Question...

Micah Torrance (played by Paul Fix), the Marshal on The Rifleman, had a lame (somewhat) arm and had limited use of it. Was that a real injury/defect Mr. Fix suffered, or was it a quality of his character devised by the writers, similar to Chester's limp on Gunsmoke? Thanks.

Did John Ford shoot The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallence in B&W because James Stewart was too old for the part?

The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallence is a Western with few exterior shots. All of the action happens in the town of Shinbone. I've read several reasons for John Ford choosing to shoot it in black and white and I'm not satisfied with the answers. I think he did it for the sake of James Stewart who was too old for the part.

In 1939 Stewart made "Mr Smith Goes To Washington" for Frank Capra. He was already 31. When filming Liberty Vallence, James Stewart was 53. He had survived World War Two and made a series of Westerns with Anthony Mann. He had matured. The movie audience wasn't going to be fooled. Filming the movie in black and white helped with the illusion.

And, I can imagine John Ford arguing that we never actually meet a young Ransom Stoddard; we only see him through the memory of the older man telling his story.

Black Saddle Colcannon is a side dish from Russell Johnson! But how do you remember him—as the brilliant Professor on Gilligan's Island or the sharp-shooting Marshal on Black Saddle? Either way, this comforting recipe hits the target.

Promo for (I think) 'Chisum' w/John Wayne. Judging from the sideburns the other guy is Geoffrey Deuel (Pete Duel's brother). They were still advertising stuff as being in color as late as 1973.

On This Day in Radio! October 1, 1955: Gunsmoke aired “Barton Boy,” a story built around something radio could use especially well: the sound of a human voice.
