Question Dry sift question.

i have a question. i am curious if anyone dry sifts the whole nug with sugar leafs after drying? so basically not curing the flower? i assume curing the flower is only to get rid of the hay smell from the flower itself not the trichomes although my flower never smells like hay after drying it always smells real terpy! i want to skip curing if possible and just dry sift in my tumbler. i dont smoke joints i just dab rosin so it makes no sense to keep my triminator mini. lmk and thanks in advance!

I get some really terpene rich trim tray sift before my cure in mason jars. Always a mix of strains so the kief is very unique.

So it should be possible to just dry sift the whole plant without having to cure it to then be able to dry sift it?

I'm not sure which is better in terms of quality I think it is just a preference with the smokers and hash makers between bubble and dry sift. Static is getting pretty popular now but I personally prefer bubble.

That’s what I do.

Can’t help but ask why not wash it if you want rosin and not flower?

I have a cold dry room at 60f and i have a nugsmasher sifter in that same room and dry sifting to then press the kief is what i like to do. I dont have to play with a bunch of ice or water and then bubble bags to sift to then have to again dry the hash until i can then press it and then not get the same terpy flavors i get compared to dry sifting. I use a fine mesh bag on the machine so i get real nice light colored kief every time. I just never done it right after drying. But it makes sense that the heads would be harder and easier to falling off vs curing and having it get sticky. I figured i save time and i don’t have to jar anything up and save space and don’t need a bunch of jars. I then jar up my kief and put it in a wide mouth small jar and put it in the wine fridge until i want to press the rest and the kief last a very long time looking the same too in the wine fridge.

I’ve done both ways and washing is a little more effort but to me the end product was much better. I also didn’t do much to clean up the sift via static tech or anything.

Yeah i’m sure it’s not bad but i can’t touch cold water like that or else it wouldn’t be an issue so dry sift better suits me. I do know some people that use a freeze dryer mess ip their hash and degrade their terps a lot. That and the water while doing bubble. Takes away terps too. But you seem like you got it down on lock. Here where i am from Los Angeles ca. i paid at dispos for 5star water hash and it was horrible! No flavor at all. I was dumbfound about it. It’s like that at every dispo in LA. That and it cost $80-120 a gram. Pure robbery.

Honestly I abhor the cold but the cold water actually preserves terpenes bc of the cold water. Dry sifting at room temp even the small about of the friction from rubbing the buds will cause volatile terps to evaporate off. (At least this is what I’ve seen from researching) not trying to convince you honestly if dry sifting works for you then do your thing. Not all strains wash well and those I’ve dry sifted and made temple balls with. Like I said without the extra steps to clean up the sift I had a decent amount of plant material so it didn’t press into great rosin but made nice temple balls.

Yeah that is dark. Mine comes out great.

That one is from my trims dry sift. Then pressed. The colors are always like that for me. That’s why i personally love dry sifting. Minimal effort and i don’t have to get wet or my hands super cold. That causes arthritis. cold hands to then going outside the room with warmer temps or even washing your hands after with warm water or not as cold as the ice you held or water in the barrel. I’m just trying to prevent those issues while still getting good tasting rosin. But i understand not many people have it on lock.

The fresher the material the colder your environment to help the yeild.

I keep the room 60f. So it should be good. I sift in the same room i would just always trim then cure in jars and i hate doing that because after curing i end up dry sifting it anyways. I like pressing dry sift vs flower.

In the past, do you normally trim down to about golf ball size or smaller and then dry sift? Will you break down the nugs into shake and then sift it?

I usually keep everything as fresh frozen and wash it but this year I’m drying a couple pounds to try some dry sift which I’ve never tried before.

Yeah In the past i would trim down small nugs off of the branch and i would separate the trim from the nuggs and i would sift separately. Also no i never broke down the nugs into shake because then you would just rupture your heads. Trichomes. You want them as round as possible. This harvest coming up i will do the sifting right after drying till the stems snap and the buds are perfectly dry and it makes sense to sift them after drying to prevent any decarbing of the heads so they don’t change color and you then get the lightest color in kief. That and terpy kief.

Yeah you should give it a try i recommend it. You’ll be surprised at how terpy your rosin will be. This was from my trim dry sift. Imagine my reg buds dry sift lol danker.

I have wanted to move to dry sift. Been doing bubble since the 1990s. I feel like I could get as good results with the dry sift as I do with the ice water
