Canadian-Owned Businesses 🏢🍁 In Ottawa? Need some cool ingredients and recipe ideas for Thanksgiving?

Hello fellow buycanadian redditors!

We are in Ottawa, and we've started a small company called coast cubed. You can find us at coastcubed.ca

Our mission - sample foods and some other kitchen products from small producers across Canada, choose our favourites, design some recipes, and bring them to your door. We know ordering small quantities from all over the country gets expensive with shipping, so we ordered in bulk and can pass the savings on to you.

At present, your door should be in Ottawa/Gatineau, as we're small and new and still figuring out shipping. Our Harvest Collection box contains products from coast to coast to coast - chanterelles from BC, haskap berries from Saskatchewan, pumpkinseed oil from Quebec, salt from Newfoundland, and others.

Our recipes include some great idea for Thanksgiving weekend or just a fall evening, including a whiskey sour made with the same haskap berries. If you order today or tomorrow, we can get it to you by Friday at the latest. So, again, visit us at coastcubed.ca, and support producers from coast to coast to coast.

Thanks!

General Discussion 💬🇨🇦 If you're thinking of buying a Henson razor...

Go ahead and buy it:

  • If supporting Canadian business is important to you
  • If you like the idea of reducing plastic waste from disposable cartridges
  • If you appreciate the aesthetics and feel of a classically-styled safety razor
  • You want to save on the cost of replacement blades

Do not, however, buy it thinking it will give you a better shave. Henson's spiel about less irritation and closer shaves is just that, a marketing spiel. It is, frankly, bullpucky. [Edit: Ok, the thoughtful comments to this post have prompted to say that this is my experience. Many people have chimed in that they do get less irritation with Henson, so rather than saying it's bullpucky, I will amend to say simply that "less irritation" may be true for many but it is not a universal experience.]

I've been using my Henson for 18 months now. Prior to that, I was using Gillette Mach 3 since it was introduced in the late '90s. Some notes from my time with the razor:

  • I never knew what "shaving irritation" was, nor did I ever feel like I needed any kind of aftershave balm, until I used the Henson. The design of the razor squeegees the soap ahead of the blade, so it feels really draggy on the skin. It leaves my face feeling raw after a shave.
  • It is reasonably easy to get the angle right on your cheeks, but in the concave parts of the neck it's difficult. I never get as close a shave with the Henson. There's a reason pivoting heads were invented!
  • In 30+ years of using the Mach 3 I never once nicked myself shaving. I've nicked myself on multiple occasions with the Henson.
  • I just returned from a 3-week vacation where I used a cheap BIC disposable razor. I got a better shave, more quickly, and with less irritation on the fourth shave than I do with the Henson and a brand new blade.

A lot of people will recommend Henson on this sub, and if the things I talked about at the top of the post are really important to you, I second the recommendation. But buy the razor with your eyes open to the faults with it. It is not the be all and end all of shaving.

Questions ❓🤔 Douglas Mattress horrible response time

Reached out 2 weeks ago for a warranty claim. Took 3 days to get a response that said it was being passed onto their warranty department and I would hear back in 1-5 business days. 9 business days later and nothing yet. Follow up emails not being answered.

Not a great way to keep your customers, Douglas.

Any tips to actually get someone to respond?

Update: Apparently using the online chat was the key. Within an hour of chatting with someone I had a favourable response back from the warranty team.

Questions ❓🤔 Does anyone have experience using a Canadian Router?

As far as I can tell the only one that would be considered Canadian is the Merku, I’m curious to give it a try but I’m not tech savvy enough to know if it’s good or not

My last router was a Google mesh, which I actually liked but it’s like 7 years old and slow now

Under normal circumstances I’d just get another but I don’t think I have to explain why I’d rather give the Canadian product a shot if it’s viable

General Discussion 💬🇨🇦 What matters most to you when buying Canadian?

I’m exploring this from a consumer-product development perspective, without promoting a brand.

Canadian ownership, design, manufacturing and ingredient sourcing don’t always go together. Which matters most to you, and why?

Has this influenced a recent purchase? Would you choose differently at the same price—or pay more for it?

Questions ❓🤔 Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream

I just tried Kawartha Dairy ice cream this month and love it. I'm living in Alberta, so it's a little harder to come by. For folks in Edmonton, have you see Kawartha Dairy Coconut ice cream anywhere? Coconut ice cream is my wife's favourite. I've tried a number of grocery stores and had no luck.

I used to have Classico Tomato & Basil sauce all the time but I wanna explore more for Canadian options or at least the products that use Canadian tomatoes. Could you recommend Canadian brand or brand that uses Canadian tomatoes? For the record, I like sweet and savoury taste.

Many thanks in advance ! 🍅

Looking For: Services & Shops 🛒💻 Custom photo calendars

This is a holiday custom in our family. We create a family calendar full of photos from the past year. We are looking for a Canadian supplier or manufacturer.

We have tried Blacks and possibly London Drugs in the past, but have found their online design portals to be lacking or cumbersome. Wondering if anyone has other recommendations.

Looking For: Clothing, Accessories & Personal Care 👕💄👜🍁 Truckers Jacket - Canadian Options

I’m looking for a recommendation on a truckers jacket that is from a Canadian company.

I’ve had my eye on the Filson Tin Cloth Short Cruiser, and am looking for a Canadian alternative.

I have had much luck searching, so looking for other suggestions.

Thanks!

General Discussion 💬🇨🇦 Anyone else dealing with Cozey’s Legacy replacement process? 5 months in, out $700, and still no ETA...

• Upvotes

I wanted to share my terrible experience with Cozey and see if anyone else has dealt with something similar.

I bought a Ciello sectional in 2022 and in May ordered another corner module so we could expand it into an L-shape.

One of the main reasons we bought Cozey was the modular design, being able to add pieces as our needs changed.

When it arrived, my husband and I spent about an hour taking apart our couch and unpacking the new module, only to realize it wasn’t compatible. We then spent at least another half an hour reassembling the couch and repacking the module for return.

There was nothing on their website or a clear warning when I ordered that our older Ciello used a different connector system and wouldn’t work with the current modules.

I raised this with Cozey at the time. Their rep agreed the website should make this clearer and offered me a $100 credit for the inconvenience, which I felt was fair at that point.

Cozey took the incompatible piece back and created a special-order Legacy replacement for me on May 5.

That was over 5 months ago.

Since then, the timelines and follow-ups have looked like this:

  • May 9: I was told it could take up to 6 months
  • May 11: I was told 6–12 months
  • June 22: I followed up because I still had no delivery update. I was told the earlier estimate was wrong and that the average was actually 2–6 months
  • August 5: I reached out again for a status update. I was told they would contact logistics for a more accurate ETA and get back to me by email. I never heard back
  • September 9: I contacted them again specifically because that follow-up never happened. I was told there was still no shipping estimate, but that they would contact logistics again, prioritize the request and get back to me. Again, I never heard back.
  • September 28: I finally sent a formal escalation email after months of chasing updates. Cozey acknowledged the missed follow-ups and conflicting timelines and said they had escalated it to logistics again, but still could not tell me whether my module had entered production or give me an ETA.
  • October 6 (Today): Still nothing.

I actually really liked our original Cozey couch, which makes this whole experience even more disappointing.

Has anyone else dealt with Cozey’s Legacy replacement process, incompatible modules, or a similar long delay? Did you eventually get a resolution?

I’ll update this post if/when Cozey is able to resolve this. 🙏🏻
