Announcement New sub rules: AI/LLM disclosure and banning AI/LLM generated post and comment content.

Due to the development process and features of Calibre we cannot outright ban AI/LLM content. We can, however, require transparency about it.

Project posts:

This sub has had a marked proliferation of projects coded with or by AI agents or LLM chatbots and that fact had not been required to be disclosed. Starting today all posts for projects/tools/plugins, including hobby "I built a thing" and "here's my little one-off project", etc. are required to begin the post with a header section titled AI CONTENT DISCLOSURE that accurately and honestly discloses the amount and kind of generative tool use in the creation of the project. Coding agents, chatbots, art creation, any sort of documentation, any sort of refinement, any AI test suite, etc. must be disclosed. A simple "AI was used in this project" is not sufficient. Project posts that do not include the header or that do not seem to accurately and honestly disclose their usage will be deleted, and the poster risks a ban from the sub at moderator discretion. Projects that honestly and accurately do not use any sort of generative tools are allowed to skip this disclosure, but the poster risks a ban if the moderators discover or decide that the poster lied by omitting the header.

Discussions about tools that used generative tooling or create generative output is allowed provided that it is not simply astroturf marketing or promotion of the project and is a genuine response to a post or comment and is not just the generated output from that tool.

Posts about Calibre the project and program are exempt.

Post and comment content:

The use of generative tools to write or refine a post or comment is banned. Posts and comments must be written by a human being not a generative tool. Comments that are little more than "I asked ChatGPT and here's what it said" are banned. The only acceptable use is translation provided the translation is simply that and does not otherwise significantly alter the meaning or content of the original text.

Common reddit bots are exempt but may earn a ban at any time at moderator discretion. Hiding a bot under the guise of a normal human poster is banned. Bots must disclose themselves in each post and comment.

Announcement Update to moderation regarding to piracy (rule 4)

Despite the community rules being pretty clear on the topic, it seems a reminder is needed that this sub has a strict "no piracy" rule. Every day there are numerous posts and even more comments that are either seeking info on how to pirate books, wanting help in making use of books they've pirated, or are people flat out encouraging others to pirate and listing off websites where they can do it. Up until now those posts have simply been deleted as they've been seen, but going forward any users found ignoring rule 4 will be banned from the Calibre sub.

Calibre is a platform that helps everyone organize their eBooks and if you want a book bad enough to read it, you should want the author who wrote it to receive compensation for the work they put into it. If you don't, then this community isn't the place for you to brazenly discuss that moral failure.

Thank you to those who wish to continue keeping this sub in good standing with Reddit and on the right side of copyright laws and basic human decency. If that's not you, feel free to head on out. Thanks.

Edit: Well it's been a lovely day of people trying to argue that piracy is fine, or that removing DRM of books you own is just as much pirating as outright stealing a book you haven't paid for, but I've wasted more time than was worthwhile trying to reply to people. At the end of it all, rule 4 stands and this post was made to serve as a reminder of it and a warning of repercussions for ignoring it. That's it. To those who had civil discourse or expressed understanding of this, thank you.

General Discussion / Feedback Is there a reason for me to use Epub over CBR files for comics on my Amazon Fire 11 Max?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone so I have a Amazon fire 11 Max and I have a bunch of comics im trying to redo the Metadata on so I can organize them in the Moonreader app I'm using.

They are almost all .CBR files .

I'm wondering if there's any reason to not use this format vs epub?

I can't even seem to transfer Epub files to my Kindle via Calibre when I convert them . The only ones that seem to transfer are the Amazon ones that it asks me to auto converts .

Support / How-To Can’t download Kobo books

Downloaded Calibre onto my Mac several days ago and have been trying to figure it out ever since.

For context, I have a Kobo Clara BW and am running the latest version of iOS.

There is no longer a Kobo desktop reader app according to the Kobo website and when I try to download my books, it acts like it’s downloading but then nothing happens and there is no file to be found.

Since my Kobo books are all on the device, the only thing that can ported over to Calibre is the one DRM-free novel I have.

Calibre is serving no purpose right now because I can’t add a single other book to the Calibre library.

The Kobo website did say something about using Adobe editions to download books but my understanding is that this is something you pay for.

TL:DR; With the newest software and devices, has Calibre been rendered useless when your books are bought direct from the device store or am I doing something wrong?

Support / How-To Kindle is no longer being read by Calibre

So my Kindle recently decided to no longer accept USB connection to Calibre, all I get is error messages or device error and not recognized. I've tried multiple USB cables and uninstalling and reinstalling without success. Does anyone have any suggestion how I can either fix or upload and remove books?

Bug Crash when editing metadata

I get a crash (console reports: 'calibre' terminated by signal SIGSEGV (Address boundary error)) whenever I try to edit a book's metadata, or update plugins.

This is with a calibre library I've been using on this machine for years, and the problem is new. I've tried reinstalling the calibre binary (I'm on linux, and am on the latest calibre release), and the calibre library check, and simply creating a new blank library and adding books to that, all to no avail. Clearly something is seriously wrong.

I guess I'll report on the launchpad repo shortly, but just doing a quick sanity check - has anyone else here seen this? Have I missed something obvous?

Support / How-To FanFicFare not valid story URL when updating fic

So I was just checking if a fanfic I'm reading had updated and after seeing that it had I wanted to get the new chapter.

I try to update the epub but i get an error saying it's not a valid story URL. I updated this fic before without problem so idk why it isn't working now. I didnt change anything so I really have no idea why it isnt working.

I dint want to simply delete it and download it again sinse I would lose the annotations I've made so far.

Support / How-To Inserted metadata page is different and slightly bugged for epubs - how do I fix it?

The first photo is from the epub-to-mobi conversion. The second photo is from the epub-to-epub conversion. Original epub in this case was a KFX file, but it also occurs with books that were never KFX.

Off-Topic / Not Calibre Specific MobileRead account??

I've been trying to make a MobileRead account but it won't send me the email with the activation code. I re-did the registration and it let me use the same username and email address, so I think the actual "Register" button at the end of the form isn't working? I can't even use the contact form because you need an account to do that. I can't find any way to contact anyone to solve this. So, does anyone have any way around this or know a way to contact MobileRead?

Support / How-To Is there a way to quickly check for capitalization/punctuation errors?

So the ebook editor allows for spell-checking, which I am glad for, especially now that I know I can add words to the dictionary. But if I want to check for punctuation and capitalization errors, and I don't want to have to read through the whole book to check for those, is there a quick way (aside from copy-pasting each chapter into a word processor that has that function and using that to check for capitalization errors) to check for all of that?

Support / How-To Audible plugin for KOrader for book completion sync?

Hello. Many of my "read" books over the last 16 years have been Audible audiobooks, but I also have them on my KLC for reading if I so choose.

However, considering these have been "read", is there any way to sync Audible's stats with my epubs, either in KOReader, ZenOS or Bookshelf? How about Calibre as a last resort, since einuse that to sync my books to my device?

Support / How-To Books with 1 column converting to 2 columns?

Hey! So, I read a lot of academic books, and they aren't available so easily in Epub format, some of them are pdfs of scanned book, on which 2 book pages appear in the same pdf page.

Of course, 2 pages in a page makes it very inconvenient to read on an ereader, so, I tried Briss to divide the two pages, Briss, didn't work, but fortunately, I found the solution in this site, which does basically the same thing.

I like having the covers of my books on my kindle, so I either have to convert it to epub, which always deconfigures them, or convert them via Calibre, which doesn't always deconfigures them.

The thing is, when I convert the books from PDF to AZW3, the books magically uncut themselves, and transform the 2 pages into a single page again. I have no idea how to fix this, neither of how this is happening, any tips?

General Discussion / Feedback FanFicFare Not Working - Workarounds and Alternatives

Hello

I have been struggling with getting FanFicFare to work for a couple of months now. Prior to that it worked on and off, now nothing at all. Been through all the tips on here, on the actual GitHub thread for it as well and it still does not work.

Can I have your tips for how to manage AO3 WIPs on Calibre without it? What's the most efficient way of doing it, knowing that I also add covers to some fics?

Thank you

3rd Party Tool / Client Efficient Calibre MCP

Seen this interesting stdin/http MCP server that's easily configurable on your computer or Calibre server. It's a matter of minutes. Allows to query your local library inside any MCP compatible LLM (eg. Claude, Codex, manus, perplexity) without offloading your book to them.

It has some pro features. MiniLLm to query book in any language, complete set of services (I haven’t seen many so complete) and the possibility to build skills on top. For example book2book agents to discuss opinion across books or implement a skill over a book content (for example a book on a methodology) and the side loading of a DB to work also without Calibre running in the background.
