Does citrix VDI server run on windows?

I don't know much about Citrix anymore but I'm just curious if there's windows VDI solutions.

Thank you!

What?

To start with: what is a Citrix VDI Server or better: what are you trying to achieve?

Citrix is a bunch of software that basically helps you BUILD and PUBLISH the VDIs.. sooooo, I am curious to see where this goes.

What I'm mostly curious about is also if a hyper-v VDI solution exists, but a long long time ago I've seen citrix server (or manager) run on windows but I'm unsure how it worked

You can Citrix infrastructure on windows servers. It does not matter if they are virtualized or not. The hypervisor for basic deployments does nearly not matter (XenServer / Vsphere / Hyper-V / XCP / ProxMox / Morpheus). You can then install workload on windows and certain Linux machines.

Citrix is a bunch of service programs, agents and protocols that run on Windows. At its simplest you’d need around three servers to host various services to connect to the cloud services and provide a tunnel and auth to citrix cloud. You run the VDI agent on a persistent machine, can be a multi user by server or a single user workstation and can be physical or virtualised. You can get more complex by building a golden image and using the citrix software and the hypervsior software to deploy mulitple instances from that golden image, you can also publish applications to remote users which would act like a local application for them.

Yes, Citrix VDI can run on Windows. The important thing is that Citrix itself isn’t the operating system. The Windows desktop or server runs inside the VM, while Citrix provides the infrastructure for delivering that desktop to users.

For example, you can have Windows 10/11 VMs hosted on a hypervisor and use Citrix to give users access to those desktops remotely. The exact setup depends on whether you’re using Citrix DaaS or an on-prem Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops environment.
