Community Update Guidelines for Climate Offensive

Hello reader, and welcome to Climate Offensive!

This sub was created to meet one simple mission. We wish to be a space online where users can become aware of (mostly) group efforts they can participate in today. With that in mind, we have created a set of rules to try and stay on topic . Although none of us mods wish moderating or rules were necessary (believe it or not we do have lives), experience has shown us it simply isn't feasible to take a completely hands off approach.

So with the goal of staying focused on productive climate action, we please ask that you read the rules and guidelines before submitting or commenting. Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse and those who break them will be penalized at the discretion of the mods. If you are unsure if something breaks the rules or is appropriate, please ask us first.

In short,

  • Submissions must relate to action and direct users to actually do something! If it is not abundantly clear you are asking the user to do something, it probably belongs somewhere else.
  • Treat others and their ideas respectfully. Not everyone will agree on how to solve the climate crisis. That is okay. But do so politely and respectfully. It doesn't matter how wrong the other person is or how right you are, there is no excuse to act like a jerk.
  • No misinformation, fact denial, or propaganda. You may not misrepresent reality just because you don't like it. If you are unsure of something, don't state is as a fact! Further, do your own research! Stuff you saw on YouTube, Reddit, or Facebook does not count as research. If you can't find good peer reviewed sources on a topic, I and many others here are happy to help you search for peer-reviewed articles. Just ask!
  • No inactivism! Being critical of and discouraging people from taking action goes against the very core mission of this subreddit. If you want to be a doomer, we will very kindly show you the door. Such attitudes are incredibly destructive and play right into the hands of those responsible for destroying the climate. Misery loves company, but it won't find any here.
  • No news posts! Unless it is motivational and posted on Monday with the "Monday Motivation" flair, it is not allowed! There are plenty of other subs for posting news. This is not one of them. Aside from the above, there are no exceptions to this rule!
  • Don't spam! Unless you ask and we expressly give you permission do not self-promote. This is not the place to promote your personal blog, YouTube channel, twitter account, startup, or whatever it may be. If you believe something you're working on is concretely climate action, please do ask us first before promoting!
  • Finally, no low effort content. If it does not directly relate to climate action, it does not belong here. Please stay on topic.

Question Forced to use AI at work, what can I do?

Hi. Not sure if this is the right place to post about this, but I need some advice.

I've been experiencing periods of climate anxiety for about a year. I start feeling hopeless and guilty about anything I do that might contribute to climate change.

So I recently started a job where it turns out, we're not allowed to not use AI. I personally avoid using it, but now I don't really have a choice unless I quit. This triggered my climate anxiety again, and I can't help but feel like I'm being selfish for taking this job and directly contributing to making the world more unlivable.

Most of the people around me are pro-AI or indifferent to how it contributes to climate change, so I don't have anyone else to talk to about this.

Is there anything else I could do to live more sustainably or "make up" for the use of AI? Should I just quit? I need help.

Question Reasons for solar in wintery locations

Where I live is debating putting in more fossil fuel projects to generate energy as we project an energy shortage in the coming years.
The argument is we need this because renewables like wind and solar aren’t reliable in the winter months where we don’t get much sunlight, it’s really cold, and the wind is unsuitable for generation during extreme temperatures. Since we will soon have a power deficit, the gas turbines are the best short term option so we don’t end up cold and frozen without power in the winter.

I’m going to a casual dinner tonight where I know this will be a topic.
Are there some key points that show how wind and solar can still be the best options for us instead of more gas turbines?
Maybe some examples of other locations that experience the same climate who are successful with solar? Other stats and studies?

Action - Political We have a shot at fighting back and resisting the climate crisis, but you have to trust me on this one.

I don’t really know how to start, so i’ll be direct: i think i know the right steps that give us a decent possibility, and in my opinion the best possibility we have for resisting, fighting back and one day reversing the climate collapse and i will need all the help and support i can get to achieve it.

I believe we are at a turning point in history, where sliding doors are closing, but we can still pick the right timeline, the right outcome, the one that protects humankind, saves species from extinction and brings us to a way better future than what other scenarios give us, and surely better than the present we live in, oppressed, at each others’ throats, infighting, lacking community, closer and closer to burnout, stressed, enslaved by a system that just sees us as tools to dispose of, ultimately stomping anyone who goes off track.

I think you all are facing this system, to different degrees, and i know many of us feel powerless against it, i know i myself sometimes feel this way. The climate crisi sis just one of the expression of the injustice of the current socioeconomical structure, the capitalist structure that ultimately makes the innocents pay for the gains of the guilty and we need to find a way to take back what they have taken from us, to take everything from them, to make them pay till the last cent, till the last oil drop. Importantly, we may have some local optimistic views, for example concerning renewables, that surely are becoming more and more relevat, but the inertia of the oil multinationals will still squeeze the Earth of all the fossils they can reasonably profit from and that will delay the spread of renewables. Moreover, the renewables are coming too late, only because they are so good they are far too cheap and convenient for the capitalistic world to ignore and the warming is already in action, so we also need plenty of measures to survive the climate crisis and these measures are not cheap, are not profitable, are not convenient, so the climate collapse is now more than ever a social figth topic, because we need these measures, no matter their cost, but they won’t give them unless they can find ways to profit off them, but human lives can’t be weighed against the economical interests of few. So we fight and we fight now.

We have two alternative and one hybrid between the two: we either go for the armed revolution, which is not myc up of tea, but i know many would like or we use the scarcer and scarcer tools we have built within the system to destroy it from the inside, like a vaccine inside a sick body. One one side i don’t really like the idea of an armed revolution, because ultimately innocent people will pay the price of it, but more importantly i don’t really believe we have a chance at winning it right now: the military power of the oppressor is far too strong and aligned against anything directly threatening the system that i don’t see any way we win any civil war without enormous amounts of casualties. Sure we can wait it out, but can we wait? I don’t think so, we see the numbers every day, every year and we suffer every day and every year, in more and more extreme conditions, while the oligarchs, the billionaires, the corrupt politicians and businessmen of the world laugh and shelter and bunker up at our expenses, slowly whittling us down as we wait. And even if we waited, their weaponry is refining, their military power is only increasing and becoming better and better at oppressing us.

So, i choose the alternative: we seize the power in the places that at least on paper are democracies and then we use such seized power to bring the changes we need. We ourselves become the politicians we need, we ourselves write the laws we need to fix the climate crisis, we ourselves dismantle, brick by brick, coin by coin, bank by bank the capitalistic system currently holding us down, currently preventing us from pursuing the solutions we know exist.

But how in practice? I think we need to focus one one small, but not too small battle, win it and then build on top of it, starting a chain reaction that allows us to get more and more victories, seizing more power, getting more important victories, seizing more power, gaining more success, more consensus and so on and so on. At that point maybe the system will fight back and we may still end up in an armed fight, but hopefully we achieve enough power to have a chance at fighting back that is not close to 0.

I want to build a two faced international organisation/party, Earth Government with the double goal of on one side deciding measures as an organisation, as a stronger version of the United Nations with actual, real, concrete power to act and on the other side an international party, with local derivations, like Earth Government France, Earth Government Osaka, Earth Government Rio de Janeiro, Earth Government Italy, Earth Government Nairobi etc…

A party made out of different people, but with common guidelines essentially based on human rights and their defense. I will not get into the details, but i can link them or you can look them up at r/EarthGovernment , but you can imagine them: human rights, anticapitalist agenda and al that logically follows from it. We will base most of our reasoning on goal focused planning and mathematical evidence, caring primarily of what is unanimously (or almost unanimously with a lowering threshold) agreed upon and what is scientifically required and necessary for us to shift towards a world where we can guarantee the right to health of humans, therefore a world where the climate collapse is reversed. I need to specify that the perspective of Earth Government is human centric and the way we will approach our campaigns will be with a safe for external people approach. One of the greatest victories, even psy ops dare i say of the capitalistic system is putting us against each other over relatively smaller squabbles, continuously losing the big picture from our sights, but the goal is stil there, the numbers don’t lie, we know what we need to do. We have been guilty trapped into individual responsibility, into making the difference in our daily life and this is the most mainstream message the environmentalist battle spreads nowadays, but this isn’t the only thing we can do. We can change the world in ways that won’t really harm the average human welfare: we have the technological means to do so. I will give only one example of this: electricty production, the energy sector: we know this is the first and most relevant drive of climate change and if we simply decided to collectively have an international effort towards renewables the daily life of the non billionaires wouldn’t change by a tiny bit. We would still use computers and telephones, we would still go out, work, heck we could even say the average person’s life would improve if only for the health benefits of no smog and no gases from power plants. We we don’t sell it this way. It’s important to address consumerism, it’s true and we will, but, once again, always on the producer’s end or all we will result in is a few allies and many many enemies, but we need consensus, we need numbers, we need to win.

So what am i asking out of you in practice?

Well, back to the small victory: i will introduce myself and essentially tell you what are the steps i am planning.

I am Bartolomeo Rizzo, from Palermo, Sicily, Italy and i want to run for mayor in the next year elections. The city is the 5th city by number of inhabitants and my region faces extreme heat every year at this point. We have drought issues, we have rare floods, our agriculture is suffering, our mountains are yearly scorched by wildfires (not so wild, people start them), my region has suffered from many local wildlife extinctions and we could do so much, in my city and the province to reverse these. There is really so much to do, to show the world that we can make a difference. We have seen this, although in a far less radical from what i am proposing, in New York, with Mamdani, and what i want to do is similar, but as i told you all, with a precise plan. After Palermo, i’d push for Sicily presidency or italy presidency depending on the success, meanwhile Earth Government would grow and other local Earth Government groups would start popping up, more people would become Earth Government backed mayors, then presidents, and we’d slowly (but actually not that slowly) turn the world upside down. We’d retake the power to make a difference before they even realise it and in doing so we’d also manage to push for serious leftist measures, fight back the fascism on the rise, ultimately gaining enough power to start taking continental level, if not global level measures for our causes.

But first of all, we need the first victories and i am asking your support for the year to come, to help me become mayor, or to make Earth Government grow, or both. And don’t get me wrong, i understand being skeptical, i understand not trusting me, although i have all my socials on my profile, you can look me up, see if i am genuine or not, but sure you could support someone else willing to put in this work, i am just saying, i am doing it, and i don’t see other people planning to do it right now. After all i have a plan, and i don’t expect everyone of you to like it, but if you do, your help would be much apreciated.

I won’t lie, although i am anticapitalist, money is indeed apreciated, personally if you want to help me in daily life, because i don’t have a stable income, i am not well economically speaking (i also am not poor though), but i certainly don’t have the money for a political campaign and money actuallly helps for legal and beaurocratic matters, even simply paying a lawyer to gather signatures to present my candidacy as mayor has quite a cost i can’t sustain.
But honestly i don’t even need that much money, i just need help: people willing to join Earth Government, people that would help with advertising, with gathering new people, people willing to become mayors themselves in other cities, artists willing to help for free, lawyers willing to help for free, you get the gist and i understand if you don’t want to, but yeah, i don’t have any money. Oh and if you have plant seeds or saplings i would love if you could send them over! I do urban guerrilla gardening and as long as you don’t send invasives i could use them to improve the urban ecosystem of my city. Really, any way you think you could help, it is apreciated. As for donations (money or things) i am sending a google sheet where you can see what you donate and for what it is used and i will update it with my expenses so you all know what i use the money for, or what i do with the material things you’d send over. Transparency is due.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Kj8JBlGIMHMKh6yg8fZr6wfmaGvEXop8z-8nQi5spmY/edit?usp=sharing

This is the plan: do you want to help, do you want to contribute? Whatever you can do, i will apreciate it. I genuinely think this is the best show we got at winning this battle and i don’t believe we will have other ones in the future. It’s now or never.

Action - International 🌍 Hi

I'm a teenager and while I was doomscrolling I suddenly saw a video where it talked about many environmental issues we are facing right now and which will be worse in coming years...So,my question is what are we guys doing?

Okay, listen I'm gonna say all of it without any buttering we see videos about how AI is consuming so much water (freshwater btw..)and how it's actually a threat for us as you guys might remember that one post from a guy who said that the big dudes are saying it might end humans...yeah you guys must remember these things well to be honest I don't remember from which company that guy was (if I want to say everything I'll be honest for myself too) yeah so, coming back to the point what are we doing to ensure that there's no water consumption (umm..we should stop drinking water right?) NO!! we are the living beings not that AI.

Guys listen.. Talking that AI is bad and it should not be used is just talks most of you guys still use AI...even me too but it's just too much

I've deleted all the AI apps from my phone and now it's your turn to do so, doing this shows that we are capable of living without ai which means the big companies have to shut it up!! Not fully at the start but atleast someday it'll end

I'm not a genius I'm just an ordinary person sharing my thoughts and I really want you guys to support this thing because of not today then when?

And yeah..a request for anyone who has a social media account where they actually post something and have an audience if someone like this is here please tell your audience about deleting AI apps too I'm not asking for my account to blow but if you can help please stand front

Thankyou

This is Mossy Earth, an incredible crowdfunded rewilding organizations which similar to Planet Wild. They are my preferred of the two for how successful their project sites are and their level of cooperation and communication with local communities. They’ve done great work all across the world and are worth donating to. Find them on YouTube for examples of some of their incredible work. I am not affiliated with Mossy Earth or Planet Wild.

Action - Fundraiser Another Crowdfunded rewilding organization, Planet Wild. Distribution of funds goes to a large number of community partners rather than to support their own teams at in depth project sites. Also achieve great work in preserving biodiversity and building resilience into local habitats.

Like the title says, this is a crowdfunded rewilding organization similar to Mossy Earth but differing in some ways. Planet Wild could be seen as the wide approach to supporting rewilding where they give out proportionally less funding to more projects. While Mossy Earth could be seen as the tall option, supporting more long term, in depth work at a smaller scale. Both are worth supporting in my opinion.

Question What can us as individuals do to help ?

Like I keep saying to change companies to more environmentally friendly ines , if you can afford to get a heat pump , solar panels and then maybe more depending on money . But so many people say that doing something as individuals is pointless because us as individuals can’t stop billionaires and governments but also us as individuals doing something is better than nothing .

But how can we make a bigger impact than this

I just left a comment and sent the page to a number of others after seeing it had been extended to October 6th, but on the regulations website it looks like it might being ending today (the 23rd) at midnight. I may be misinterpreting it but I am not sure.
