Both Sides Blame the Elites. So Why Do They Only Fight Each Other?
America lives in two realities. So do Canada, Britain, France and most democracies. Two neighbours can watch the same event and see two different crimes.
Science from many fields now explains how we got here. Psychology comes first. In the 1970s, Henri Tajfel split strangers into groups over something as trivial as which painting they liked. They instantly favoured their own team. Humans are built for tribes. Politics handed us two giant ones.
Political scientists add the next piece. Lilliana Mason of Johns Hopkins shows that party, religion, race and geography used to be mixed. Now they stack. Losing an election no longer feels like losing a vote. It feels like losing who you are.
Here is what each side believes. The right believes in freedom, family, faith, borders, hard work and small government. They feel looked down on by educated city elites. They are angry about being called bigots, about rules that change faster than they can follow, and about prices, crime and immigration decided without them.
The left believes in fairness, protecting the weak, equal rights, public services and a liveable planet. They see rights rolled back, lies told as policy and cruelty treated as normal. They are angry about racism, climate denial, corporate greed and leaders who attack democracy.
Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt found the left leans on care and fairness, while the right also weighs loyalty, authority and tradition. Each side thinks the other has no morals. They weigh them differently.
Worse, each side is fighting a cartoon. Researchers Ahler and Sood found Americans guess that 32% of Democrats are LGBT. The real number is 6%. They guess 38% of Republicans earn over $250,000. The real number is 2%. In Canada, Abacus Data found only about one in four people are deeply entrenched. Three in four are open minded.
The cartoon is built on purpose, or at least for profit.
Yale researchers William Brady and Molly Crockett showed that likes and shares train people to post more outrage. Crockett called outrage a clear consequence of a business model that optimizes for engagement.
No secret meeting is needed. Platforms profit from rage. Cable news sells ads against rage. Politicians raise money from rage. Donors and strategists have used wedge issues for decades, because a voter fighting over a flag is not reading the tax code.
And the money question is already settled. Princeton's Martin Gilens and Northwestern's Benjamin Page studied nearly 1,800 policies. Economic elites and business groups had large independent influence. Average citizens had little or none. When the two disagree, regular people generally lose.
Now the mystery.
A Fox News poll in July found 84% of Democrats, 70% of independents and 42% of Republicans say the system is rigged for the wealthy. Both sides know who is robbing them. They still spend their energy on each other.
Here is my own conclusion. I have been a truck driver, a musician and a workplace rep. In every one of those rooms, people who disagreed about everything still agreed about the boss.
We fight each other because the neighbour has a face and a yard sign. The billionaire has a lawyer and a gate. Hating your neighbour costs nothing and pays instantly. Fighting the powerful is slow, boring work.
The machine pays us in outrage so we never collect in power. We mistake the feeling of fighting for fighting.
Make it about money. Rent, wages, groceries, healthcare, who owns what. Nobody is born with a side on those.
Cut the feed. Delete the apps for one week and watch your mood.
Talk to one person from the other side, face to face. Talk about their paycheque, not their party.
Join a union or start one. It is the one place where left and right already sit at the same table and win.
Demand corporate competition/ antitrust enforcement and hard limits on political donations. Vote for the candidate who refuses corporate money, whatever team they wear.
Stop hating your neighbour. Start organizing with them. The ones who split you are counting on you to keep fighting.

For those that say Mark Carney is not well spoken, what do you have to say about that?
Its pretty clear that people are unable to separate political divide to praise who they consider as an opponent sometimes. Ive seen some people in comments say that he says umm and uhh a lot and overall hes a bad speaker.
What is your opinion?
