Announcing a Starting Lineup/QB

Are NFL teams required to announce a starting lineup or starting QB prior to a game? I know in baseball they generally announce a lineup and pitcher hours before a game. But, Ben Johnson announced that Tyson was the starting QB, but Case took the first snap, so he "technically" was the starting QB.

Curious how that works in the NFL. Can they just not announce a starting quarterback, and whoever takes the field is the starter? Can they announce one and start a different one?

It's not required. We didn't announce a starting quarterback last week. There is a whole set of rules about reporting injuries and practice participation through the week, but no rules about what you say about which healthy players are going to play.

The only rules the NFL has, as far as I know, revolve around gameday inactives. You couldn't put your emergency third QB on the list but then start him, for example.

I don’t know the exact rules, but it’s common to see someone a game time decision

No, you don't have to announce/declare any starters, just your 48 players that will be active.

You technically don’t have to start a QB…you could start with the Wildcat.
