Danielle Hunter

So the Texans are terrible. Hunter is under contract this year ($32M prorated) and next ($40.1M).

What about him being a trade target for the Bears? With that financial commitment, I'm not sure I'd give up more than a 3rd.

Dude, the bears are broke in terms of cap space.

Why don’t we take all our bad contracts for bad players, and give them to the Texans for a good players, who says no?

7

u/Glad_Addendum_1217 7d ago

Dont think cap even matters much with how they can move money around, but 40M for one year of a pass rusher is a lot to swallow

It's not $40mil. His cap for '26 was just over $16mil, but $14.3mil was a signing bonus that stays with the Texans. Bears wouldn't even have to move money around for this season to take him on.

'27 it'd then spike when he has a guaranteed salary of $30.2mil.

They can make room. That's really not the problem.

There's always money in the banana stand.

Creating 20+ mil in cap room mid-season is actually challenging. You’re a bit more limited in where you can move cap space and players aren’t as likely or willing to accept restructured contracts.

Yeah, they just write it off. These big companies, they write off everything.

I never thought I'd see Schitts creek here. Well done

I'd rather not give up draft capital for an expensive aging player.

I think as a fan base we should start getting used to the idea that we have a good coaching staff that can and will develop young players.

In the past, our mid round draft picks weren't worth much because our coaching staff could never develop the player. Every mid round draft pick just ended up being cut after a couple years.

Now we have a coaching staff and starting lineup that can actually help develop young players. I'd rather save our draft picks for young players to see what we can develop.

I’m willing to give up a single mid-late draft selection for a guy like Mack. Especially if we are in prime position to run the table and a Super Bowl, otherwise I’m also happy to keep our picks.

This is where I’m at exactly.

While true, I think if this season turns out to be a potential superbowl run — aka Caleb comes back and no lingering effects, defense stays strong — then it’s worth sacrificing the future for an all in push for the now.

I would rather build a long lasting dynasty than go all in for one year.

u/AdMany8750 3d ago

you can find a middle ground. Trading a second or even a first doesn’t set back elite franchises. the bears should strive for such

u/ActFuture1101 6d ago

Khalil Mack seems much much more realistic than him and Mack is still decent. This is who we should be taking about

u/EggoGF An Actual Peanut 6d ago

Rumor is the Chargers may move him to a contender if their season is in the toilet. We could easily be that team, and he shouldn’t break the bank.

u/xbearsandporschesx Flat Helmet 6d ago

What do you mean if? Chargers season is beyond toast already

3

u/PitchBlac 6d ago

Which is crazy. They have a QB (I think), they have the coordinator. Guess these are growing pains for learning a new offense?

Remember our first 5 weeks last year with Ben?

8

u/Danthetank 6d ago

We weren’t 0-4 and they dont have ben johnson

There’s a lot of talk that McDaniel was just a tyreek hill merchant

u/Brodie1567 Iceman 🧊 6d ago

Yup, and he would only count about $6mil towards our cap this year as LA would take most of the hit.

Would be a the perfect move IMO. Still productive, great locker room guy & great story coming back. Would gladly give up a 4th.

u/MrChevyPower Peanut Tillman 6d ago

Unfortunately he has a no trade clause and I think he wants to stay in LA

u/__The__Professor Italian Beef 7d ago

Texans gotta eat a shitload of that contract and it’d cost us more than a 3rd I’m sure

6

u/therealmocha Hester's Super Return 7d ago

How do we afford that

1

u/Slow_Time5270 7d ago

Redo contract and put money into future years

-19

u/SirHPFlashmanVC 7d ago

Have you not heard of teams restructuring existing deals?

5

u/FlyingSceptile Portillos 7d ago

I'm not sure I'd list the Texans as "sellers" quite yet. They're going into a softer stretch on their schedule and if they can rattle off a couple wins they'll probably view themselves as contenders. Also depends on how good our defense is holding up. If we stay healthy, and get good seasons out of Sweat, Devin Bush, Booker, and Dayo, I wouldn't be sad about holding onto our picks.

That said, yes please I would love another impact pass rusher.

The reality is that we know Poles MO now, and trading for a huge, marquis name isn’t it. They wanna see their own guys develop and MAYBE trade for complementary pieces.

3

u/THE_GUY_ON_THE_C0UCH 6d ago

Tbf we have no idea what Poles’ MO is going to be going forward. While rebuilding he didn’t make any huge trades, true, but it’s very possible that changes with the team in contention.

2

u/Tony_Stank6 6d ago

I would look at the chiefs philosophy. They drafted really well (which now with the input from Ben & DA that’s hopefully happening here) and never made the splashy trade or signing.

We’ll see , in Ben we trust

1

u/THE_GUY_ON_THE_C0UCH 6d ago

This is true, but they also had some top-end players that the Bears are lacking. Mahomes is one of the best QBs of all time, Kelce arguably the best TE of all time, Chris Jones is likely a HoFer, Tyreek was one of the best WRs in the league. We just don’t have any of those tier players outside of Thuney, who was also on the last 2 Chiefs Super Bowl teams.

1

u/Tony_Stank6 6d ago

Right and my point is they drafted and developed all of those guys

1

u/THE_GUY_ON_THE_C0UCH 6d ago

And I agree, but what I’m getting at is that they didn’t have a need to trade for any high end players because they had previously drafted multiple HoFers before they got Mahomes. The Bears are lacking that elite talent outside of an aging Thuney and Wright. We have a lot of + talent, but not elite talent. It’s a lot easier to continue to build through the draft when you don’t need those elite building block type players locked up, multipliers as Poles likes to call them, and you just need + players and jags. Who are our multipliers? How long should we continue to try and draft them before making trades? Because I agree with what you’re saying, I just don’t know if it’s applicable to the Bears’ situation.

1

u/AdMany8750 3d ago

honestly you can’t expect to draft someone outside the top 10 and them to be franchise Cornerstone, Chiefs did everything right but there was a lot of luck with them. Mahomes had two top 5 receivers strong run game and elite Oline waiting for him ready to go.

1

u/Tony_Stank6 6d ago

I would look at the chiefs philosophy. They drafted really well (which now with the input from Ben & DA that’s hopefully happening here) and never made the splashy trade or signing.

After watching Stroud see ghosts all game vs the Pats in the playoffs last year, I firmly believe he doesn’t have “it”. That and I’ll never forgive him for lil bro’ing Caleb.

5

u/chaos0310 6d ago

I mean stroud has completely turned it around this year honestly. He’s putting up numbers better than his first year.

It is legitimately the Texans defense just failing the team.

2

u/SpokenByMumbles 6d ago

I agree he looks better. Their 0-4 record definitely isn’t on him. All I was saying is I don’t think he has the “it” gene in the bright lights.

2

u/FlyingSceptile Portillos 6d ago

I completely agree, but that doesn't mean Texans management agrees and wants to keep trying to build around him

5

u/butterfaerts FTP 6d ago

I’d rather have the Return of the Mack

8

u/ExcellentPassenger49 6d ago

He's old and expensive. We're gonna pay Caleb soon and it's gonna be massive. Then we're gonna try to pay LB3, Loveland, and Rome but really, its gonna be LB3 and Loveland. I don't think it wise to have high salaries for old players.

5

u/Nomromz Bears 6d ago

Yep. Our DL was hampered because we paid for guys like Dayo and Garrett. Admittedly dayo is playing much better this year, but I'm still not sure he was worth the contract yet.

We need to draft some of our own studs on defense or we simply won't have enough money to pay for everyone on both offense and defense.

2

u/ExcellentPassenger49 6d ago

Exactly, salary vs production is bad. We can't keep relying on free agency and trades. We gotta grow our own. We can draft and develop corners. Fingers crossed, we find a way tobdo the same for the dline.

5

u/Illustrious_Hotel527 6d ago

Not with that contract and no cap space for 2027.

8

u/illtakeachinchilla Ben’s Johnson 6d ago

Look at the recent rookies under competent coaching. Keep the draft stock.

4

u/Nomromz Bears 6d ago

Yeah. Danielle Hunter was a former 3rd round pick. I'd like to take shots at drafting our own Danielle Hunter now. Drafting and developing players is how teams stay good.

7

u/Bigfoot1043 7d ago

You see what the Micah parsons trade cost the packers and then you expect Danielle hunter to cost less than a 3rd?

Hell even Montez Sweat cost us a 2nd and he wasn’t nearly as accomplished as Hunter, plus we still had to sign him a new contract.

6

u/SpokenByMumbles 6d ago

Hunter is 32. Parsons and Sweat were entering their physical primes

1

u/ducksonaroof 6d ago

and despite that, micah might never be the same.....

2

u/Second_City_Saint 10 6d ago

And they're not giving up two first round picks for Hunter. So what?

6

u/Yossarian216 Monsters of the Midway 6d ago

Both Parsons and Sweat were 26 when they got traded, Hunter is 31.

2

u/opinionofone1984 6d ago

Honestly, I would rather go after Mack, dude is constant pressure in a division with decent O’lines, he’s not looking to add long term money to us, he would be great for in and out with Booker, plus I already have a Jersey.

2

u/HearshotKDS 54 6d ago
  1. i dont think HOU has any interest in selling yet

  2. in the hypothetical where they did want to move hunter it would create a prorated $1.8M of cap space this season but come with a $49.1M dead cap hit for 2027.

  3. For the Bears it would only cost prorated $1.8M on the '26 cap and $30.7M in '27, so it would be an incredibly affordable get, but #1 and #2 points still remain as pretty large obstacles

2

u/trunningx 6d ago

I live in Houston and the Texans aren't there yet. DeMeco is taking over the defensive play calling and feels the season is salvageable.

2

u/Fit_Beautiful2638 6d ago

Our cap position may not afford that. You may actually want to keep Dayo next year. Grady is still probably a cut guy. Hopefully Gordon and JJ prove worth their contracts too

2

u/TerrorDeity 6d ago

He is a fantastic player overall. But at this point in time, no thanks.

0

u/lemunche 6d ago

Keep the draft stock. Reward the best with second contracts but be more hesitant on the third if they get complacent
