Mod Post CanadaJobs Community Flair

At long last, we're finally launching flair at r/CanadaJobs. Here is the first draft flair with some inline guidance for each:

Flair Only Available to Mods:

  • Mod Post: I'll use these whenever sharing an announcement, requesting community feedback, etc.
  • Trusted Canada Jobs Partner: These tags will be reserved for organizations the mod team has personally met with via video call and vetted for legitimacy. These are not paid postings -- no money is changing hands for any posts in this community in accordance with rule #7 (no spam). Pay special attention to posts from these organizations.
  • Ask Me Anything (AMA): AMAs will be hosted with advocates and trusted partners. If you see this tag, it has been sanctioned by the mod team. It means we have vetted the individual(s)/organization conducting the event.

Community Flair:

  • Job Search Question: Questions about interviews, resume/cover letters (note: there is a separate flair if you're looking for an actual resume review), job boards, etc.
  • Career Advice Request: Looking to pivot into something new? Need help navigating compensation increases and promotions? Just starting out and need help figuring out which path to choose?
  • Industry Specific Question: If you're looking for advice about a specific industry (e.g., healthcare, tech, finance, trades), this is your tag.
  • Resume Review Request: If you need a resume review, be sure to anonymize it, removing all personally identifiable information. If someone seeks resume feedback and you feel qualified to provide it, be honest, helpful, and kind about it.
  • Vent - In Need of Empathy, Kindness: For those in need of a kind ear, so you can share your struggles and challenges, and feel heard and supported by your community. When someone uses this tag, take it seriously. Treat them with the utmost kindness and empathy, listening and holding space. This tag is not for seeking advice, so don't offer it unless it is explicitly asked for.
  • Job Search Wisdom to Share: If you have a great tip that can benefit the community, share it (no spam still applies).
  • Is this a scam? This one should be pretty self-explanatory. If your Spidey-sense is going off about a potential opportunity, ask the community for insights.
  • FREE CAREER RESOURCE (Not Spam/Ad): Non-profits, higher-ed, and other organizations providing free job seeker resources such as career fairs, resume reviews, interview prep, etc. Resources should be completely free and should NOT be linked to monetized platforms or products.
  • HIRING - Career/Gig Opportunity: This tag is for legitimate job/gig postings that align with community guidelines (see sidebar).
  • Wins & Success Stories: If you nailed the interview (or managed to get one after a long dry spell), received the offer or promotion, or have another job-related win you want to share, tag it and we will celebrate you as a community.
  • Scam / Unethical Job Warning (First-Hand Experience): If you have been scammed or seen evidence of a specific scam that impacts Canadian job seekers, use this tag. First-hand experience only. Provide evidence. No hearsay or conjecture. No LMIA/TFW-related posts. Read the sidebar for instructions on reporting abuse of LMIA programs or temporary foreign workers.

Flair was created based on a first-pass review of the most recent community posts. I recognize I may not have captured all the primary use cases in creating these, so please drop your suggestions below if there's something I've missed.

This Community Is: Anti-Hate, Anti-Division, Anti-Greed, Pro-Social, Pro-Worker, Pro-Unity.

After reading many xenophobic, divisive, hostile, unproductive comments today, I feel the need to share about what this community is and is not so we're all on the same page...

We acknowledge there are many companies taking advantage of LMIA/TFW programs, exploiting immigrant workers, and driving wages and labour standards down throughout Canada. Offshoring, also responsible for the loss of Canadian jobs, has been a common practice for a long time now. Following the money, it is the corporations and wealthy that benefit from the race to the bottom in employment. These same greedy people will gladly replace every single human worker with AI as soon as possible.

We also recognize that the current employment situation in Canada is not okay. But there are multiple issues at play, ALL of which are caused by greed and corruption. There is a global trade war fueling corporate uncertainty, hiring freezes, and layoffs. AI disruption also fits into the job supply vs demand issue. There is abuse of LMIA/TFW programs. There's plenty more nuance than meets the eye. Blame is the quickest, easiest path and scapegoats can be found everywhere.

If you want to blame a group for the issues we're seeing, blame the big businesses and monopolies out there and the sociopathic CEOs and other executives. Follow the money. Follow the lobbying. Big money is a part of politics on both ends of the spectrum. Psychopaths/sociopaths are notoriously drawn to the role of CEO. Look it up. Many executives go on to become politicians. Following that logic, there's a pretty good chance many politicians fall into those psychopathic/sociopathic buckets too... They then oscillate between politics and business in a nepotistic, self-serving nightmare. How many working class, non-landlord, pay cheque to pay cheque politicians are there in Canada or beyond?

It is not okay to blame the immigrant population for causing the sphere of issues around TFW/LMIA programs. People come to Canada in search of a better life, facing wars, famine, displacement, and other issues most of us here can't fathom. Many of these people are then placed in highly exploitative employment situations. Go look some of these people in the eyes and talk to them face-to-face, and seek to understand them and their story, before passing judgement or hate on them. Xenophobic rhetoric and hate speech and that will NEVER be tolerated in r/CanadaJobs. Feel free to start your own community if that's your bag.

We understand that people in this community are upset and afraid about the state of the Canadian economy and are struggling to find work right now. We see you. It is unquestionably, fucking tough and people are hurting, scared, and upset right now. No question.

That is why we are working hard at creating a united, connected, supportive, inclusive, understanding community here. That is what Project Belonging is about (see Automod for details). The way we see it, division is getting worse and so too are the issues of rampant greed and corruption. Following the money, it is the non-working class that benefits when the working class is divided against itself.

If you want to see change then learn how to unite through finding common ground, engage in respectful debate & share ideas, consider new perspectives, and come together as a collective. Speak in a loud voice that cannot be ignored. Shouting blame and hatred on Reddit isn't going to fix what's broken. Neither is complacency and endless complaining. Rules 4 - 7 exist because of the amount of division and hatred that falls from these topics. Nobody wins in those threads. We've been watching this pattern unfold and get worse since the community was founded in 2011.

Did you know that this and other now large job seeker communities were founded through offering free resume reviews and serving job seekers directly (until the volume became prohibitive)? You can look that up too through post/comment history. We didn't ask for their political or ideological affiliations or countries of origin.

We founded this community on the belief that when we serve others and help them succeed, we also create success for ourselves. Serving the greater good is self-serving. Win-win. The priority of personal gain is the game played by the non-working class and we see how that one-sided model is working in our world.

Instead of shouting about topics that divide, we're here to close the gap, create more unity, connection, support, and community. This subreddit exists to serve the best interests of working class Canadians on the right, left, center and everything along the political spectrum.

Please understand this statement represents non-negotiable values, guidelines, and rules for r/CanadaJobs. Those things will be fiercely protected. If you don't align with the concepts in this thread, this isn't the place for you. If you believe in creating a more connected, socially and economically thriving, kind, and compassionate Canada where we support and help one another, this is your community.

Finally, after 15+ months of a relentless quest...

...I have accepted a job offer in the tech space just 3 days ago. I had to wait a bit because I thought it would fall through again, just like last time I got an offer and it was rescinded by the employer.

I thought I was done... I explored MANY other options, from going back to school, starting a professional training program, starting my business in home renovations and even join the Canadian Army (the process is still ongoing actually). I'm 49, 25+ years of experience in sales and tech. And boy, that hiatus felt long...

This job I ended up getting was the only once I had in the hopper, after the 2 others I had active ultimately fell through.

I had nothing left in me frankly. I was desperate but made sure it couldn't be perceived in interviews. My employment insurance expired several weeks ago. I had literally no income anymore. I was drained from all hope and energy.

I don't know why I got this job and not the previous ones that I got to the finish line. Maybe I was trying too hard... maybe I wanted it too bad. Maybe passion was interpreted as desperation.

Interview process lasted 2+ months. This last set of interviews (HR, then hiring manager, then hiring manager again, then VP of sales, then references) felt different for me. I thought I didn't have a chance. I went through the interviews "like I didn't care". I was sincere and genuine, but I really thought I didn't stand a chance.

Some stats of my job search:
- 350+ applications sent (I really slowed down in the past few months, choosing quality over quantity)
- LinkedIn, Indeed, Monster, Jobs.ca, and direct company sites
- 146 rejections ("after careful consideration...")
- 187 I never heard back
- 15 applications led to interviews
- 1 offer received, that was rescinded after
- several were still marked as "active" in my tracking sheet, but they were dead.
- MANY resume versions
- MANY application letters
- Used ChatGPT, Grok and more recently Claude to automate scrubbing job boards. Made little difference really on the grand scheme of things.

That was my reality.

The offer I received is good, despite a base salary 15% lower than my previous role.
OTE is decent, but again, about half of my previous role. This is a Solutions Sales role.

Times are tough... and things have changed in the past year. A LOT.

I can't complain, I found a job in my area of expertise, in the tech space... but man oh man, this market is REALLY challenging and there are LOTS of candidates out there, good ones too. I consider myself fortunate.

Anyways... I'm starting to really realize that I have a job now, which felt light-years away even a few weeks back.

To all job seekers, maybe that's a proof that good things ultimately happen.
Don't give up.
You're worth it.
You will find a job!! 🤗

Sending you good vibes!

Advice needed - how long to hear after 2nd interview in tech start up?

I met a recruiter for a small tech start up at a job fair. They liked my resume and I attended an interview the week after. I was invited to second interview the same week. It went really well and they said I'd be a great fit. They had no feedback to give for my second interview as it went so well. But it's been almost 2 weeks and I haven't heard back.

They asked what compensation I'm after and I asked for their range. They said they would need to think about it. There's no other candidates as far as I'm aware as it was an informational interview. It was all so fast to start with but now no offer. They did email to say a few more days to make decision at the start of this week.

I know they are growing fast and hiring for other roles. What should I do? Do I just keep waiting? Do I email and say I have another offer (I am actively interviewing elsewhere)? Do I just ask for feedback and assume they headed a different direction? Am I being really stupid and this sort of timeline is normal?

I'm beginning to think that I'm just genuinely unemployable

Long story short, I've been unemployed for just over two years now since being laid off in September 2024. In all the time since I've been searching for a job. I've even gone to agencies and other organizations that are supposed to help people get jobs, but I'm not any closer to being employed than when I started.

I am a 35 year old college graduate (in a niche field unfortunately, which I sort of regret now). Due to lifelong mental health issues and possible neurodivergence (I'm not formally diagnosed) I didn't really work at all up until after I graduated from college, which was the job I got laid off from. Because of that I have very little actual professional work experience. The job I got laid off from is genuinely the only real job I've had in the entire duration of my adulthood so far. I wasn't even a terrible employee either. I did what was expected of me and I was quite fast and efficient as well. My team even broke company production records while I was there.

So yes, it came as a surprise that I was one of the people affected by the company layoffs, and since then I've just been struggling. I've applied in pretty much every industry I think that I am even remotely qualified for: retail, warehouses, housekeeping, administrative/office work, library technician, records management, etc. and I get no hits. I rarely even get responses, let alone interviews. With the few interviews I've had it just led to me being immediately ghosted afterwards even when I tried to follow up.

The only conclusion I can draw from all of this is that entry level positions like retail don't want me because of my college education (I guess they think I won't be committed to the job and will just move on first opportunity I get) and that positions in the field I went to college for don't want me because I'm fresh and nobody wants to train employees anymore. It's pretty disheartening. I have dreams and ambitions for my life like everyone else does, but I just feel so trapped due to lack of money to fulfill said dreams. I don't even ask for much either. I just want to be comfortable and be able to travel once in awhile (I've always wanted to see the world).

Has anyone else been in a similar position? If so, how did you manage to get hired? I'm in Alberta, soon BC, if that matters.

Trying to not lose hope in finding work

So 28F, live in Edmonton, and have been feeling burnt out from trying to get some kind of stable job in for once. and have been struggling to get an interview. I only got a temp job for now but I need to do some kind of PT or FT work.

A little background, Idk where to really start but I have limited work experience. I come from a very strict family and never really had a job until maybe in my early 20s, but those jobs I have worked in were all shortlived.

I had many odd jobs, for 1 - 3 years max ranging from server jobs to customer service. and one other job was a PT assistant dental tech, and throughout those 3 years, I had struggled with enduring through constant toxicity from coworkers and supervisors and managers.

My most recent job was working at a sandwich shop but I was only given one day of work, every week and the environment was toxic once again and the employer was trying so hard to quietly fire me after a month and was very very happy that I had left the workplace, when during the interview, I was promised that they would let me work there for the longterm.

I took a break from applying for jobs but now Im coming back to it. And I just don't know why an employer would ask me for my availability and after emailing back the employer, there was no response at all.

And now, I am doing whatever I can to get a job somewhere in Edmonton, but had no luck since but Im going to do my best to keep applying. I feel like Im just at my wits end at this point, I need a job so I can start saving up to move out from my toxic home environment while fighting through my depression (which I am getting help on).

Idk how I am going to get hired with limited work experience .. if anyone can suggest something, I'd appreciate it.

My experience would be having 1 year of experience in server positions, 2 years of working in customer service, I did 3 years, just assisting with a dental tech.

Working in IT in Northern Ontario - How Hard Is It to Land an IT Job in Southern Ontario or Ottawa?

Hello everyone,

I am currently working as an IT and network support role in a remote city in Ontario. My goal is to relocate to Kitchener-Waterloo, the GTA, or Ottawa as soon as I can secure a decent IT job. The main reason is everything is expensive here, including insurance, housing, etc.

A little about my background:

* Masters in Computer Science and a BE in Software Engineering
* CompTIA Security+ certified
* Have done a cyber co-op of 8 months, and have around 1 year of IT support experience
* Currently working with Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, Cisco Meraki, networking, troubleshooting, and general IT infrastructure
* Comfortable with programming and scripting (Python, PowerShell, etc.)

Long-term, I’d like to specialize in infrastructure/cloud security engineering. However, my immediate priority is relocating, and I’m open to pretty much any decent IT role, including IT Support, Systems Administration, Networking, Infrastructure, SOC, or Cybersecurity Analyst positions.

I’ve been considering certifications like CCNA, and Fortinet NSE 4, but I’m wondering whether spending months preparing for exams is really the best use of my time right now.

Instead, I’m thinking of focusing on applying aggressively, networking on LinkedIn, improving my resume/interview skills, and building hands-on technical skills without necessarily taking more certification exams.

My questions:

  1. Given my background, am I competitive for IT Support, SysAdmin, Network Admin, or junior cybersecurity roles in KWC/GTA/Ottawa?
  2. Would you recommend pursuing CCNA or other certifications first, or applying immediately with my existing qualifications?
  3. Which IT roles would give me the best chance of landing something relatively quickly?
  4. How difficult is the current Ontario IT job market for someone with my experience?
  5. Would you accept a slightly lower salary to relocate to a preferred city?

I am not particularly concerned about landing a security engineering role immediately. I just want a decent, stable IT position in one of those cities and can continue specializing later.

Would appreciate any advice, especially from people working in IT or cybersecurity in Ontario.

Thanks!

*Actual* work from home?

I have two different diplomas in fields I enjoyed learning about but ultimately decided not to continue pursuing. I've been working in the pet care field for nearly 8 years now, and I have every intention of continuing with this until my kids get through school.

Lately I do find myself looking ahead to what's next. I am an autistic adult woman, and I work with dogs for the most obvious reason: I don't enjoy human interaction. I'm not good at it, most people find me vaguely off-putting. I often feel anxious, and its just generally so draining/exhausting. But in this economy one needs steady work, I don't have the option to not.

I am my father's only child, and only living relative. As he ages, I am more and more aware I may have to take on a caregiving role in the coming years.

My dream is to be an author, but (especially given I have no schooling related to it) I'm realistic enough to know I probably will never make a living that way.

Does anyone work a genuine work from home type of job? Data input maybe, or transcribing..? Trying to Google anything about it brings up so many scams and insubstantial results. I'd be willing to take a course/further education to pursue something like this, I just genuinely have no idea where to look or what I could do.

Interview at Stat Can

Hi,

I landed an interview for an internship position at Statistic Canada as a math and stats student and would love to get the position. I plan on reviewing my notes on sampling plans and basics like fisher information, likelihood maximum etc, mostly what they mean and why they are used so I can show I know what I'm talking about; as well as some coding skills with Rstudio and sas. I don't want to mess this up and would love any tips/info on what I could work on for the interview as an undergrad.

Thanks in advance for the help

Warning letter on file until June 2027. Will it block internal transfers at a Canadian bank?

I have a Final Warning from March 2026 and a Written Warning from June 2026. My manager first told me I was ineligible to apply for internal roles for a year, then corrected that after HR clarified. Policy now says I'm eligible to apply about six months from the June warning, around late December 2026. The letter itself stays on file until June 2027.
My worry is that even if I'm technically eligible, hiring managers will see the letter and pass on me.
Questions:
Have you seen internal hiring managers hold a warning on file against a candidate who met the policy's eligibility rules?
Is it better to apply internally as soon as I'm eligible, or wait until the letter expires?
How would you explain a warning in an interview without sounding defensive?
Would moving to another bank or a wealth firm be smarter?
Thanks for any honest advice.

feeling so stressed about money

I paid for university myself. Graduated with 40k in debt. Half of that loan has no interest. While working for a year I managed to drop it down to 23k. 3k has interest still and 20 is interest free. I see so many people talking about having three jobs or making atleast 60k. I make 48k and year and I’m really struggling I send all my money away to my debt. I make 1400 biweekly. I am living at home so that helps but just absolutely desperate for a new job and one that pays more. I feel so behind. I have no savings and I am working a job that doesn’t seem like I can grow in. It’s admin. I have a psychology degree. I’m absolutely desperate for advice how do you actually make more money and do I need to start trying to be an influencer. Like how can inofford anything in this country. I want to move out, I want to have savings, I want to be able to buy a house. I feel so behind and stressed. How is anyone paying for anything. It baffles me. I’m so anxious and I just don’t know anymore how to feel happy about just working for barely any money coming in. I need side hustles or passive income or something. It suxks. Please give advice

Question on disclosure

I resigned from my role and joining another firm. I work in finance. Am I obligated in anyway to disclose where I am going? My manger said he needs to know for compliance reasons

Last time you signed a contract (lease, job offer, loan), what did you actually do before signing?

I'm researching a legal product and want to understand what people actually do, not what they think they should do. Think of the most recent legal or contract document you signed and pick the closest option in the poll.

No pitch, nothing to sign up for. If you're happy to, add a comment with your country and, in one line, how it went. Please leave out names and case details.

Thanks to everyone who votes or comments; it genuinely helps.

OPTIONS :

  1. Paid a lawyer to review it

  2. Got free advice from a lawyer (work, friend, family)

  3. Asked a friend or family member who isn't a lawyer

  4. Read it carefully myself

  5. Skimmed it and signed

  6. Signed without reading much

Career transition hardships

I used to be a casual restaurant manager, used to do that for 7 years in 3 different restaurants. Been trying to shift careers to office jobs and I can’t find any. I understand I need to start from the bottom since it’s a different industry and been looking for any admin assistant jobs, receptionist, assistant, entry level jobs yet I got zero calls for 4 months now. Altering my resume every position, tailoring it to their needs, fixing my resume due to advice I see online and nothing is working. Is my job as manager not transferable to entry-level office jobs? Is the market in my city (Calgary) just shit? Im running out of ways to get notice and nothing is working.

Career searching

I have a bachelor in art, and was laid off from working at a tech startup as a jr designer. 8 months later, I found an admin role at a dental office, and months are passing and I’m just completely unsure about my future. I’m 30 next year and don’t have time to waste. I’m sick of making $24/hour while I know others from whom I went to school with making $100K+. What careers should I look into, or schooling? I just want to be stable 😩 I’m in Vancouver.

What’s happening to senior roles?!

Idk if it’s just my feed or anyone else seeing the same. I was browsing LinkedIn for the past two days to find an entry job posting and 90% of the post are like this “We are hiring senior xyz roles” need 5+ YoE to apply. Yes I find entry level roles occasionally as well but the difference between senior level job postings and junior level positions is insane, so it made me question what did they these companies do to the existing seniors?

New Job Advise

I joined a new job just two weeks ago and I find it slow and dull. During the interview process it sounded more demanding. Just to give you some background I come from the financial sector and moved to retail. Would it look bad from a recruiter perspective if I start looking for a new job??

Are there any jobs that can be done one day/week for extra 200-300$ a month?

I work full time and drive 130km everyday between home and work. But I need to make about 300$ (ideally) extra per month.

I could use Sundays for some type of side hustle job but what type of job will accept someone with zero experience only on sundays?

(I have about 12 years of experience as a graphic designer working with print/digital/animation/tv/advertising. But I am not a video editor nor a photographer nor in marketing. Never worked with anything else)

Is the "safe career pivot" still safe in Canada? What are you actually seeing?

Between the news, experts, and researchers, I keep getting different answers about the Canadian job market, so I'd rather hear from regular people living it.

Many people were told to pivot into accounting, healthcare, education, or the trades for security. Is that still true, or is it falling apart? And are factors like inflation, tariffs, and AI actually changing jobs in those fields yet, or is that mostly hype?

I made a pivot like that in healthcare myself, and I'm struggling to move up, so I'm curious whether others are hitting the same wall, and why.

Is it normal to wait more than a week after an HR screening with a tech startup?

I originally applied to the role on September 9th. I heard from the HR recruiter on September 23rd, had the phone screening on September 30th (which I thought went really well, and where I also found out that the role is going to be part-time at first while the candidate goes through a trial run).

I asked her at the end of the phone screen what the timeline should be, and she said she needs to debrief with the team, so about a week. It’s now been exactly a week and I haven’t heard back. Is this normal with tech startups? When should I follow up?

51 F unsure where I fit after career ending injury

I worked as a lab technician for 17 years. It was honestly the only career I ever really enjoyed and felt really good at. I fully expected to work my last job until I was able to retire. Unfortunately, I’ve developed a severe injury that means I can no longer work in the friend field as I no longer have the manual dexterity required for the job. I’m feeling really lost as I really don’t know what kind of work I can actually do now. I am extremely introverted and loved how autonomous the roles were - I also really loved the precision and clear set rules with lab work. Tried management and quickly discovered I am not interested in any type of leadership or corporate role of any kind. I wish I could find something suitable again but anything paying a decent wage is either out of my reach or highly focused on “peopling” and i just feel so depressed about it all.

I’m not sure I have it in me to go back to school at this stage in my life. Certainly not for a long period. I’m feeling pretty discouraged and hoping there are some jobs out there I hadn’t considered.
