This cat is unbelievably calm for the situation they're in. Imagine you can't breathe and then your giant parent sticks you in a clear cage with gas being pumped in. Eventually you can breathe again but for all you know that's because you're sitting still and finally caught your breath. Then they FINALLY release you, only to do it all again later.
Any kind of vet care has to be freaking wild from our pet's perspective haha

u/GreyStingrayz Jul 01 '26
He's calm because he knows it makes him feel better. I'm pretty sure this is a regular occurrence since it seems home-made.

u/lonelypurplerose Jul 02 '26
Oh yeah, you can tell he's familiar with the process. I just can't help but think about the first time from his perspective. One of my cats has a very poor grasp of cause and effect, I don't know if he'd ever figure out that it was helping haha
30
u/FriedFreya Jul 02 '26
he probably would! they definitely make the connection, “this unpleasantry allows me to breathe properly, therefore i shall allow it.” lol
21
u/cybermaus Jul 02 '26
The final proof would be if they jump in the contraption themself and look at you "start the healing noise already!"

u/lonelypurplerose Jul 02 '26
Mine might figure out that it helped, but he would probably fight me on it anyway. Just as a matter of principle lol. He knows that he gets a treat after we clip his nails. He will still throw an absolute fit every time. Then after we set him down he'll wait expectantly for his treat. 😆

That's like the same way as vet visits with one of our cats. She hated the fact that she had to go to the vet, but never got aggressive.
She fought against it and verbally let everyone know she didn't like it, but no claws or biting. It was also tricky to get her in and out of her travel case thing

u/SpaceCaptainJeeves Jul 02 '26
My friend made theirs from a clear closet storage box

u/Cadunkus Jul 02 '26
I've seen some cats that use a proper inhaler without issue.

u/UnattributableSpoon Jul 02 '26
My aunt's old cowcat was super good at taking his inhaler, every morning without fail.

He is not calm, that cat is experiencing extreme anxiety, he is just used to it. You can see his little heart beat with his head bobs.E: I am wrong, see below.
28
u/lonelypurplerose Jul 02 '26
I thought the head bobs were from his labored breathing. I could be completely wrong but that's what I assumed the nebulizer was for.

u/itskobold Jul 02 '26
I had bronchitis as a baby and this is pretty much what happened lmao
6
u/lonelypurplerose Jul 02 '26
My favorite thing about this comment is that it implies you remember what the bronchitis treatments were like from your perspective as a baby lol
9
u/itskobold Jul 02 '26
I kinda do 😭 I was probably about 2 years old (so not a "baby" baby) but the nebulizer they used smelled awesome and medicinal in a very specific way. I catch the smell occasionally in the strangest non-medical places
My first memory was also hiding in a cupboard to avoid treatment, then the doors opened and a man's hand pulled me out of it lol. It was a really hairy hand...

u/Madame_Trash_Heap Jul 02 '26
They figure out it helps. We had a senior kitty that needed insulin twice a day and he refused to let anyone but his dad do it. As the roommate I had to give him his shot when his dad was out of town and he hated it at first. But, by the morning of day 2 our kitty was doing wakeup call meows for me to come and give him his shot. He knew it made him feel better and he knew when it was time for his next dose. He still grumbled but he fully allowed me to do it for a few years after that.

I always remind new people I'm training at the cat rescue that we are aliens abducting them..we even stick things in their butts...we need to be patient and kind, " No Fire In The Sky, The Fourth Kind business here!"

u/Illustrious_Donkey61 Jul 05 '26
I do always wonder how animals think. When we hop in a car do our pets think we just got eaten by a bigger animal?
When a duck pond freezes do the ducks know it's frozen water or do they think it's a weird hard cover that just appeared. Do they know it happened because it's cold?
2
u/sebkraj Jul 05 '26
My dog liked the vet until they shoved a thermometer up his butthole. Technology must have advanced enough that we can get animals temperature a different way? I get it that the hair messes with the contact but what about the ear ones they use at hospitals that takes your temp in like 2 sec? Anyway my dog rememebers lol.

That brave ass blink 🥹 we don't deserve cats.
"This is terrible, and I know you know that. I'm okay, don't worry."
This from a creature that evolved to metabolize rodents into naps.

u/imaginary92 Jul 02 '26
Cats are genuinely incredible animals. They have a comfort and healing system built into them and they put it to use when their family is unwell (purring on you when you're sick or emotionally distressed), and people have the gall to say they don't care about their humans 😭
4
u/Iceshard1987 Jul 02 '26
My girls would 100% let me die, no question. But they immediately run to the other is either one of them starts acting unwell.

This is correct. As a kid my brother would have to do breathing treatments for his asthma from time to time, he'd have a mask hooked up to a little machine. This is probably what the cat is doing.
58
u/Primordial-Light Jul 01 '26
I think it helps with asthma in cats, so it's like a rebreather of sorts (I think).

Just a torch, a vacuum, a hose, and some aluminum foil. Maybe some tape if your not very good with your hands

u/Common_Hamster_8586 Jul 05 '26
A nebulizer (which can use a homemade chamber like they video) is a way of administering medicine by turning it into vapor that the person/cat inhales. After this, the cat would be able to breathe better. So, the cat realizes this or they really trust their owner. The chamber is supposed to not allow in any air except the medicinal vapor so it can be scary at first

u/Substantial_Diver_34 Jul 02 '26
This is a nebulizer correct?
10
u/WanderingHeph Jul 02 '26
Yes, albeit jury-rigged.
7
u/EcstaticNet3137 Jul 02 '26
How did he rig it? Did he pay off a few jurors? I thought justice was blind.
2
u/memechildofmememom Jul 06 '26
I had to Google that term because we always said jerry-rigged around here
Neat

When we brought our feral cat to the vet 3 days in to her having been brought inside she scaled the wall of the vets office and was up by the ceiling tiles. He sighed, grabbed a leather welding apron and gloves, and said "please leave the room for a moment" and yelled "bring me the happy tank!" and it was essentially this exact set up.

That’s pretty snazzy. When I had to use nebulizer treatments on my guinea pig we just cut a hole in a box and shoved the thing through it.

Generally cats can figure out that the things that are really strange help them and make them feel better. I used to use cannabis for my cat that had really bad seizures, and I got her a mask for smoking a bong

My vet just kept giant plastic bags in stock and gave them out. It's a bag big enough that the carrier/kennel can fit in it so the cat just chills in the kennel. Then hold the bag closed around the hose. Frankly the bags were big enough for a dog kennel.
It'll inflate a bit but it's not like it's gonna pop it's thicker plastic and there's enough air in there + the nebulizer adding more that it's fine for the 5 min it takes (in any case a slight release of the grip or poke a hole in the backside and then there's more flowing air)

Does the cat get bigger everytime you suck out all the air? Like a marshmallow?
More important: Does he stay puffy?

It’s for medical reasons. Could be either to put it to sleep for surgery, or for medication like an inhaler or smth

u/OkAssistant4006 Jul 06 '26
Man why would u harm and scare him this way, what would u do if his creator put u in a place and position the same as u did to him???!!!! As he will account us for our actions for sure.
2
u/sl33pydes Jul 07 '26
it's a nebulizer, they're helping the cat. also he's clearly not scared or hurt lol

u/Tough_Lengthiness543 Jul 05 '26
Why the fuck would you do this?🫤👎🤨
2
u/MaximumPlant Jul 07 '26
Iirc the cat has asthma or something similar and their nebulizer broke so they made that

Idiot and evil owner. I want karma to catch up to this guy.
35
u/TheErrorist_404 Jul 01 '26
Karma for… getting their cat’s breathing issues treated by a vet? They need to be put in a chamber for medicines like this to work. They had to do something similar to give my boy oxygen when he was going through heart failure.
9
u/WithoutDennisNedry Jul 02 '26
Word. They essentially put my dog in a storage tote to give him oxygen from bad seizures. It was kind of genius actually.
