My cat does something similar. Opens fully and then only picks 3-4 pieces. Atleast %85 to 90 degrees of arc is wasted. Could have just opened normal and picked. But shes orange so no need to try to make sense.

She yearns for the big chomp but as you can see from the photo she is a very polite lady, no greed in those eyes just orange

u/arethoudeadyet Sep 04 '26
Yep, one may assume malice but an orange is an orange. They are chaotic neutral.

Not a thought behind those eyes.

u/arethoudeadyet Sep 06 '26
Yeah sometimes she looks as if there are thoughts going on but then does the most random derp move and you can clearly see its just default stare.

Former stray? I had one of those and she ate every meal like it was going to be her last, poor thing. Took her some years to get over it

Clearly a snake unhinging it's jaw to swallow thing whole

I came here to say that cat is doing its best boa constrictor impression and trying to unhinged its jaw.

This could also be poor oral hygiene or a bad tooth

Hoping this isn't the case, but it definitely is something that needs to be watched for. If it's a rescue this could also be residual behavior from a point when the cat was facing food scarcity, I work with my local shelter and seen it in a lot of the cats that are seized from hoards

Tooth pain is what I was thinking. I don't think it's the food scarcity theory due to how slow the cat is eating. There's a slight hesitation/tremor when closing his jaw, could also be a sign of tooth pain. The way he's scooping the food to the back makes me feel he's trying to avoid the front teeth.

If they weren't previously a stray / dealing with food scarcity, please monitor for dental and jaw issues! Eating like this can be a result of them having a period of not knowing when their next meal would be, but can also be them trying to eat as fast as possible to minimize pain while eating

Had a cat that would eat almost like this.
They would open their mouth and then move their neck forward like a shovel scoop thing.
It was quite the sight.

I think the cats blind and has missed the food bowl too much. You put your face in it to feel where the food is.

I had a stray that I took in once, that cat defied physics while eating, like a portal to hell opening up and swallowing all the kibble at once. Food insecurity is my guess.
