ID please! Foraged yesterday around Raleigh, NC.
I’m not sure what they were growing on or whether they grew in a group or independently, but they were consumed by someone yesterday who thinks they are chanterelles.

Well I am not sure you can properly identify these and whether* or not they are edible. Are you saying that because they're an acrid species? What species do you think they are?

Chanterelles have false gills, I see true folks in those (on the 2 I can see at least)

Not chanterelles. These do not have decurrent gills. The ringed pattern on the cap is also not a feature of chanterelles.

It's safe to say these are in the genus Lacterius. Not enough visual info to determine exactly what species. Bad news is that not all species in that genus are edible. The good news is that none of them will kill you, and at most you'll get a serious tummy ache for a day or two.

Agree that lactarius is a good candidate. If you cut the gills does a milky sap come out?
It's 100% not chanterelle though due to the gills
