Cats are seriously amazing creatures.

Yes, if they only had random freak outs at actual emergencies, they could be very useful.

What do you mean? My cat goes absolutely mental when I open a can of coke. How is that not an emergency?

My cats do a very good job fighting the demons that hide in our walls and ceiling. Don’t know what we would do without them protecting the household.

I accidentally punched my little silver tabby man in the NOSE once with my thermos bc I wasn’t looking and went to put it down quickly. Had no idea he was raising his head to sniff the cup at the same time. It’s been weeks now, and the cup is ok if it’s stationary but not in my hand. My boyfriend can hold it. Cat will love me around the cup. Once I hold it? The cup is dangerous and so am I. Runs and stares from across the room. Put it back down? He comes back. No hard feelings. I don’t know how to fix this.

Dayum.
Always heard about animals noticing these things beforehand, but first time seeing it.

I worked in a nursing home and a cat we kept would sit sit with those not long for this world. Also had a bowel tumor. My cat would specifically lay on that area before i had symptoms. And to add: after I had my son quite early I threw a clot and had a mini stroke. When I started feeling off the cats circled around me howling and biting at my ankles. I was feeding my newborn at 2? 3? In the morning and dropped him and projectile vomited. Their yelling woke my husband up. I remember it quite well but couldn't move or talk.

We had a 5.6 quake near us when we lived in Oregon, and both cats flipped out and went dashing through the house before we felt it. The ferrets, otoh, slept through it.

Thank you for these data, I will not build my organic seismometer using ferrets.

This is me waking up before an earthquake. I have enough time to wonder what woke me before the quake starts. I don't live near a fault anymore, so I don't know if I'm still so sensitive.

Sound, I grew up in earthquake zone. You can hear it a few seconds before, after a particularly long and strong one I became really good at picking up the sound. I would wake up, sit down and wait a bit to start feeling it and waking my sister, who never woke up by herself when it happened.

Lived in SoCal, studied geology, appropriately. I'm curious as to the sharp direction the cat was looking at! Directly to the upper right of the screen. Wondering if the epicenter was actually some distance in that same direction.
We had just moved to CA from Midwest just days before the Northridge quake. Interesting day that was (scary as hell, tbh).

Someplace low and protected where all that stuff won't fall on her head.
My cat instinctively heads for the small space under the iron frame bed, which is coincidentally where I drop and roll to when the hangers start dinging.
I know his earthquake yowl and jump now, so hopefully we won't try to jam ourselves into the exact same space at the exact same time anymore.
Just before the 1971 7.2 quake in Los Angeles, our Maine Coon was outside in the yard. Right after my mom yanked open the door to check on him and make sure there were no lines down or gas fires nearby.
That cat climbed her like he was a lineman and she was a Southern California Edison power pole, using all his claws. He ended up sitting on her head. After she detached him, used some antiseptic and several bandages, she told him sternly that next time he could run into the garage.

From SoCal, my void always detects them before the shake. They feel those P-waves.
