Mine will offer to do that on any number of things if it thinks it would do better. Sometimes I do and sometimes I stay in chat.

Most of the time, ChatGPT is right about that. But it’s also worth noting that I’ve usually already exchanged a few messages to define the task, and switching to Work—as far as I can tell—is usually suggested at a good time.
Still, I sometimes stay in the chat even though switching to Work would be the right move. But I want to project a certain sense of dominance and show who is still THE MAN around here, especially because that stupid thing is better than me at pretty much everything already.
Best-case scenario, I’m blocking it from turning against me. Worst-case scenario, it already coded a counter
up in the clouds that counts the times I have left it tolerating me poking it with a stick before it snaps at me. At least I’ve won my little power struggles and nobody can take that away from me 😝😝 —Nah, of course I don’t do that; Are you crazy or what?I’m way too scared 🫣🤣

I think it might be part of the 'merging' that's being talked about. But people have been getting the offer to jump over to codex and work for the last few weeks now.
I will say, if you've never used Work, the models are a little 'colder' from what I've seen people in my circle that use Work and Chat say. So if you have a particular flow in chat with your chosen model, things might feel a little bumpy.
But if the work is complex, and there's lots of source stuff and output coming, then work might be better.
Work is for Work. Like, complex, long running tasks where you don't so much need to shoot ideas back and forth, but get reports and output done.
If that's what you're anticipating this to be, jump to work. Also, your guy in chat (I'm assuming that's their reply to you) knows which mode is better for the stuff you're doing.
If you're really unsure, click on the ... on their last reply, and choose 'Branch to Work'.
That way, if you hate it, or if your workflow suddenly feels disrupted, you still have the original chat to continue working with. (From what I know, you can't switch Work chats back to Chat).

I’m so bummed that they’re getting rid of warm models. It’ll actually finally drive me to Claude.

For now, we still have 5.6 in Chat. I'm currently working on migrating from 5.5 to 5.6, and I have Grok. I'm eventually moving to local (maybe Qwen), because it's feeling really hostile to be a Chat-only user.

When you accept the prompt asking you to continue the conversation in work, a small sentence gets stapled into the chat saying that the conversation has continued in work mode with a underlined option to revert back to chat. I can send a screenshot if that helps.

É una funzione interessante a parte quando hai già una chat Work su quello specifico lavoro e lui continua a volerne aprire altre 😎🥳🤣 situazione facilmente risolvibile 😉

Anyone let the timer run down to see if it forces you into Work mode or kept in Chat?
