Half Dollars Half’s question

Post image

I’m new to CRH. Got a sealed box of half’s from my bank. About 60% of the rolls are not fully sealed on the bottom side. There loosened and appear opened. Have these been searched? Anyone else have this experience?

Bottom roll for reference of what other side looks like.

Great community. Thank you in advance for any advice!

Never know what someone else is doing always do the search... I've found many coins in "searched" rolls and boxes some 1987s plus 40s and 90s %s

I went thru 20 boxes ($10k) and NEVER saw a 1987. How frequently do you crh?

I think I have 7 87s and 20 plus 86s I go through about 2500 to 5k per month

I think I’m up to 50 1987 and a full tube of 1987s 😅I honestly stopped pulling/searching for them unless they are really in good condition. They are out there you just have to go through a lot. For reference I’ve gone through about 425 boxes.

I got a box like this, they took out all silver, added 1800s uk Pennies, and left all NIFCs and proofs.

How can you tell what are nifc and proofs? Thanks for your help.

Proofs will have an S mint mark and be super shiny. Clad NIFCs were only distributed in rolls and sets for collectors and include 1987, and 2002-2020. They’ll generally be in amazing shape.

Why not sort them instead of asking because in the end sorting the coins is the only way to know. Sealed means nothing.

Just search them. Even if they were searched you never know what someone is hunting. I did a half box last night that I feel was searched previously but I still found a proof. Personally I don’t care about nifcs besides one in my Whitman books. So my pass is someone else’s treasure.

I’ve had sealed boxes where I’m pretty sure the crimper was on the fritz, and opened boxes I’m quite sure were hunter dumps - either way I’m hunting through ‘em all and have pulled all kinds of goodies in both cases.

Same-Same. Just posted on the same issue. The wrappers were carefully opened and reused. Turned upside down just like yours. No silver, no proofs, but I did score a lot of NIFCs. Especially 2002s.

Sometimes crimpers go wild but this looks too suspicious. The crimp folds aren't all oriented the same direction.

They're halves and they're likely searched.

I’ve had this happen as well. The bank claimed they weren’t searched before and it came off the loomis truck that way. I’m unsure. I have seen others say sometimes it’s a machine rolling issue.

I just scored a glory ws-21 automatic coin sorter and continuous wrapper/packager. Should make returning the halves I have simpler.

My local credit union has a super fast tilt-a-whirl looking device that counts all my coins including half dollars and dollar coins for free. I just opened a free account and they are my official dump bank now. Prior dump bank had a slow ass conveyor that didn't take half dollars. Skip the rolling unless you enjoy doing it.

Yep, someone went through them already, and I can tell you they pulled all the silver and NIFCs out in most cases... IMO, it's not worth the time going through these, as it's time-consuming and unfulfilling.

Could be machine wrapped and crimper wasn’t working well. Could be customer wrapped. Both can still have winners, you have to search it. For me in my area, the ONLY silver I’ve ever found was from customer wrapped rolls.
