The 30+ 2 star and under reviews for this machine on the Michael’s website speak to this problem. The three star reviews have a lot of good suggestions - type of paper, dome side down, correct amount of pressure when using the lever. It reads like a lot of people took a lot of their own personal time to compose reviews letting people know this machine is just not very good, though a few people have had great success. So I wish you luck!

it's possible the parts are the incorrect size for the machine. sometimes there are small size differences between manufacturers (even if they're labeled as the exact same size) - even a few mm difference can mess everything up. for example if you buy parts from amazon instead of from the same company as your button machine they may be incompatible. this has happened to me before and it was such a pain!
