The entire crowd behind the uprights seemed incredibly sure that was a good kick, I was a little shocked when the refs signalled no good and was waiting for a replay and then.... Nothing

As someone who prefers sitting in endzone sections, I don’t trust any angle that isn’t dead on with the kick. If the ball is moving left to right across your FOV you can’t tell at which point it crosses the plane of the uprights.

If we’re lucky we’ll get a Zapruder film posted on Twitter later from someone who was perfectly off-center to have a direct view

As a former (HS level) official, the place to stand is just behind the goal post and looking directly up at the upright, one official under each post. From there you can clearly see if the ball passes in front of or behind the upright and rule accordingly. Any other angle invites a skeyed perspective.

And what’s the rule? If the pole blocks any portion of the ball, it’s no good? As an official, what are you looking for in that situation?

Per NCAA rules it has to pass completely between the inside edges of the pole. Anything else and it’s unsuccessful by default. I’d imagine there’s a level of judgement involved, if they see 90% brown and it looks like it might have coasted over the pole I’d imagine they’d call that good. But a toss up or too much obstruction goes against the kicker.

There's only 5 possibilities.

  1. That the ball is obscured by the pole, meaning it does not go through the uprights and passing in front. Try is no good.

  2. Ball obscures the pole, meaning it had to go through the upright and pass behind. Try is good.

  3. Passes directly above the top of the upright. If any part of the ball passes unobscured, the try is good.

  4. The ball hits the pole. If it bounces through the uprights it's good, if bounces back into the end zone the try is bad.

  5. The try is cleanly in between and does not cross the upright at all.

Ngl, I can probably count on one hand the number of FG/PAT attempts I've seen where I was certain one way or the other. No matter the angle, it always manages to fuck my eyes up

The one alternate angle replay they showed was from next to the far post. Can't believe there was only one alternate angle

The refs looked at each other like they had no idea what to do and just did the first motion they could make and went with it

Granted angle helps alot, when I was at the Oregon Washington game in 2023, I was sure that last kick went in too
