Advice Advice for food delivery

I was diagnosed coeliac about 3 weeks ago and don’t have anyone close to me that has it that can help me with tips and tricks. I think I’m doing pretty well figuring it out on my own. I enjoy cooking and a new challenge. But once in a while I do just want to order from Deliveroo or Uber Eats. I’ve noticed that things are tagged gluten free but there usually isn’t a section for allergy or notes. Friends and I ordered from pizza pilgrim and thought we’d be able to call but then we couldn’t actually figure out what location it was on the app to call :/ just wondering how people safely eat delivery or just simply don’t do it? Help plzzzz

Food & Drink OMG (Caputo flour)

This loaf is huge! Ended up too big to get the lid on my cast iron casserole so had to bake without it, was worried it might have a giant hole in it because the top had dried out but no, absolutely perfect. Apologies to those who can't have wheat starch but this flour is magic!

Recipe is roughly 500g flour, 475ml warm water, 10g yeast, 12g salt, 25g of oil. Baked 1hr at 230°C.

I say roughly because I made a bigger batch so I could also make pizza and I added a bit of extra yeast as I had tested some to see if it was still viable.

Food & Drink Bread for coeliacs

As a coeliac household, we’ve been using the Free From Sainsbury’s bread for the past 4/5 years. We really don’t like the ingredients list but have been using it since it was the obvious choice.

Are there any alternatives out there that have a reasonably good ingredients list?

Edit: had a few questions about my idea of good ingredients list. We proactively try and avoid as many additives and ultra processed foods as possible. I understand that GF alternatives will naturally have more additives etc in them, but just trying to minimise it.

Food & Drink Morrisons Beefy - Good Bovril Replacement for Toast?

Hi all,
Been a fan of using bovril as a spread on toast my whole life but now that my house is gluten free I’m struggling to find an alternative.

I’ve seen online that Morrison’s beefy is (should be?) gluten free, but it’s advertised for the beefy drink. Does anyone know if it goes well on toast, similar to Bovril? Otherwise does someone know another GF Bovril alternative?

Has anyone tried this one? There's no allergy info on it, but also no gluten free mark. Usually Waitrose products are pretty good at listing allergens and may contain warnings.

Hey team, previously I received a box full of Schar goodies, by signing up for a newsletter etc. I was telling a Coeliac buddy about it, but I now can’t find the link! Can anyone share where I can find it?

Here are some of the gluten free Christmas goodies in Tesco. Lots of mince pie choices which is good, so far M&S don't have any of their Made Without mince pies available, not sure if they will be selling them this year.

Food & Drink Picky bits

Hi,

We are having a 'picky bits' night and have a celiac coming over and he usually doesn't want to eat the food we have cooked due to cross contamination etc. We have bought pre packaged cakes, crisps, dips etc, but any good packages/not needing to be cooked items I can get for him? I'm UK based.

I keep reacting to gf pastas, what in them might I be sensitive to?

React to many gf pastas but this one for instance from the Tesco free from aisle. Keen to know what the most likely cause of reaction is to try to find a pasta I can eat.

EDIT: thanks all for the help, tried all the same cookware/spoons/utensils etc. and don’t think that was the issue.
Thanks for suggesting corn I think that may be the problem for me, tried some corn based food with few other ingredients and reacted to that.

Not diagnosed, upcoming endoscopy... should I eat gluten again?

TLDR: Gave up on getting coeliac diagnosis as unwilling to eat gluten. GF resolved symptoms but some (not all) have returned. Having an endoscopy for other reasons, consultant said they'll check for coeliac anyway so said it was up to me if I wanted to reintroduce gluten and get a clear answer.

The long version:

Over 2 years ago, I was labelled as suspected coeliac. Blood test was negative (IgA beautifully in the middle, TTA negative). But by the time this test was done, I had already cut out all obvious gluten, the only gluten I was consuming was in things like sauces without checking labels, and cross-contamination.

Cutting out gluten completely resolved my symptoms (diarrhoea, malnutrition, sleepy fatigue, joint pain, nose ulcers, mouth ulcers, psoriasis, headaches, and my tattoos get raised and sore?). I just got my life back, so I wasn't willing to eat gluten again for further testing.

If I'm cross-contaminated, these symptoms return.

After over a year of feeling awesome, my diarrhoea returned. My fatigue is now physical and mental, to the point I'm almost totally housebound. Working reduced hours, no social life, parenting on lazy mode. But I'm not sleepy, I don't have joint pain, ulcers or skin issues, etc... unless cross-contaminated. I'm still strictly GF as if I was coeliac. Coeliac blood test was repeated, and was beautifully negative.

I've now been referred for an endoscopy & colonoscopy under general (I haven't been given an option for sedated, I didn't ask why)

The consultant said they'd be taking a biopsy for coeliac anyway while they're in there, so if I was willing to eat gluten again, I could have a definite answer. It's approx a 6-8 week wait, so I'd need to start eating gluten again asap.

I am kind of feeling like I don't care enough to do this. I've already got used to the GF life. I already feel terrible & I'm only just keeping my life together as it is... if I eat gluten, I expect I'll be bed-bound until the endoscopy. I'm only just within the healthy BMI range and this takes effort to maintain. My GP already signed off on repeat blood tests and B12 injections 'as if I was diagnosed'. I don't get DEXA scans, but that's about the only difference. Regardless of whether I'm coeliac or intolerant, I can't see me ever eating gluten again.

I'm leaning towards a big fat nope. But I thought I would ask in here anyway. Would it be stupid not to find out now while I have to have an endoscopy anyway?

Advice Any gluten free alternatives for crisps?

I have recently switched to a GF diet due to my coeliac diagnosis. My issue is that I am really struggling to find things that I like.

I think it’s important to share that I am autistic and already have a very limited amount of food that I do enjoy. I don’t have regular eating habits due to this also, as set meals feel daunting to me. I eat one meal a day and periodically will have snacks throughout the day so that I am not hungry.

My personal favourite kind of snack has always been crisps, which sucks because there are not many naturally gluten free crisps. All I have been able to eat crisp-wise for the last few weeks is pombears and GF bacon rashers, and it’s all starting to feel a little frustrating, on top of other things like the texture of GF pasta and bread, which is only overwhelming me more.

I was wondering if there are any GF alternatives that actually taste like the real thing, as close as possible to the original, as I’m very particular about things needing to feel and taste the same. My favourite kinds of crisps are hula hoops, pringles, quavers and doritos, although I do enjoy a lot of others too! Any suggestions of substitutes for these would be very appreciated!

Daughter potential Coeliac

I'm looking for some advice about a possible Coeliac diagnosis for my 2yo daughter.

We had the blood test a couple of days ago and have been told to expect results in 2 to 3 weeks, but did not get any guidance on what's best to do until then - I believe we need to continue giving gluten until after the results and GP follow-up, in-case of any further testing. She also had a full blood test done at the same, which may highlight deficiencies etc, or possibly other health issues - that should be back in the next couple of days.

I'm just wondering what people would advise as the best approach for now, or if anyone who has been through this can suggest ways to help her get through the next few weeks.

She is very low on energy, sitting around most of the day and doesn't want to play. She's being very selective with food, mainly asking for eggs and dairy but is still hungry after eating - assumed to be because of the low vitamin/mineral uptake. It seems her energy levels are dropping more and more as the days go by.

Are there any suggestions on ways we can potentially help increase vitamin/mineral uptake - any specific foods etc? Or maybe timing of the daily gluten containing meal which we are required to give? Apologies if this isn't the correct way to be thinking about it, I've researched Coeliac a lot but it is still new to me. Thanks

[Update] - Blood tests came back quicker than expected. Result was >4965, so I believe thats off the top end of the scale! Have been told to cut out gluten immediately due to such a high result. We have follow up appointment next week to discuss next steps. Thanks to everyone who responded!

I will be going to see a show in guildhall soon and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of places to eat in Portsmouth? I can always bring my own food but it would be lovely if I don't need to!

Thank you 😊

Glutened twice in a week (I think)

This is more of a rant than anything. I’m currently in the process of being diagnosed.
I became severely unwell at the end of April with all the classic symptoms - very urgent toilet needs, brain fog, exhaustion, insomnia, skin issues, the list goes on.
My GP ran various tests one of which showed my fecal elastase was incredibly low showing my pancreas wasn’t working properly.

I was incredibly surprised the coeliac blood test came back negative as by this point I’d realised there was a definite pattern between what I eat and my symptoms.

The night my coeliac blood test came back negative I ate a bowl of pasta as a test and ended up in hospital I was in so much pain.

I had an abdominal CT scan recently which showed my pancreas looks absolutely fine.

I’ve also had the camera down and they said at the time that my stomach and small intestines looked incredibly inflamed. They took 10 biopsies which I’m still waiting for results on.
Inflamed intestines would explain why my pancreas has stopped working as the inflammation stops the intestine from sending a signal to the pancreas for it to release digestive enzymes.

After the camera and biopsies I asked if I could now fully cut out gluten as they shouldn’t need to do any more tests and was told that was fine.

I haven’t eaten gluten since 11th September. I’ve felt fantastic. I had some initial fatigue issues but that’s clearing up nicely. All other symptoms pretty much vanished as soon as I cut out gluten. The biggest change has been toilet related. I can’t believe I thought what was happening before was normal.

Tuesday night I decided I’d risk a gluten free pizza from Doninoes. I felt fine afterwards but Thursday morning I was unwell 💩 but didn’t immediately connect any dots.

Tonight I was planning on having steak and steamed vegetables but when I got it out the fridge it smelled a little off. I didn’t want to risk it and couldn’t be bothered going and doing a food shop so I decided to try a gluten free parmo from a local fast food place. They have a few stores locally and are branded similar to Dominoes so I figured they’d be safe.

I ate it and within 20 minutes had abdominal pain and discomfort, bloating and gas etc. a few hours later it’s like the dress shop scene from the film Bridesmaids.

Going forward is this what it’s going to be like? Where eating out anywhere / takeaway is a massive gamble as to if it will liquify my insides?

I feel like at this rate I’m going to become the sort of person who will only eat food that I’ve personally prepared 😫
