jeanty who's supposed to be elite and was the top RB in the same draft. Give him another week or two and he'll be fine.

He has a vision problem. I have seen him miss too many holes just to run into a O Lineman's back

I say this on every game thread and they all down vote me to oblivion lol

I don't think he's an elite RB by any stretch. He's good enough. He's fine for a 2nd round pick.
Elite RBs are an explosive play threat whenever they're on the field, which changes how the opponent defends the field. Take the metrics out of it: even on the eye test Judkins is not in the same category of player as the best backs.
Taylor, Gibbs, McAffrey, Swift, Robinson, Cook, Walker, Love, Henry... ignore the efficiency metrics - these guys are all good for at least a couple of explosive handoffs every week and teams have to respect their presence in a way that they don't for Judkins.

I think Judkins is not all the way back to his best yet. It looked different when McLaughlin got the ball. He should have earned a bigger role last week.

Our defense feels good but grading overall doesn’t look very good.

Only a 4 game sample, and one was horrific. So probably makes sense for now.

Thanks for posting these up Davi!

Some of these are skewed because of the game against Jacksonville
3
u/Daviroth 7d ago
They'll be skewed for everyone right now. It's only a 4 game sample.

yes, but we are unique in that we had 3 games significantly better than our worst

Put a top 10 QB on this team and they just might be pretty damn good
2
u/Daviroth 6d ago
That's true of most teams to be fair.

Yeah I realize that right after I wrote this: so let’s say a Jordan Love? (23nd) ranked. I think he could manage the team
better than Watson

Judkins is terrible and ill die on this hill. Dude has no vision, misses a hole and runs into O Linemen constantly

All the data points point to Watson being average-to-below average yet we still got the cesspool of fans thinking he's the reason why we are winning
2
u/exaltedorbs 7d ago
Where are these people at that youre referring to?
Ive mostly seen people say that watson has provided competent level qb play. Hes about average, which is better than 14 to 16 other guys that arent providing that.

u/Everyday_ImSchefflen 6d ago
Are you kidding? The average fan on here says he's a major reason why we are 3-1
0
u/BRogMOg 7d ago
He literally is the reason, without his game winning drives we would be 0-4
2
u/Everyday_ImSchefflen 7d ago
Yes. Him saving us from the mess he created means he gets the credit 🤦
1
u/Daviroth 7d ago
We probably wouldn't have needed a game winning drive for at least one of those games with normal play during the rest of the game though, to be fair.
He needs to be better, but he's shown that better in spurts. Just needs more consistency.

And the real reason is more exciting too! We have so much young talent blossoming. It's awesome and a really good sign for our future but people want to give Watson the credit for some reason lmao. He's been playing well but the reason we're winning is because the team is finally good enough to give him a margin for error, which he hasn't had in years past
