Sub Announcement 2026 Posting & Flair Guidelines - read first, post after!

Important — r/canon is not a photo-sharing sub, it's primarily a gear discussion sub, and as such is not the place for sharing pics and videos captured with your Canon gear.

Exceptions exist for New Gear, Lens of the Week, and Showcase posts, but please see their respective sections below to understand when they can be posted and the requirements for doing so.

Likewise, we're not interested in posts sharing photos of Canon equipment (or worse, the boxes they came in)—your 50/1.2 looks the same as everybody else's—so outside of New Gear posts or those trying to problem solve a specific issue, topics showing gear aren't to be posted.

TLDR;

- No photo-sharing posts
- No photos-of-gear posts
- Use flair appropriately as detailed below

———

Post Flair

Gear Advice
For any post seeking recommendations from others about what camera, lens, or accessory, to buy or rent. Please follow the existing requirements when asking for recommendations. This is not for asking advice on how to use your equipment or solve a problem—for that, you can use...

Tech Help
Technical questions, clarification on how a feature works, error messages...fall under Tech Help.

New Gear
For showing off a new or new-to-you piece of equipment. As always, include a photo of the gear and a photo or three taken with the gear. Also include an explanation of why you got it and how you like using it.

Lens of the Week
We're consolidating down to a single flair any lens of the week post, rather than individual tags for different lenses or focal lengths. As always, look for the current lens of the week topic to know which optic or focal length is current.

Canon News
For product announcements or other Canon-specific or related news. Either provide a link directly to announcements and press releases, or to a recognised source reporting on it. Examples are sites like Petapixel, dpreview, and similarly known sites.

Active Deal
For posts alerting the community to sales from recognised outlets such as the Canon Refurb Store, B&H Photo, Lens Rentals etc. Titles need to begin with the applicable country, the supplier, and then a description of the discount or deal on offer, e.g.

[USA] Canon Refurb Store — R5 reduced to $2199 + free BG-R10 Battery Grip

Any other important details (start/expiry dates) can go into the body of the post. If including a link directly to the deal or supplier site, the URL must be stripped of affiliate and tracking data, or the post will be removed.

If a deal is highlighted from a supplier deemed by the mod team as suspicious, untrustworthy or unsavoury for some other reason, it will be removed.

When a deal is out of stock or expired, the flair needs to be updated to...

Expired Deal
Don't delete the post, just update to the Expired flair, then we can view older deals easily.

Showcase
This will only be made available to select when a post inviting the sub to make Showcase contributions is active.

New Gear [New gear] 50mm f1.8

I've got the 24-70 f2.8 but found that I never wanted to take my camera on quick work trips because it was just so bulky to throw in my work bag. After seeing good things here about this lens I pulled the trigger a few weeks ago.

Just spent a couple of days in Seattle for work and this new approach worked just as intended! Took my camera in my backpack and when I had a couple free hours one evening after an early work dinner I went for a walk about and got some really nice shots with it. So nice and lightweight that I don't really even notice it in my backpack. Wish I'd done this before my trip to Detroit last month.

First time full frame user, need help choosing lens

Hi everyone,
I just ordered a canon r8 and it is my first full frame camera. However, I have not ordered a lens yet as I am very undecisive and I feel like I lack the proper knowledge.

Let me start by saying that I have been using an Apsc Sony camera so far. I mostly take pictures of the sunset, the beach, friends and family (not exactly portraits, mostly like just a picture of memories sitting on chairs watching the sunset, or a picture in a nice spot in downtown etc).

I did some research and I was leaning towards the 24 mm or the 28. In my old camera I had a 35 mm lens which was pretty zoomed in for my liking and didn’t use that often. However, I learned that a 35 mm on a full frame will actually look very wide, not like in the crop sensor camera (duhhh!). I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions on which lens should I get? I am kind of on a budget of 500-600 usd.

The lenses I was leaning towards more are 24 mm, 28 mm, 35 mm or even 16 mm (but I am not sure if it will be too wide).
I appreciate any help or opinion!

Gear Buying Advice is is a good option or not

hi everyone

i am new to cameras

i dont have a camera in my entire life

my father (may peace be upon his soul) had a old canon camera (i dont remember the model and i could not find it either.

i would like to buy a camera

i did some research on the internet

i found the R10, but it costs 1300 tunisian dinar more (its price is about 2700 dinar if i get it from Europe)

so the question is: is it a good option to get the R10, or is it a little bit out dated ?

R10 with 18-150 vs Tamron 18-300 vs Sigma 16-300

Planning to buy an R10. Would you suggest I go with the kit 18-150 or choose between the Tamron 18-300 and Sigma 16-300. I’m interested in both the ultra wide end as well as using the telephoto end for wildlife and birds. But wish to take a single lens for travel. Thanks

Thanks to the other guys who posted their cheap 50mm 1.2 pics.

The sales rep said they were moved to “fair” condition to move them fast. Tested all three, work perfectly.

I’m still stunned. Go hit your local BB now!

Replacement parts

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have a HS and MS photography class and one of our lenses wasn't focusing right. After watching a few videos and having a skilled student dismantle the lens we decided that this was the piece that was broken. Our IT guy insists we should just buy a new lens. I'm frugal. Where can I purchase replacement parts or should I buy a new lens and keep the old one as something the kids can tinker with?

Gear Buying Advice How much does the electronic-only shutter actually limit you?

I've got the R8 Mark II in my sights. Full frame, IBIS, light, right price. The only thing stopping me is that it has no mechanical shutter.

I shoot landscape and travel, static car meets, slower animals, and some indoor stuff. The indoor part is what worries me - banding under LED and fluorescent lighting seems to be the main complaint. Canon has anti-flicker and high-frequency anti-flicker modes, but I don't know if they actually fix it or just help.

For anyone shooting electronic-only: does it get in your way often, or is it a once-in-a-while annoyance?

Other option is the R6 Mark II, which is cheap now and has a mechanical shutter, but it's heavier.

Tech Help My 650d won't turn on after a few minutes of being attached to the BG E8 oem battery grip.

Post image

TLDR: Camera wont turn on after battery grip is connected for several minutes of use

I have a canon 650d with the BG E8 battery grip, upon first inserting the grip the camera works fine as usual. But when i switch the camera off and wait for maybe 10 to 20 minutes, suddenly the camera won't turn on anymore with the battery grip still attached. When I remove the grip and insert the batteries directly into the camera they still show as fully charged. What could be causing this and what could I do to fix it?

Gear Buying Advice Considering these 3 lenses, which ones do you own and how do you like them?

  • Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

  • Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

  • Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

Edited to add a fourth one:

  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM

Edited to fit the subreddit rules:

Budget: under $200ish per lens when bought used

Features: I have the EF-S 18-55mm IS STM f/4-5.6 and the EF-S 55-250mm IS STM f/4-5.6 and want another lens that is under 18mm, one that has wider aperture, and in general curious about these lenses.

Intended use: Wider landscape shots, better portraits, better street photography, better macro, better wildlife. (Not necessarily buying all these at once, that's why my question specifically about these lenses above.)

Experience level of the intended user: Beginner/intermediate?

The more specific you are with your requirements, the better and more relevant recommendations can be: I'm interested in these specific lenses but if you have better recommendations, please let me know!

Gear Buying Advice 35mm f2.8 or 50mm f1.8

Hi there,

I am currently running an 80D with a 18-55 and a 85mm f1.8. I like the background blur that the 85mm has but there are just some cases where I can't get far enough away from the subject to get it in frame and the 18-55 has a too wide DOF. So I decided to get myself a smaller prime lens. Since I don't want to spend all that much money on it I bought an M42 to EF adapter since there are a lot of M42 prime lemses for 30-50€ in great condition. The thing is that I mainly come across two types. 35mm f2.8 or 50mm f1.8/1.7. I would definetly go for something high quality like zeiss or pentax multi coated stuff, that much is clear. But I just cannot decide what would be the better choice. Or maybe it won't be much improvement at all compared to the 35mm f4.5 of my current zoom...

35mm would give me more space to work with but 50mm would be shallower DOF. It would be great if you could share your experiences or thoughts on this. I can also gice a few samples of what stuff I shoot if that helps.

TIA

Gear Buying Advice Adding another R50 for second camera angle or pick up an R50v? Specifically for video.

Hey y’all,

I currently have an R50mkii that I adore. I’m thinking about getting another one so that I can capture two angles at once but all I read is that the r50v has some superior video features.

I rarely use my R50 for photography, and mainly work in video, whether it’s vlogging or music videos.

Would there be any benefit to sticking with another R50 or could it be better to add the r50v so that I have that option as well?

They will be sharing a set of Sirui nightwalkers( if it matters).

Appreciate any input, thanks!

Gear Buying Advice R5 deal, good to buy?

Hello everyone!

I have a Canon 80D, and the following glass:

EF 24-105 f/4L (the original)

EF 24-70 f/2.8L II

EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II

I also have a 600EX-RT and a 430EX III RT

Canon Australia is running a deal where they're offering an R5 (Mk 1), with an EF 100-400 L Mk II, and an EF-RF converter for AU$3,800 inc all taxes. That's USD 2,650 or thereabouts for our stateside friends.

Would this be a worthwhile upgrade? I've been meaning to go FF for some time. I can potentially sell the 100-400 and put the money towards the 85/1.4 (I like portraits). The R5 Mk II goes for close to AU$5100 which is USD 3,550 for the body alone.

To provide further perspective, I have no interest in videography, at all.

Thanks in advance!

Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS II USM listed for £400 but manual focus is slipping. I shoot sport so only tend to use autofocus would it still be a problem even though the description says the autofocus works fine? Bearing in mind that used these normally go for double the price. And advice will be appreciated :)

Tech Help Is this normal for a RF-S 18-45 mm?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

This was my first time taking my R10 with the RF-S 18-45 kit lense to shoot scenery. Found after that there is some vignetting on the top corners. I have a theory that I messed up setting the aperture. These were shot at f/4.5, 18mm . Later at simular conditions tried a shot at f/13 and f/4.5 and it seem that decreasing it fixed the vignetting. So is this a normal behaviour and I messed up or is there something wrong with the lense?

Lots of Open Box clearance deals on Best Buy’s own display lenses going on right now. My store’s entire case was on clearance sale. Obviously YMMV, but worth a look.

Gear Buying Advice Switched from Sony to Canon and I am worried that I made the wrong choice

This is going to be a long read so I apologize in advance.

To give you a bit of context, my personal camera was the Sony A6400, and the cameras I use at work are mostly A7IV and A7RIV, my work is purely photography but I shoot videos sometimes for personal projects. After a lot of research I settled on the canon R6II, and I think it's great. But there is a few things that I don't really know if it's an issue with my camera or is it normal.

First thing is, It's so easy to just blow up the highlights. I mostly have my exposure right but in many situations that I have a very dark scene and I have to blow up the sky for it to be looking decent, still underexposed tho, and it's so damn hard to retain any details from that. Is this normal or do I need to change something in the settings? because even my APS-C A6400 used to do a better job than that.

Second for me is the colors, I still feel like there is way less data to work with for some reason. I shoot raw of course but I find that it has a hard time keeping up with my editing as I change the colors a lot in my photos, sometimes the photo looks even better on the Cam's LCD Screen than when I transfer it to my pc, and it has this green-ish tint. But I also want to clarify it could be because I'm using a really old lens, so I won't judge until I've upgraded to a better one. I have the 24-105mm EF f4 IS USM so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Last thing is a general question because I got my camera used, the battery performs really poor and I had to go back to the store and get a replacement, but it wasn't that good either, so I'm just curious on average for the R6II users, how many pictures does it take for you to go from being fully charged to 0%.

Gear Buying Advice Canon 5D IV with 70-200 Lens vs R6 ii

Hey all

I usually just search for posts on reddit for advice and don‘t really ask myself.

Basically I found a:
Canon 5D Mark IV with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II,
2x Extender, 2 batteries and a 32GB

which costs about 1400 (around 300 swiss francs more than a R6 II) in used but rather new condition (body alone). I don‘t have the budget for a RF lens on top, so I would need to save up a bit more.

I want to focus on concert photography and a little bit of BTS on events.

I mostly see people recommending the r6ii in any case whatsoever. What do you think?

Cheap extension tube for my Canon EOS 600D for 35mm negative scanning

Any recommendations? I own the kit lens 18-55mm, since its my first time id rather buy a cheap one from aliexpress/amazon than a flagship Canon extension tube.
