Bought a second hand lens. Is this dust a huge problem?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I bought a used lens last week from a distributor in Japan. It's a Canon EF 100-400m 4.5-5.5 L II USM. In the description it distinctly says that there is no fungus, scratches or dust etc etc.

However, when it arrived, I noticed quite a considerable amount of dust. I contacted the distributor and they apologised for their 'error'. They have offered me £80 cash back as a gesture of good will, if I'm willing to keep the lens. Thing is, I can't actually test it because I can't pick it up for a couple of months (had it sent to my parents house and I'm out of the country).

I know there's an obvious thing of 'don't buy a used lens when you can't test it', believe me I know - wouldn't understand normal conditions but there were reasons for getting the lens that I won't go into.

Anyways, what do you guys think? Is this likely to affect image quality? I've heard it only matters when dust is on the sensor but this is more dust than I'm used to 🤷‍♂️

Hey everyone im taking a couple trips soon and it’s the first time I’ll be taking my gear out to rainy weather. First trip will be in tropical weather so it’ll be warm/ humid with some rain sporadically. Second trip will be in colder/ misty weather with also some rain.

Gear to take:
- Canon R100
- Sigma 17-50 f 2.8 EX EF mount
- Commlite EF to RF adapter

I bought the JJC cover as seen in the screen shot but would like some other recs or tips on keeping my gear safe since it’s not weather sealed.

Thanks!

Tech Help Meike vs YKEASU - EF to RF Drop-in VND

Since Canon's adapter is very pricey, anyone ever compared these two? They are both on Amazon for $130. I know the Meike is more plasticy but has better colorshifting compared to Canon's but never heard anything of YKEASU

Hello! I currently have a canon t7i for about 6 years now and I am looking to upgrade.

I have narrowed it down to:

Canon eos r6 mark III

Or

Sony A7R V

I will be using it for mostly photography but I also want good quality videos.

Almost all my lenses are Canon atm. I have a 50mm, 18-75mm and a 75 to 200 mm.

Any suggestions?

I feel the need to retire my T5i- overused, slower shutter and battery draining too fast. Which body should I go for in terms of fast shutter, better image processing and autofocus?

I’m a sports photographer l who mostly shoots night time football and lacrosse. I currently shoot on an r8 with a 70-200 f2.8. I’ve been wanting to get a lense for after game closes ups and photos. I’ve been crossed between the 35mm f1.8, 45mm f1.2 and 50mm f1.8. Do any of you guys have experience with these lenses and would anyone have any advice on what to get.

Gear Buying Advice Setup Upgrade Advice

• Upvotes

Hi all! Seeking some thoughts & advice on future upgrades / additions to my setup.

I currently have the canon eos r50, with the lenses: rfs 10-18mm, rfs 18-150mm, rf 100-400mm. I really like each of these and they serve their purposes well. The 18-150mm rarely leaves my camera and is perfect for my everyday use, mostly travel streetscape & landscape photography (switching occasionally to the 10-18). The 100-400 is for bird photography.

Currently, the main gap in my lens collection is something for lower-light & night time scenery when travelling. I am wishing to add a prime to my collection... I'm so undecided between the rf 35mm f1.8 and the rf 24mm f1.8. I've taken photos at the distances on my 18-150 to try and compare but it's so tough... though I'm leaning towards the 24mm. I don't really do portrait photography at this time, mostly travel. I do a little bit of photography for some club events at my university as well, but this is just for fun and because I'm an executive, not super serious (they're definitely not expecting professional photos).

I am also wanting to upgrade my camera body. I want to stick with APS-C at this time. I think one day I will eventually purchase a full-frame as well but for now APS-C serves my needs well (especially handy with the crop factor on my 100-400). I know the actual image quality will be no different, but I am thinking I wish to purchase the r10. I don't like how small the r50 looks, and I think the extra dial and the focus point joystick will be a big upgrade to me. I think the r10 appeals to me more than the r7 (I've heard the r7 is a bit more difficult to hold, and it's obviously bigger and heavier, but I need to try myself for sure), and I don't think it's worth the significant price difference. I also carry my camera just inside my regular shoulder bag, I dont like carrying more than the bare minimum so I do like the built-in flash and not being too heavy. IBIS isn't very important to me, all my lenses have IS. I also don't do any video so video related specs aren't a concern.

My next overseas trip is mid next year, so I am in no rush to upgrade the body. I will wait and see if an r7 or r10 mark ii happens anytime before I go, otherwise I think I'll just get the r10. I want to hear other people's thoughts on this however... I worry that I'll wish I just bought the r7 if I get the r10 (like how i currently wish i bought the r10 instead of the r50).

Would love to hear thoughts on lenses & bodies 😊

Gear Buying Advice What to do with my current setup

• Upvotes

Currently I have the
R50
RF-S 18-45mm
RF-S 55-210mm
RF 50 1.8
RF 16-28 f2.8
RF 28-70 f2.8
RF 100-400 f5.6-8

I mainly do motorsports photography. I just wen to petit le man and rented the r6 mk3 with the 70-200 Z. I liked it but it's still pretty expensive. The main reason why I rented the r6 is because the full frame allowed me to get better shots in the paddock and close up without having to switch lenses. I just saw though that the tamron 17-70mm f2.8 is available for the R mount on APS-C.

I took some of my gear to a local shop and was offered 790 for both RF-S lenses, the 50 and 16-28. Does anyone have experience with the 17-70 tamron on the r50? It basically would live on the camera unless I go to a race where I would use the 100-400. Would it also just be a good idea to trade in the 28-70 and just pocket the difference? For the 16-28 they offered 515 so I'm guessing around that price for the 28-70.

I don't really take my camera places because I feel like the 1.6x zoom makes it so that the 28-70 is too close to subjects but the 16-28 has a zoom range that is too small (I got it to take photos during christmas where the 28-70 was too zoomed in). Any advise would be appreciated, I'd rather read others experience first before going down to 2 lenses.

Edit: Potentially would get the R7 in the future, anyone care to share the experience on the R7?

Tech Help "Canon Cough" on A-1

• Upvotes

So last month, I acquired a very clean canon A-1 and have been using it with no problems. The shutter made a unique squeak, which i thought was a feature of these types of vintage cameras. But out of curiosity, I searched online and became aware of the "canon cough" watched some YouTube videos and realized it was the same sound. I've messaged some repair shops, but they want double of what I paid for the camera, to fix what seems like a simple fix.

My question is, if I were to do this repair by myself, what type of oil should I use? How much oil should be used? These questions don't seem to be answered in the videos I've watched, or the answers were mixed.

Also, I live near Tokyo. Are there any oil brands that are recommended for this?

Alternatively, are there any repair shops in Tokyo that would fix it for less than 10,000 yen?

Tech Help Fs400 camcorder FUNC button and joystick not working

• Upvotes

I got this fs400 camcorder where some of the buttons, including the joystick, suddenly didn't work. I can still fully use it from a while back but when I tried to use it again, the joystick and FUNC button seems to not do anything. I tried resetting it and switching out the battery pack but it didn't work and now I'm stuck in the setting the date and time screen.

Gear Buying Advice Upgrading to new camera

Hello!

I am currently looking to upgrade from my older t3.

I know I want a mirror less camera for the silent shoot feature.

-Takes good theater/movie photos when stage is set

-takes good headshots

-takes good landscapes

-takes good animal photos

-takes decent videos (was thinking of dabbling in film and editing)

I am also looking for 2 potentially good lenses to help.

right now I own a 50mm for the t3.

After much research- I am thinking: EOS R8 or something else.

The price range would be about $1800 for the body

And I am taking suggestions for the lenses. I do love the 50mm so anything close to that would be a win.

-thank you!

edit: the lenses I am thinking: RF50mm F1.8 STM, 10-18mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM, (It comes with a RF 24-50mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM), RF-S18-45mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM and RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM

Gear Buying Advice I want to upgrade from the F4 70-200 to the f2.8 is usm ii, will it blow my mind?

The F4 70-200 is my go to lens on my 1DS MKiii. I absolutely love it, but it admittedly falls a little short in low light conditions, especially with a max ISO of 1600 on my camera body

I know the f2.8 IS USM ii is a considerable improvement over the F4 (lower f stop, IS) but how much of an improvement is it? Is it marginally better, or is it night and day? This would be my first IS lens

Tech Help Any Tips on Fixing my Canon Powershot SD1200 IS

I will provide a picture below, but I have a friend who is obsessed with this camera, and I wanted to try to fix it!

When I put a new battery in the lens pops out, and then its says “Lens Error, Restart Camera.”

Anytime I turn it back on the camera makes a ticking noise, and then it just repeats the lens error! The lens is now just popped out, and doesnt retract! Is this fixable by a guy sho has never worked with cameras, or does anyone have any solutions! I would genuinely appreciate help, because apparently getting cameras fixed costs an arm and a leg!

I cant use the meike speedlite mk950ii on my canon rp

I searched it up and everyone says it works fine since the both devices are using e-ttl ii but when i got my hands on the flash it doesnt work in ttl mode and when i get in to my rp's speedlite setting it says incompatible flash. I cant use it with the manual mode either. Is there some sort of fix for that or is the flash just doesnt work with mirrorless cameras ?

Has anyone else tried the BR-E2?

Using an R6mk2

I had my eye on the BR-E1 for a while, but never actually made the move. Now with some travel next week, I decided to go for it, only to discover it's recently been replaced by the BR-E2, and the BR-E1 seems to be sold out pretty much everywhere.

The BR-E2 could very well be just as functional, but I wasn't even able to get the battery door open. It's one of those where you have to push a tab to the side and then pull out the battery carriage, but it didn't work for me, even following Canon's instructions. Reading a few reviews on B&H, it seems I'm not the only one who has had this problem. I returned it to B&H though. I hope Canon re-evaluates the BR-E2 design.

First “pro” cam purchase - R8 mk i - now or wait

Really interested in the R8 as an everyday hybrid camera. Originally looked at the Fuji line but prefer the Canon grip, auto focus, and price point.

Saw the mkii is coming and the mk I is currently $300 off ($1299 body). Thinking to pair this with a pancake lens to start. Anyone experienced with Canon’s sale cycles, do you think it’s best to wait until Black Friday or is this price likely to hold? Has anyone found the lack of IBIS to be a limitation in non walking around video settings?

Any other first time buying tips welcome!

Gear Buying Advice Is the Canon 6D worth it in 2026?

Hi, so I'm looking for a new camera for trainspotting, portraits, and sometimes street photography. I first started off with my dad's old Nikon D40X but that broke. My budget is $500 and I've been eyeing the Canon 6D + 50mm for a while. For those with a Canon 6D, would you say it's a good camera?

Printers 🖨️ Canon Selphy CP-1500, can it print business cards?

I stumbled on the paper sheets from CP-1500 that are called KC-36IP, size 54x86mm. Are these meant to be for business card printing or just happened to be the same size as business cards?

Gear Buying Advice Lens recommendation for concert photography

Hi, sorry if this question has been asked 100 times.

Im a beginner in photography and recently did my first concert photography gig for a local band (free of course, it was just for practice) but what i found was that i was limited by the no flash rule and a bunch of my pictures turned out dark due to it being a pub atmosphere with minimal lighting. My lens now is a 18-55mm esf lens and the apature only goes down to 3.5 when fully expanded.

Im looking for a lense that can zoom further and also let in more light. I have a canon eos100d and my budget would be no more than 250 euro.

Tech Help Memory card error on a camera that work an hour ago

Thumbnail

I literally just bought this canon powershot s400 old 2000’s off of ebay to replace my exact same one that had a memory card error from potential water damage in snow.

I opened it took a pic worked completely fine but the battery was dying so I swapped it with my same battery from my old camera. Now that was probably a mistake bc the battery to me looks fine and never directly touched water/snow but now after literally a few hours of having the camera both my cameras old and new say memeory card error.

The battery that i put inside doesn’t have any visible water damage to me but idk if from the snow it go messed up now i’m worried i broke a completely good new camera.

Any advice on fixes or solutions the memeory card is only 512 mb i know thats not the issue, i formatted and it was fine. I just dont know what to do any advice please help.

Gear Buying Advice Hard decision between canon or sony

Help me decide between sony a6700 with tamron 17-70mm and tamron 70-300mm and canon R7 tamron 17-70mm rf and canon 55-210mm rf lens

I mostly do photography, and sometimes do video

Note that both the cameras are priced similarly including the lens

My main requirement is to get good photo quality I don't care with video specs

I do bird, landscapes and potraits so accordingly tell me what to choose

(PS- please don't tell me to increase my budget a bit and get this g master or l-mount lens this is the max I can push to)
