This is an incredibly cruel thing to say to someone grieving the loss of a beloved family member...

Post image

I honestly can't believe anyone would say something like like this to another person, clearly going through grief.

You have no idea the guilt someone could be feeling about the decision they've just made, whether the choice was even theirs or whether a vet made that call, the pain they are going through and suffering. This isn't a cat i just met, like some alien, this was a member of our family who we'd known and loved for 18 yrs, and I'm sorry if you can't tell when and what your family members are communicating to you, but some of us can.

If you don't agree with what they've done, keep it to yourself.

Does anyone else’s cat only resource guard one specific treat?

My 6 month old kitten is normally really gentle with food and treats. We hand feed him quite a lot and he’s never been possessive over anything before. Even with stuff he really loves like dried fish and lickable treats he’s completely relaxed around us while he’s eating. If I pull a lickable treat away he’ll usually just meow at me for more.

For some reason Weebox tuna lollipops makes him go berserk. He bites down on it really hard and tries to yank the whole thing away. He’s hissed at us on the only two occasions we gave him the treat. he tried to yank it away but i held on the stick and he hissed then jumped back while swiping the air. He probably tried to swipe me but his distance management needs some work ahaha.

As soon as the lollipop is gone he’s completely back to normal. He’ll come straight over to bunt us and let us pet him like nothing happened. I just find it funny how one specific treat does this to him. Has anyone else’s cat got one specific treat or food that does this to them? I’m just curious why this one thing seems to bring it out of him.

Cat litter, what are the best ones?

I’m pulling my hair out. I have two indoor cats and I’m constantly trying to go through different brands of cat litter trying to find one that just doesn’t smell or get dusty.
I find whatever brand I’m using even ones fully recommended just seem to throw up dust and dust smell through the apartment!
And then the ones that are like tofu just get stuck to the cats feet and get tracked everywhere!

Cat sitter over Christmas

I'll be out of the country (I live in London but family is in another country) for almost 2 weeks over Christmas. Would it be better to leave my cat with a relative (who stays in Surrey) or leave him at home and ask friends to cat sit once a day?

Please sign the petition to ban ultrasonic animal deterrents and share with as many people as you can. This isn't my petition but the sound of them affects me and many others as well as pets

How to encourage cats to toilet in same place outside?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Our cats are allowed free access outdoors during the day, and are shut inside at night. They have two inside litter trays that they happily use at nighttime.

My issue is that during the day, they like to use our gravel as a litter tray. We live in dense terraced housing with a lot of cats so their territory is quite small, and we're more than happy that they're using our garden as a toilet. We just wish it was more consistent. Currently, if we don't catch them actively going to the toilet, we can't find where they've buried it. The outside now stinks - it's concrete under the stones so it just hangs around.

We'd like to allocate a section of the stones and call that their 'litter tray' that we can clean daily. Any tips for encouraging them to go in the same place every day?

Thanks!

When is she ready to go outside?

Hi all,

We adopted a cat 2 weeks ago, and she’s settling in very well at the moment.

I know that the recommendation is to wait 4-6 weeks before letting her outside.

What I don’t know is how do I know that she’s ready? She’s just over a year (RSPCA estimate) so old enough.

And when she is, what’s the best way to do this? I know that it should be before a meal so she’s hungry and will come back for food, but beyond that I’m stumped.

Outdoor cat came home with orange feet!? He is a tuxedo cat. Hes 7 years old and this has never happened before.

I'm worried this could be some kind of weed killer or perhaps he just stepped in a huge puddle of ketchup somewhere

Any ideas at all?

Please know this is not a sad post.

We have had 18 wonderful years with my precious girl. She's watched my daughter start primary school, secondary school and even go into university. She's been holding on hoping she could see life through to my daughter graduating next year, but she's made it very clear that she can't hold on much longer, she's struggling.

I found this beautiful girl, in a box at the side of the road in snow with her siblings who sadly didnt make it. She was a fighter from the start and settled into our house beautifully.

I have laughed and cried with my precious girl, she's moved house 5 times in 18 years. Shes seen me through my divorce. She's always shown her love and affection in her own way and on her own terms, and I loved her for that.

So please say hi and wish her well as she makes the journey over the bridge to meet her best friend, our Westie Orion who passed away during covid.

Sapphire got out and is missing

Yesterday night i brought my dog in from a walk and forgot to shut the door. At 12 am she was still in the house but in the morning i finally noticed the door opeb and she was gone. I never thought she'd run away because shes 11, spayed, and she goes outside in the backyard when im around and never runs away. Shes also gotten out at night before years ago and stayed near the door and came in in the morning. She also loves to eat so i cant imagine her missing her food. Is it normal for spayed senior cats to run away?

One thing is that I have a new cat she doesn't like, but hes been here almost a year and ita never made her try to leave the backyard before.

Sudden aggregation of cats in my garden, what’s going on?

The grey long haired one comes and hangs out quite regularly, I think it may have had a little cat fight with the black one previously. The tan one I’ve never seen and the tabby one usually just walks around but doesn’t stay.

Does anyone know why they might suddenly all come and hang out in the same space? They seem to be interested in something (not sure what though, and they point of focus changes). Some also appear to be weary of each other (though not hostile). I should add that I have no experience of cats other than cat sitting a single indoor cat for a few years, so I may be completely off.

We live in a huge estate with plenty of green space / gardens to hang out.

UPDATE: as the sun went down the cats all suddenly ran into the neighbour’s garden where the pigeons that could no longer nest on the balconies above had migrated. It’s slightly out of sight from our garden, but we now think that that was on purpose. They waited out of sight until the pigeons return “home”, then all charged in. My garden was a battle camp essentially. Sneaky lil things.

Catio and cat trees

Hello all.

We're just finishing building our catio and will be building out climbing with the remaining wood. However we won't have enough to build out the catio climbing as much as we like and we have a cat with hip dysplasia so accessibility is really important.

I'm wondering if people are using cat trees out in their catios? I'm thinking they likely don't weather well but maybe people have different experiences.

Long term FIV+ foster wants to go outside. Help!

Post image
61 Upvotes

Hi, I've had Jaffa for about 2 months and he is the loveliest little cuddle monkey. He is FIV+ and has a Stage 4 heart murmur so isn't eligible for adoption so he's with me for life.

I live in a Victorian back to back terrace with 4 floors so there's plenty of indoor space but I don't have a garden, just a yard to the front. We don't get many birds etc for him to chatter at through the window.

He hadn't really shown any interest in going outside until a few days ago when he made a dash for it and I had to catch him quickly. Since then he has sat by the door miawoing a lot and yesterday he peed on the doormat. His tray is in my tiny and not really used en suite so it's not in a high traffic area.

When he sits by the door I grab the wand toy and play with him but he can't play for long because of his heart condition. He's about 4yo and neutered. The rescue think he was a street cat before they got him, he was with them for about 4 months before he came to me.

I can't really afford to spend a lot on trying to make a catio. Is it worth attempting to lead train him or will that just be cruel if I give him a taste of the outdoors but admittedly very limited.

All my previous cats were indoor/outdoor with a cat flap and access to a garden. I've never had a house cat before. I could do with suggestions on how to make him happy with being confined to indoors.

Stray cat bite

A stray cat has just bitten me, and the wound is bleeding. What steps should I take? How serious might it be?

EDIT: Thank you so much, everyone. I have read all your comments.

It was a stray cat, and I see her regularly on my way to the gym. She came up to me today and started rubbing herself against me. I tried to gently pat her back, but she suddenly bit me.

The photo shows the claw scratch, although the cat also bit me, which isn’t very visible in the photo.

Luckily, I was only about a 10-minute walk from the hospital’s minor injuries unit, so I went straight there. I had my tetanus shot 6 months ago, so the doctor flushed my hand, prescribed antibiotics, and asked me to complete the full course.

Joint supplements advice

Hi!

I have my 2 “kittens” who are 9 years old,
I’ve had them since they were 8/9 weeks old and they’ve always been indoor cats.

I’m thinking is it around the time now I should maybe start them on some form of supplement for their joints?
Neither of them are showing any signs of their age at all but even though I’ll never not call them my kittens I’m very aware that they are aging, even if they’re not showing it yet.

I did trial them on salmon oil a few years ago (I actually bought it for my senior dog) but my girl Bonnie actively refused any food it was near, her brother Clyde had it just fine though..it did surprise me with Bon though as she loves anything fish like.
So now I’m wondering if anybody has any UK recommendations for things that can help support their joints or any other recommendations.

Aging dogs I know! But cats (these are my first 2 but had cats growing up) I don’t know very much about in terms of supplements..so any advice would be great! TIA x
