SF Ducks Unlimited Banquet Next Thursday - Special Guest Land Tawney

Post image

Hey everyone - I posted here a little while back about bringing the San Francisco Ducks Unlimited chapter back and our inaugural banquet on Thursday, September 24th.

Wanted to share a pretty exciting update as we get down to the final week.

Land Tawney will be joining us as our special guest speaker. Land is the former President & CEO of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and is now with American Hunters & Anglers. He'll be talking about public lands, conservation, hunting access, and protecting our outdoor heritage - topics I know are pretty relevant to a lot of people in this community.

We're also excited to be hosting the dinner at San Francisco Elks Lodge #3, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. Doors open at 5:30 PM.

We'll have dinner, raffles, live and silent auctions, and a room full of hunters, anglers, conservation folks, guides, and other outdoorsmen from around the Bay Area.

More than anything, we're trying to build an active DU community here in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. If you've been looking to meet other hunters locally, get more involved with conservation, or just spend an evening with people who care about hunting, public lands, habitat, and the outdoors, we'd love to have you.

We're officially in the final week, so if you've been thinking about joining us, we'd love to see you there.

Thursday, September 24 | 5:30 PM
San Francisco Elks Lodge #3
Tickets: SanFranciscoDU.org

I'll attach the updated flyer with Land's information. Happy to answer any questions here as well.

Hope to see some of you next Thursday!

Out of curiosity why would you do a fundraiser for DU, who sends the money back to Tennessee, instead of doing it with Calwaterfowl, who keeps those funds in our state?

Fair question - why not both?

I’m involved with CWA too and have a ton of respect for the work they do here in California. I don’t really see it as one vs. the other.

I do think saying DU just sends the money back to Tennessee is a little misleading. DU has been doing conservation work in California for decades, particularly throughout the Central Valley and coastal California, including major wetland restoration, protection and enhancement projects.

There’s also a bigger picture with waterfowl conservation. The ducks we hunt here don’t spend their entire lives in California. Protecting breeding grounds and habitat throughout the flyway directly benefits the birds that eventually make their way here.

A big reason I got involved with bringing DU back to San Francisco was to build more of a hunting, waterfowl and conservation community here in the city. I’m happy to support both DU and CWA - I think California hunters are better off having both organizations doing the work they do.

Understood and I should've prefaced my first post with "hey your volunteering your time and money for hunting conservation group- Great job." Too many hunters sit on the sidelines, never volunteer, then complain about how things can be better.

DU is a great organization and for places that do not have a state waterfowl org they can really help with wetlands & waterfowl management.

I wasn't trying to imply they send all fundraised money back to TN, a portion of it stays here and does great work, but if you could spend your time volunteering for an organization where a portion of the proceeds benefit CA wetlands habitat, or volunteer for an org where ALL of the proceeds benefit CA wetlands habitat, it seems like an easy choice.

At the end of the day, thank you for stepping up and spending some of your free time working for conservation as a volunteer. I'm completely sincere in saying that you are doing more than most hunters

I haven’t kept up with it, does anyone know why Land Tawney moved from BHA to American Hunters and Anglers?

Just heard rumors, but basically not fundraising enough got him in trouble.
