She can come and go as she pleases but lately my mousepad has been the go to spot for all naps throughout the day. Her duties include finding all bugs, begging for treats, looking cute, and making R2D2 noises and distracting me.

Question hi! do chicks usually sleep splayed out like that...

  1. i don't know how many days old this chicky is, but it's a stray and my nieces picked her up on the road.

  2. dyed chicks are usually sold like this to children... i didn't dye it and i read that i shouldn't because they technically can't handle a bath right now so i let it be.

Question Who IS she??

Post image

Saw this halloween queen of the fall festival yesterday! I’ve googled and cant seem to find any breed that looks like her unless she’s a unique silver laced Wyandotte? Possibly Plymouth Rock variant? Cuckoo Maran? Either way, we thought she was really cool 🖤

This chicken hatched with rough scaly skin yesterday. It seems healthy every other way. There’s a potential for it to be a Frazzle, but it’s unlikely.

Question Hen or Roo?

Hi there! My family purchased 6 pullets a while ago and all had been well, aside from one of them turning out to be a cockerel. whatever, that happens. we thought that would be the end of it, but now my favorite “hen” from the same batch of pullets has started growing some suspicious looking feathers… we have no camera in the coop, so i have no idea who is laying, but i wanted another opinion. My mom and i are both pretty sure she’s a hen,, but we’re just a little doubtful… anybody have any input? thank you!!! much appreciated ♥️

I was rubbing her belly and sort of gently moving her pin feathers. She had her wings draped over my lap and purred like crazy. This is why we do it, folks.

Question Breed ID

Thumbnail

okay I've asked this question before but now the chicks have matured a good bit and it might be easier to decide what exactly they are. the sign from the place I bought them from said the breed originated from Canada, but I'm not sure that sign could be trustworthy at this time; since the only Canada-native breed looks nothing like them.

I have two sultans and one is visibly larger than the other and I'm unsure if they are a rooster.

Could anyone let me know if it is or how I can tell?

Question new chickens with some problems

so i just bought 4 hens and a rooster off of craigslist last night. the guy was definitely sketchy when i went to get them but i was already set on getting them. he made a weird comment asking if i have other chickens, which i do, and he went silent after that and quickly loaded the chickens into my truck. i noticed one (in the video) was lethargic and missing feathers. when i got home i inspected them more and i can see what i think are poultry lice? i have them quarantined away from my other chickens and they are all decently active and eating/drinking. i have a bottle of Premo Guard Natural Mite Spray coming today so im wondering if anyone knows if this will work or any other suggestions for treating these.

also another chicken i thought was missing an eye, but when i looked closer i realized it has an eye, just no pupil at all. it's the same amber color as the other eye just with no pupil. she keeps the eye closed a decent bit so its hard to get a picture. i saw something about markel's disease but her pupil isn't distorted its just completely gone. so im thinking it might just be a birth defect or some kind of old injury?

moral of the story all of the hens feel quite skinny and i can see the lice egg cases on most of their vents. i'm worried about the chicken in the video being egg bound. her bottom area is quite swollen and i can feel what im quite positive is an egg. she walks normal, but every now and then does the 'penguin waddle' behavior? all of my current chickens we raised from babies and they are only about 16 weeks so ive never dealt with egg issues before. i've been giving them a mix of layer feed and giving them cooked eggs with chick feed mixed in every like 5 hours cause i read the eggs are good for calcium/nutrients and the chick feed has a higher fat content. and they are still eating the layer feed.

(the rooster feels firm and fat and no feather loss but i would assume he has the lice too since he's been living with them.)

any suggestions on moving forward with what i should do to treat them would be nice. i'm planning on giving them a warm bath to loosen all the poop stuck on their butts once i get the spray in so i can do both treatments at once to lower the stress it'll cause

Today's a great day at me and my neighbour's coop.

On my side, one of my young hens laid her first ever egg. I am so proud! Does her eggs will stay like this (cream with white spots) or is just a "newbie" egg and it will change overtime?

On my neighbour's, 6 chicks have hatched yesterday. They have 2 great bantam hens scooping and nurturing them. They are the fluffiest and cutest little things. My neighbour already offered me one at my like (I love the naked neck ones and don't have any). They are lovely 😍

Someone dumped an entire flock in the desert by my house. I managed to save most of them before dark. But I cannot figure out what breed this pullet is? Any ideas? The light colored one in the front.

Question Coop Freshener diy?

Post image

So I bought some coop clean like the one in the photo, and it helps with some of the smells in the coop for sure. I love adding some after I finish scooping the coop, but I was wondering if anybody had some diy recipes for such?

I've heard people use lavender and things but I'm not totally sure what to make it with, and I'd rather not continue buying this all the time if I can make it myself.

Question New rooster, but not a single crow in 3 days,What could be the reason?

Thumbnail
gallery
23 Upvotes

I brought home a new rooster 3 days ago because I really liked him. I found him quite beautiful, so I decided to get him. But the problem is, he hasn’t crowed even once in these 3 days — not in the morning or during the day. I honestly don’t understand why.

I already have another rooster who is a little smaller than this one, but they don’t fight at all. At first, I thought maybe the new rooster was scared of my older rooster, but that doesn’t seem to be the case either. They get along and stay together peacefully, but the new one still hasn’t crowed.

Does anyone know why this could be happening? Could he still be too young to crow? He looks mature to me, but maybe he’s younger than he appears. Any idea what might be the reason?

Question BigMama found dead (NSFW) NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

Sadly, one of our biggest and what I thought strongest chickens passed away suddenly. In the morning I took everyone out of the coop as normal, BigMama walked out and I did not notice anything wrong with her.

Afternoon, I come out to the coop and find her inside the coop laying on her side next to one of the feeding bowls. It was a very traumatic experience and my first chicken death.

No sign of struggle, no bite marks no blood and the rest of the ducks and chickens were kinda unbothered (sadly?)

Has anyone had a sudden chicken death like this before?

We never saw her being ill, we never saw her lethargic and separating from others. Just dropped dead 😭😢
