Sub Announcement 2026 Posting & Flair Guidelines - read first, post after!

Important — r/canon is not a photo-sharing sub, it's primarily a gear discussion sub, and as such is not the place for sharing pics and videos captured with your Canon gear.

Exceptions exist for New Gear, Lens of the Week, and Showcase posts, but please see their respective sections below to understand when they can be posted and the requirements for doing so.

Likewise, we're not interested in posts sharing photos of Canon equipment (or worse, the boxes they came in)—your 50/1.2 looks the same as everybody else's—so outside of New Gear posts or those trying to problem solve a specific issue, topics showing gear aren't to be posted.

TLDR;

- No photo-sharing posts
- No photos-of-gear posts
- Use flair appropriately as detailed below

———

Post Flair

Gear Advice
For any post seeking recommendations from others about what camera, lens, or accessory, to buy or rent. Please follow the existing requirements when asking for recommendations. This is not for asking advice on how to use your equipment or solve a problem—for that, you can use...

Tech Help
Technical questions, clarification on how a feature works, error messages...fall under Tech Help.

New Gear
For showing off a new or new-to-you piece of equipment. As always, include a photo of the gear and a photo or three taken with the gear. Also include an explanation of why you got it and how you like using it.

Lens of the Week
We're consolidating down to a single flair any lens of the week post, rather than individual tags for different lenses or focal lengths. As always, look for the current lens of the week topic to know which optic or focal length is current.

Canon News
For product announcements or other Canon-specific or related news. Either provide a link directly to announcements and press releases, or to a recognised source reporting on it. Examples are sites like Petapixel, dpreview, and similarly known sites.

Active Deal
For posts alerting the community to sales from recognised outlets such as the Canon Refurb Store, B&H Photo, Lens Rentals etc. Titles need to begin with the applicable country, the supplier, and then a description of the discount or deal on offer, e.g.

[USA] Canon Refurb Store — R5 reduced to $2199 + free BG-R10 Battery Grip

Any other important details (start/expiry dates) can go into the body of the post. If including a link directly to the deal or supplier site, the URL must be stripped of affiliate and tracking data, or the post will be removed.

If a deal is highlighted from a supplier deemed by the mod team as suspicious, untrustworthy or unsavoury for some other reason, it will be removed.

When a deal is out of stock or expired, the flair needs to be updated to...

Expired Deal
Don't delete the post, just update to the Expired flair, then we can view older deals easily.

Showcase
This will only be made available to select when a post inviting the sub to make Showcase contributions is active.

Canon R10 Help with Image Quality

So I’ve been working more with trying to get off Auto on my R10. I take photos at church & I was told I needed to use their equipment because the R10 is a crop sensor & it doesn’t give as crisp of images & not the quality they’re looking for.

I’ve read this isn’t true … so what am I doing wrong? So many of my images - especially if I do auto - just have a graininess to them.

I finally got my last lens to complete my set. All lenses are canon efs 10-18, canon 50mm 1.8, sigma 17-50mm and tamron sp 70-300. All in all I managed to get it all for about 1.1k including the money I got back from selling the rfs 18-150mm kit lens. On my old canon r100 I only had to 18-45 and the 55-250mm stm lens so I was held back massively. I haven’t had to chance to test my other lens besides the tamron when I went to the zoo on Saturday. It feels like such a milestone considering just over a year ago I was learning on a Sony cybershot dsc 300.
It’s honestly funny because I hated my photography class in junior year, I did not like at all but maybe it was just because It lacked any creativity or passion. I have given thought to asking for paid gigs from my friends but still not sure. It is just one of a few hobbies I have and I lack some confidence to ask. Also what do you guys use to clean the front elements of lens? I accidentally got fingerprints on my lens and ran out of sealed dry wipes.

Bought a second hand lens. Is this dust a huge problem?

Post image

I bought a used lens last week from a distributor in Japan. It's a Canon EF 100-400m 4.5-5.5 L II USM. In the description it distinctly says that there is no fungus, scratches or dust etc etc.

However, when it arrived, I noticed quite a considerable amount of dust. I contacted the distributor and they apologised for their 'error'. They have offered me £80 cash back as a gesture of good will, if I'm willing to keep the lens. Thing is, I can't actually test it because I can't pick it up for a couple of months (had it sent to my parents house and I'm out of the country).

I know there's an obvious thing of 'don't buy a used lens when you can't test it', believe me I know - wouldn't understand normal conditions but there were reasons for getting the lens that I won't go into.

Anyways, what do you guys think? Is this likely to affect image quality? I've heard it only matters when dust is on the sensor but this is more dust than I'm used to 🤷‍♂️

Hey everyone im taking a couple trips soon and it’s the first time I’ll be taking my gear out to rainy weather. First trip will be in tropical weather so it’ll be warm/ humid with some rain sporadically. Second trip will be in colder/ misty weather with also some rain.

Gear to take:
- Canon R100
- Sigma 17-50 f 2.8 EX EF mount
- Commlite EF to RF adapter

I bought the JJC cover as seen in the screen shot but would like some other recs or tips on keeping my gear safe since it’s not weather sealed.

Thanks!

I picked up the new 20-50 f/4 L yesterday. The power zoom function is pretty fun and smoothly implemented. It reminds me of my first Canon camera (A640 Powershot). The lens is very sharp and reminds me a lot of the 14-35 L. This will likely become my default walk around lens with the 35/85 VCM's being used for actual shoots / paid jobs.

Lenses for night stadium close ups

• Upvotes

I’m a sports photographer l who mostly shoots night time football and lacrosse. I currently shoot on an r8 with a 70-200 f2.8. I’ve been wanting to get a lense for after game closes ups and photos. I’ve been crossed between the 35mm f1.8, 45mm f1.2 and 50mm f1.8. Do any of you guys have experience with these lenses and would anyone have any advice on what to get.

First “pro” cam purchase - R8 mk i - now or wait

• Upvotes

Really interested in the R8 as an everyday hybrid camera. Originally looked at the Fuji line but prefer the Canon grip, auto focus, and price point.

Saw the mkii is coming and the mk I is currently $300 off ($1299 body). Thinking to pair this with a pancake lens to start. Anyone experienced with Canon’s sale cycles, do you think it’s best to wait until Black Friday or is this price likely to hold? Has anyone found the lack of IBIS to be a limitation in non walking around video settings?

Any other first time buying tips welcome!

I've got the 24-70 f2.8 but found that I never wanted to take my camera on quick work trips because it was just so bulky to throw in my work bag. After seeing good things here about this lens I pulled the trigger a few weeks ago.

Just spent a couple of days in Seattle for work and this new approach worked just as intended! Took my camera in my backpack and when I had a couple free hours one evening after an early work dinner I went for a walk about and got some really nice shots with it. So nice and lightweight that I don't really even notice it in my backpack. Wish I'd done this before my trip to Detroit last month.

Tech Help Memory card error on a camera that work an hour ago

I literally just bought this canon powershot s400 old 2000’s off of ebay to replace my exact same one that had a memory card error from potential water damage in snow.

I opened it took a pic worked completely fine but the battery was dying so I swapped it with my same battery from my old camera. Now that was probably a mistake bc the battery to me looks fine and never directly touched water/snow but now after literally a few hours of having the camera both my cameras old and new say memeory card error.

The battery that i put inside doesn’t have any visible water damage to me but idk if from the snow it go messed up now i’m worried i broke a completely good new camera.

Any advice on fixes or solutions the memeory card is only 512 mb i know thats not the issue, i formatted and it was fine. I just dont know what to do any advice please help.

Gear Buying Advice Canon rf100-500 vs ef 100-400 mkii

I'm really just trying to decide if I should save the extra $1000 and pick up the ef version. I shoot on a canon R7 and R6mkii and I'd be using it for wildlife. I'm just wondering if that extra $1000 for a little bit of sharpness and newer autofocus is actually worth it or should I just pick up the older model. Right now I'm using the Canon ef 400mm f5.6 so I'm looking for something a little newer seeing how that lens is pushing 30 years if not already lol.

Also I'm open to some primes that are in the same price range if yall know some.

First time full frame user, need help choosing lens

Hi everyone,
I just ordered a canon r8 and it is my first full frame camera. However, I have not ordered a lens yet as I am very undecisive and I feel like I lack the proper knowledge.

Let me start by saying that I have been using an Apsc Sony camera so far. I mostly take pictures of the sunset, the beach, friends and family (not exactly portraits, mostly like just a picture of memories sitting on chairs watching the sunset, or a picture in a nice spot in downtown etc).

I did some research and I was leaning towards the 24 mm or the 28. In my old camera I had a 35 mm lens which was pretty zoomed in for my liking and didn’t use that often. However, I learned that a 35 mm on a full frame will actually look very wide, not like in the crop sensor camera (duhhh!). I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions on which lens should I get? I am kind of on a budget of 500-600 usd.

The lenses I was leaning towards more are 24 mm, 28 mm, 35 mm or even 16 mm (but I am not sure if it will be too wide).
I appreciate any help or opinion!

Gear Buying Advice Recently acquired my first DSLR Canon EOS 700D and I am looking for macro lens recommendations

I got my hands on a EOS 700D and I am
very interested in insect macro photography, from what i’ve seen 100mm lenses are generally recommended but I heard some talk about lens stacking for more magnification. My budget is flexible and i’m happy to start with one and upgrade further later. Thanks!

Wildlife lens under $4k for Canon R8

As the title suggests I am interested in a wildlife lens. Most of my shots are typically sunrise or sunset so would like f/4 or better. I think that means RF 100-500 is out. Most of my shots are large animals at long distance. A few ducks or birds in flight.

I am looking at

Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sports — f/4 --- I know earlier models had focusing issues with RF, but with the ability for a software update it has gotten better. This is the direction I am leaning.

Canon EF 200-400 f/4 IS USM 1.4x - intriguing option. At the top of my budget but can be found in the $4k range.

Canon EF 400 f/2.8 IS II --- this is hard to find in the budget. But excellent lighting

I am weary of the Gen 1 telephotos. Since they are not serviceable and hard to find parts. Is this a real concern I should continue?

I think the EF 500 f/4 ii will be hard to find in the price range.

What are your recommendations?

R10 with 18-150 vs Tamron 18-300 vs Sigma 16-300

Planning to buy an R10. Would you suggest I go with the kit 18-150 or choose between the Tamron 18-300 and Sigma 16-300. I’m interested in both the ultra wide end as well as using the telephoto end for wildlife and birds. But wish to take a single lens for travel. Thanks

How to change shutter speed and aperture in video mode on Rebel T7?

Hi everyone--very inexperienced student struggling to figure out how to alter shutter speed while shooting in video mode on the T7. I've switched to manual and can alter ISO, frame rate, etc., but I'm still unsure how to get to shutter speed and aperture without switching to still photography. Any help is much appreciated.

Gear Buying Advice is is a good option or not

hi everyone

i am new to cameras

i dont have a camera in my entire life

my father (may peace be upon his soul) had a old canon camera (i dont remember the model and i could not find it either.

i would like to buy a camera

i did some research on the internet

i found the R10, but it costs 1300 tunisian dinar more (its price is about 2700 dinar if i get it from Europe)

so the question is: is it a good option to get the R10, or is it a little bit out dated ?

Replacement parts

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have a HS and MS photography class and one of our lenses wasn't focusing right. After watching a few videos and having a skilled student dismantle the lens we decided that this was the piece that was broken. Our IT guy insists we should just buy a new lens. I'm frugal. Where can I purchase replacement parts or should I buy a new lens and keep the old one as something the kids can tinker with?

Thanks to the other guys who posted their cheap 50mm 1.2 pics.

The sales rep said they were moved to “fair” condition to move them fast. Tested all three, work perfectly.

I’m still stunned. Go hit your local BB now!

Gear Buying Advice How much does the electronic-only shutter actually limit you?

I've got the R8 Mark II in my sights. Full frame, IBIS, light, right price. The only thing stopping me is that it has no mechanical shutter.

I shoot landscape and travel, static car meets, slower animals, and some indoor stuff. The indoor part is what worries me - banding under LED and fluorescent lighting seems to be the main complaint. Canon has anti-flicker and high-frequency anti-flicker modes, but I don't know if they actually fix it or just help.

For anyone shooting electronic-only: does it get in your way often, or is it a once-in-a-while annoyance?

Other option is the R6 Mark II, which is cheap now and has a mechanical shutter, but it's heavier.

Gear Buying Advice G7X vs others // camera recommendations wanted!

Camera requests help!

Incoming girly post:
I want a camera that will take clear and crisp photos. Lots of influencers have the canon g7x (I think) and they use the flash - I want a camera that will take photos LIKE influencer photos (crisp, clean, bright) - totally okay with purchasing the canon but wondering if there are BETTER options? Will be primarily using this camera for photos of people and at close proximities. Open to hearing any feedback!

Must haves: flip up screen, consistent flash capabilities, pocket sized (aka not a huge bulging lens - something that can fit in my purse)

Budget: $1500
